Double Take: 1980 and 1982 Lancia Beta Zagatos

With the sun finally creeping out from behind the clouds and the last throws of winter grumpily making way for spring flowers, it's nice to think about an affordable Italian roadster. Sure, the Ferrari 550 Barchetta is a great option if you own some oil fields in the Near East, but for most of us the budget will be a bit more modest. One of the more interesting options that would really set you apart would be to look at the Lancia Beta Zagato; if for no other reason than not many remain. Quick depreciation, spotty reliability and rust-prone panels mean these have become a rare sight in the U.S. However, two have popped up on Ebay that are near twins, though being born two years apart. Let's look at the elder first:

Holy mackerel, it's got the original tires on it! What an impressive condition example; it certainly looks nearly good enough to have rolled off the showroom floor and displays none of the normal wear and tear that is associated with these budget convertibles. With under 40,000 miles on the clock and being a California car, the concerns about what's underneath that polished facade are put at ease. What about the second example?

I have a very nice Lancia Zagato up for sale. This fun little Italian sports car reads only 66000 orig miles and runs and drives great with its peppy 4 cyl engine and 5 speed transmission,it's a joy to drive. The Targa and convertible top have been redone a few years back and look and work great. The paint on the car looks to have been redone at some point but not recent, it shines nice but not perfect. Bumpers and glass are near mint cond. the interior of the car is in very nice cond. no dash cracks,clean carpet,nice seats some seem separation on driver seat only .The engine is clean and runs smooth,the wheels are in nice cond tires should be replaced from lack of use. So it's a little less than perfect; I have no problem with that, although life in New Hampshire for a Lancia would give me a bit of concern. In this case, I'd spend a little extra to get the all-original California example. Hagerty lists top value of these cars around $12,000 and I'd expect the 1980 is heading that way; the 1982, while nice, probably is closer to half that value or slightly more, but I'd inspect it closely underneath before buying.

In the realm of memorable Lancias, the Flaminia doesn't often come to mind for most enthusiasts. Indeed, even when Top Gear did their memorable Lancia episode, the Flaminia wasn't even mentioned. That's a shame, because while the Fulvia, Stratos, 037 and later models really created the rally legend, the Flaminia was an absolutely stunning coupe that was easily as beautiful as some of its contemporary Alfa Romeos and even Ferraris. Available in Pininfarina, Zagato or Touring designs, this example of the latter represents a rare opportunity to get into a classic, early Lancia:

Selling a lovely 1963 Lancia Flaminia Touring L coupe 3C for a client.

The car is rust and alloy corrosion free, and has been a West Coast car since it was brought into the US in the early 60's. Well cared for and never seriously damaged.

What small amount of rust was removed from the inner sills professionally and fresh metal welded in correctly. The pictures tell the tale here.

The car was media stripped to bare aluminum about 5 years ago and the car was repainted, a dark metallic blue roof over a lighter metallic blue bottom. The paint work was done to a good club standard and not concours, not to say the car is not very show able but again not concours on paint. The bumpers, grille, tail light housings and other bits were very nicely re-chromed. The car has a full set of new tires from Coker Tire (all 5)

The car had a very extensive and correct valve job performed and the carbs gone through along with the entire front suspension was re bushed and re built (not a small task on a Flaminia) all this work was carried out by a very skilled technician with previous Lancia experience, who also replaced (with correct new factory parts) the exhaust system from the factory cast iron headers back.

The rubber in the front and rear windshield was replace with new correct replacements from Italy along with the seals in the doors and around the roof where the windows meet the roof.

Most recently the interior was completely gone through, with new leather seats side and door panels, and a new headliner and Wilton Wool carpets. The only part of the interior that is original is the top of the dash board. The workmanship is incredible.

The car drives very well and does not smoke, I saw the engine when the heads were off and the cylinders looked excellent. All water hoses were replaced when that work was performed as well. There is none of the drive line vibration that plagues these cars when there are issues. It is absolutely smooth and the gear box is spectacular, brakes work properly and do not pull but there is some low speed brake squeal when your barely on the brake pedal. Steering is excellent and what you would expect from a solid well maintained car. The mileage shown is 33,928 KM but I am more inclined to believe that it is 133,928 KM but can not confirm that. Probably good to mention that this car has the long nose transaxle and hence the shorter drive shaft.

If your looking for a very well sorted, great driving older exotic this could be for you. The car was built to be a driver and made a cross country trip from the West Coast to the East Coast for the East Coast Lancia Reunion after the mechanical work was performed. The car has also received trophies at several events. (not included with the car)

Obviously, having fairly recently undergone a major restoration, the condition of the car is pretty impeccable and for that alone it stands apart from most of the early Lancia crowd. Certainly you'll be in rarefied company if you purchase this machine, but I really think wherever you go it will be greatly appreciated. The color combination is lovely, the engine is said to run well, and the major headaches are gone from worrying about what's underneath the shine. Pricing for such a turn key car will undoubtedly be high, but this price even might be a bit optimistic; for $65,000, it's roughly $10,000 higher than what Hagerty places top value at - and the Flaminia market has been pretty flat over the past few years. For the right person, if you like the color combination especially, this might still not be a bad deal, but I'd like to see all the records and the car in person before forking over a 20% premium over the market value.

1976 Lancia Fulvia 1.3S

There are few cars prettier, in my opinion, than the Lancia Fulvia Coupe. So delicate are the details of this car that you barely notice how small this two-door really is until you get right up on it. But beauty also lies beyond the surface in this case, with an innovative narrow angle V-4 engine, 5-speed manual gearbox and front-wheel drive that gave this car the prowess it needed to dominate on the rally circuit. Fulvias are few and far between in the US, but this one just arrived via Italy and is looking for a good home.

These Lancia Fulvias are one of the best kept secrets of the classic Italian car game. While they may not have the rear drive handling characteristics of the Alfa Romeo 105/115 GT and GTV coupes, it has similarly handsome lines and an engineering pedigree that predates the Fiat/Lancia merger. The asking price is just about right for what appears to be a very nicely kept example, as the high end for Fulvias of similar vintage tend to hover around the mid to high $20,000 range.

Abarth Racer Heaven: 1962 and 1963 1000GTs

On our sister site, German Cars For Sale Blog, we do a weekly feature called "Motorsports Monday" in which we cover some sort of track, road race or rally prepared German vehicle. But while the Germans have a strong history in motorsports, the Italians are right there with them. Indeed, Fiat, Lancia and Alfa Romeo was racing some of the earliest German sports cars well back before World War II, and it's the reputation of manufacturers Fiat, Lancia, Ferrari and more recently Lamborghini in racing that have helped to build their loyal customer base. But even more recent to pop back up in the market was the name Abarth; though relatively unknown in the United States, Abarth has been producing some of the hottest small Italian cars for decades; modifying everything from Fiats and Lancias right through Porsches. If you didn't know or follow racing, Sebring 12 hours was this past weekend; and while there were no Abarths in the field they were a staple of late 1950s, early 1960s sports car racing. Another name that was equally famous, if not more so in the United States, was that of Briggs Cunningham - he pioneered racing not only here but in Europe as well, taking his custom made Cunninghams to Le Mans amongst other races. The connection shows in the white with blue stripe Cunningham colors, a testament to the American connection - those are the racing colors of the United States. As a professionally restored original race car, it's absolutely beautiful and carries the requisite Abarth trunk open shape; a characteristic that was uniquely solved by Bertone in 1963:

Either of these cars would be very welcome at both shows and on the Vintage race circuit, where their unique bubble profiles stand out a bit from the traditional 1960s cars. Value on these cars, due to their top condition and histories, will likely far exceed the normal top of the market on these around $60,000 - but that's still well short of the current 356 factory racer market, for what it's worth, where correct original Porsche race cars can easily pop into the millions. As such, these Abarths offer similar experiences and a unique bit of history, along with a boatload of character for a relative bargain. Plus, they're just super cool.

Sometimes cars appear in a manufacturer's lineup to make one ask the question "just what were they thinking?" The Cadillac CTS-V wagon, Buick GN-X and Subaru SVX come to mind. If you dial back a bit further in time, the Lancia Scorpion, known as the Montecarlo in other markets, stands out. Designed on the Beta chassis, this car would form the basis of the 037, a very successful rally car of the 1980s. This mid-engined Lancia lasted but two model years in the US market, with only 1,801 sold. Rarely seen today, this Scorpion for sale in Pennsylvania has been in storage since 2001 and does not run. For a resourceful Lancia enthusiast, this could turn out to be a rewarding project.

1976 Lancia Scorpion Pininfarina. One owner with Pennsylvania A title. Not run since 2001. Nice project.

This Lancia Scorpion has been in dry indoor storage since the passing of the original owner in 2001. Bought new at Reading Foreign Car in Reading Pennsylvania. 111,176 miles. Not on the road since 2001. This is a non-running / non-operative project car. Red with sand leather interior. Repainted original color by original owner in the late 1990s. Interior is all there with the driver’s seat requiring work. Someone pulled the seat back adjustor handle thinking it to be the hand brake handle and snapped the plastic. Cloth top is nice but needs new rear top latches. Mechanical condition unknown. Engine turns by hand but may require work. I have no historical or maintenance documentation. If you could source a rebuilt Fiat 2.0 liter twin cam engine, this Scorpion would be a solid base for someone looking to tackle a series of projects that, in the end, would net a unique and attractive sports car. Like many Lancias, the Scorpion succumbed to rust easily, but this one looks to be a solid survivor, no doubt in part to being stored for a long while. The interior also could use a bit of attention, with seats in dire need of new upholstery. If the final bid can be held around the $4,000 to $4,500 mark, it would give the new owner enough room in the budget for the necessary work.

1972 Lancia Fulvia

While the Lancia Fulvia Coupe was out racking up rally victories, it's four-door counterpart went rather unnoticed throughout its production run. Perhaps it was the Fulvia Berlina's homely yet tailored looks, but beneath lied advanced technology for the age. The engine was a narrow angle V4, mounted at a 45° angle. One camshaft operated all intake valves and another operated the exhaust valves. The use of a narrow angle allowed Lancia to package the engine with one cylinder head. Add to this engine four-wheel disc brakes, front-wheel drive and front independent suspension and you had a formula for fun. This Fulvia Berlina for sale in Maryland is a little rough but is perfect for someone looking for a collectible to tinker with and improve this winter.

Need a last minute gift for that incorrigible Italian car enthusiast in the family? Look no further!

Here is one of the last TRUE Lancia automobiles. That illustrious company was bought by Fiat in 1969, and built their last Fulvia Berlina in 1972. Though a few Fulvia Coupes were built until 1976, the rest of the line was converted to Fiat-designed vehicles (of much lower quality).

The Fulvia probably killed Lancia because it cost too much to produce. Though it was only a small-displacement car, it was engineered with the same high standards as the more expensive Lancias. Many details of these last Lancias show amazing attention to detail, and extraordinary engineering creativity. Many parts are cast, not stamped steel.

I imported this car from the Venice area of Italy in November 2004. It has been a wonderful car to own and drive and even enjoy as garage-art. But it does very few miles and needs attention in a number of areas, and it is time for someone with fewer vehicles (or more resources!) to bring it back to its former glory.

Pros

- Original engine/trans/rear work well and this is a wonderful driving car. Bend it through a corner and it will track like an arrow through the apex.
- The body is fundamentally solid. There have been a few body repairs done, and it does show some rust damage around the windshield, but this is not one of those Italian cars that swam through salt water to get here!
- All electrical systems/lights work
- Great color combo
- All original down to the hubcaps with their beautiful cast centers
- Shortly after the car landed, we dropped the front sub-frame and did an extensive update, including clutch, rear main seal, steering box bushings, axle boots and all rubber bushings that mount the sub-frame to the body. We painted the body mount boxes with anti-rust paint to assure future integrity.

Cons

- The car needs minor body work and paint. Ideally, you'd have a body shop do all the minor imperfections, including removing the windshield to repair the rust there, then paint the same solid dark blue color it is now.
- It needs tires. The Fulvia still has the European tires I bought it with and I hate to replace them if the next owner wants a wider tire or different wheel.
- There are a number of small projects to be done (it is a 1972!) including aligning the steering wheel, new weatherstripping, and gaskets in the gauges.
- There is a slight exhaust leak. It sounds lovely going through the gears, but I now hear a slight leak closer to the manifold.

Btw, parts for this car are not hard to find. Not necessarily cheap, but they are available. I understand that this is an odd time to list a car (Christmas week), so if you cover the deposit, you are welcome to pick up the car anytime in January. Please call for more detail as required.

A show quality Fulvia Berlina will currently run you somewhere in the neighborhood of $10,000 to $15,000. Given the amount of work needed on this example, I would peg this car somewhere in the $6,500 to $8,500 range. This is a very complete example that could be run on a daily basis with a little TLC or prove a solid base for a concours restoration project.

For those looking for Delta Integrale ownership at a lower cost, the 8V models are a good place to start, as the later model 16V and Evo 1 and 2 models are gaining ground in the collector car market. While there are a few of these rally heroes that have made their way to Canada, most people who have imported them aren't ready to quite part with them just yet. While a few of these Integrales were produced in right-hand drive, most were left-hand drive, even if they were sold in right-hand drive markets. So for those seeking out a bargain for a right-hand drive car, it would be worth your while to seek one out in the British Isles, as long as it is devoid of any rust issues.

Lancia is one of those manufacturers that is virtually unknown in the US market. Consumers on these shores would be surprised to find out that a manufacturer from afar is mostly comprised of a rebadged Chrysler product range. Currently, the Chrysler Sebring Convertible is doing duty in Europe under the badge of this very car, the Flavia. The original Flavia was Lancia's mid-sized offering from the early 1960s to mid 1970s and featured an aluminum, horizontally opposed four cylinder, four-wheel disc brakes and unequal length front wishbone suspension. Available in sedan, coupe and cabriolet form, Pininfarina was responsible for the styling on the car featured here for sale in New Jersey, an unrestored 1964 Flavia Coupe.

Original unrestored 1964 Lancia Flavia Pininfarina Coupe just woken up after 16-year slumber. Early 1500cc motor with (2) 2-bbl solex carbs. Always garaged, overall solid condition. I purchased the car in 1990 with 33,475 miles on the odometer – and it had not been driven for several years before I bought it. I drove it about 6,000 miles before it went into the garage (coincidentally when now 16-year-old kid was born). I have some records, but not enough to know actual mileage.
Damage to cylinder wall of one cylinder and no compression in that cylinder. Car starts easily and can be driven (once warmed up) but motor requires cylinder repair. I just drove home 10 miles from mechanic, but I wouldn’t recommend driving much farther.

Rebuilt brake booster just installed and brake line replaced, brakes work but pedal is stiff. Old booster in trunk (with lots of other stuff). Some rust behind front wheels (jack points) but underside, floors and sub-frame are solid. Leather interior, front seats worn with loose stitching. Rear seat, door panels and headliner are excellent. Dash cover and kneepad rebuilt in 1994 (foam had turned to dust). Original Nardi steering wheel in excellent condition with operable hi-beam flash in center.
Electrical mostly works, horn and low beams not currently operating, but I think everything else is ok, including engine compartment light when hood is open and engine is running. Blaupunkt radio kind of works on really strong stations. Passenger door was repainted at some point a long time ago – paint is good color match but has not aged as well as other paint. Some cracking in paint finish, plus some chips and nicks here and there. Small dent in passenger door and trunklid (see photos). Two sets of original keys, original jack and tool kit, all original books including factory parts manual, and lots of spares including taillights, trim parts, exhaust, etc. I've always loved the design of this car but it's time to move on. It's rare you see Lancias for sale, and even more rare a Flavia Coupe of this vintage. The styling is rather curious, as it is a blend of the Flavia sedan in the front with oddly placed tail lights in the rear. Still, the styling works in a conservative kind of way. If somehow an Alfa Romeo is just a bit too mainstream for your tastes, a Lancia coupe from this era would be a good alternate choice. Given their obscurity, the Flavia is a rather affordable classic. A concurs quality Flavia may bring $15,000 to $20,000 at the high end, so I'd suspect a well preserved original like this may bring $10,000 to $14,000.

Also present is the original hand book, service book & lots of old bills / receipts. The car has never had any welding repairs & is still solid. The Evo I and II are the Integrales that bring the most cash these days, as they are the last of the breed and feature styling and performance enhancements not seen on earlier Integrales. The asking price here is about in line with what Evos are bringing abroad, however, factor in the shipping and customs fees if this was legal to import and it becomes a pricier proposition. Perhaps a few intrepid enthusiasts may go to the trouble of bringing these rally beasts over once the 25 year threshold is reached, but once here, you know they won't be cheap.

Lancia Fulvias are not just another car with a pretty face. These cars were champs of the rally circuit in the 1970s, bringing advanced features like a narrow angle V4 engine and front-wheel drive to the scene. Their well-proportioned looks disguise just how small these graceful coupes actually are. These are fairly uncommon classics in the US, but this one for sale in California is a very clean example with a rebuilt motor and retrimmed interior.

Hi There, for sale I'm offering a great legendary Lancia Fulvia 1300 "as rare as a white fly" highly collectable. Sure you can find an Alfa Romeo Giulietta or a GTV but a Fulvia? ...... 🙂

This car has been in my family for the past twenty years and was shipped to the USA in 2009 from Rome. Garaged in my country house close to Yosemite. The last photo shown was taken in Perugia, Italy on front of the Villa of Conte Armanni my fathers home town. It's only driven occasionally and has never been registered in America. The car has 57,000 original miles the engine was rebuilt (approx. 10K) in Italy and the interior has also been re-done. The transmission is a five-speed manual. Most of the paint is original but repainted in a few areas. Very little rust on the bottom of the doors although the trunk and floors are in excellent condition.

While they are more technically advanced than their Italian rival, the Alfa Romeo GTV, the Fulvia lags a bit behind when it comes to value. The low to mid $20,000 range is the order of the day for these cars at the moment, where this car is priced. Values have started to creep up in recent years; whether it is due to their rallying heritage or collectors began appreciating them for their looks is no matter. The Fulvia is one sweet Italian classic that you can enjoy on a regular basis.
