By now we’ve either seen or read the reviews of “The Wolf of Wall Street,” a take by famed director Martin Scorsese on the fast times of the world of high finance in the 1980s. If you were watching closely, you might have spotted a classic sports car from the 1980s make an appearance in the opening scenes. "Trying to Fix" means "if parts are immediately available" (these are all minor, relatively inexpensive repairs/parts fortunately). Basically, 99% of the car is mint....the above 1% are simple fixes, general wear-and-tear stuff for New York City year 'round, garaged cars.

If this were any normal Series 3 Spider, we’d be looking at a $10,000 to $15,000 car here, given the condition. Is star power worth more than double in this case, then? That’s debatable, given this isn’t the first time this car has appeared in an online auction. It certainly would be interesting to see where this would go with no reserve. Given this car appeared in a movie regarding the investment world, maybe it's worth taking a risk over the normal value for a slice of movie history?

I bought this car 5 years ago because it was identical to one I had 25 years ago, the best family sedan I've ever owned. The original owner installed many sensible performance mods: Pandora computer box, sport springs & tuned suspension that make it a joy to drive. Extras include Momo steering wheel, K&N filter, Zender wheels, tinted windows, carbon fiber shifter knob, custom exhaust with a mellow bellow to kill for, awesome stereo. There are 133k miles on the chassis, 75K on motor - the original owner installed a 3.5 L motor and ran it like that for ~60k miles, then re-installed the original motor. Nearly new Yokohama S 205/50-15 tires.

The car is kept in a heated garage and driven vigorously every couple of weeks, as every Alfa should be. I wouldn't hesitate to drive it across the country. I now regretfully need to pare down the Alfa stable to make room for a new acquisition. If you're looking for a great Verde to drive or just admire, you'll be hard put to find a better one for the money.

These Alfa Romeo Milanos are cars certainly worth saving. Sure, like all Alfas they take a bit of fettling at times to get right, as our friends over at BlythBros. have chronicled. However, get them sorted, and what a rewarding drive they are. They offer a level of involvement and tactile pleasure that seems impossible to replicate these days.

Under the hood is a smooth 2.0L I4 mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. The sporty Pininfarina-designed body is expertly finished and virtually free of flaws, set off by 14 Ferrari 308-style wheels that are wrapped with Michelin tires. The original owner's manual is included with this Alfa, as well as a binder containing most service records and additional service work completed. For entertainment, there is AM/FM stereo cassette deck. This Spider Veloce drives as good as it looks and you're sure to grab attention with it wherever you go! Vehicle is a Southern California car with no rust. The car has been recently serviced and it is very healthy mechanically. It runs and drives great!

The Series 3 wasn't the most desirable of the Spider lot, but such an original, low mileage example like this will bring strong money. This car has a reserve, and if I had to estimate, it's probably somewhere in the $12,000 to $15,000 territory. There are cheaper Spiders out there that could feasibly be used on a regular basis, but for those seeking the best, this particular car would be a good place to start.

Mid-Engined Maseratis: 1977 Maserati Bora & Merak SS

Maserati is one of those companies that came back from the brink. Several times. Through multiple owners the marque somehow bumbled its way throughout the 20th century, eventually being absorbed by Fiat, where it is currently enjoying a renaissance. At the end of the 1970s, however, the situation was bleak. Maserati's owner, Citroën, went into receivership in 1975. The new controlling group, PSA Peugeot Citroën declared this applied to Maserati as well. After ownership was transferred to an Italian government and eventually, Alejandro de Tomaso, they were forced to lumber along with the same products until de Tomaso geared up production of the Quattroporte III, Kyalami (based on the De Tomaso Longchamp) and the Biturbo.

The last holdovers from the Citroën era are the two vehicles we see here, the Bora and Merak. These were limited production sports cars that, while pretty, couldn't secure the future of the company. The first car we'll take a look at is the Bora. This car's V8 engine could trace its lineage back to the 450S race car, with four cams, 16 valves and hemispherical combustion chambers. Just over 500 Boras were built, with an almost equal number distributed between the 4.7 and 4.9 liter models. This 4.9 for sale in Miami is a low mileage barn find and was sold new in Florida.

Bora values languished for a while, but in the last couple of years have shot up. These cars represented everything great about Maserati, from eye-catching good looks to a sonorous, race bred engine. It seems that collectors have finally taken notice. The seller is asking all the money for this one. Given the interesting history and very low mileage, I'm not surprised.

The next Maserati we'll take a look at is this 1977 Merak SS, which is sometimes described as the junior version of the Bora. The Merak is two cylinders down on the Bora, sharing its engine with the Citroën SM. The smaller engined allowed for limited rear seating, best for either children or small luggage. This car would compete with the Lamborghini Urraco and Ferrari 308GT4 as a sort of entry-level super car. This Merak SS is also for sale in Florida, a little further north of the Bora, situated in Orlando.

This a 1977 Maserati Merak SS, a very unique car. It has a great color combination, orange exterior with black leather interiors. The car has A/C, radio cassette, power windows (are not working), and tilt wheel. It also has a 5 speed transmission. This car has a V6 engine with 3 carburetors. The mileage is only 14,152 (exempt). It also has Campagnolo wheels and a tornado mirrors. This car runs good. It is one of those cars that everyone enjoys looking at it because of it's unique features and very rare.

Personally, I'm a fan of the pre-1976 Meraks, as they had the stylish Citroën SM dashboard. This feature would disappear after Citroën went belly-up. In 1976, they would transition to a dashboard with more square aesthetics. Given the smaller engine, it's no surprise the Merak is more affordable than the Bora. The best Meraks out there may bring in the $50,000 to $60,000 range. This example is quite presentable, if a little bit rough around the edges and has the problem with the non-funtioning windows. Expect an example like this to fetch somewhere in the $35,000 to $40,000 territory.

Alfa Romeo, as a brand, has had a bit of a split personality through the years. You have your flamboyant sports cars like the 8C Competizione, Montreal and SZ that have appeared along the iconic Spider throughout the years. Then there are the more sedate coupes and sedans, like the 164, 105/115 Bertone coupes and this car, the Alfetta Sport Sedan. Innocuous looking in ivory with brown velour, it has a throaty twin cam engine and rear-mounted gearbox for maximum driving pleasure. This one for sale in New York has to be one of the best, examples that is currently for sale in the country, if not the world.

The seller of this Alfa is know for some high end metal, such as the 1988 Porsche 911 Carrera Club Sport we featured recently over at our sister site, German Cars for Sale Blog. It’s unlikely you’ll find a cleaner version of this model any time soon, but does that make it worth almost $25,000? Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. If it were me, I would target this car’s forebear, a Giulietta sedan, as you can get a decent driver for similar money. Realistically, the best Sport Sedan of this era should bring somewhere in the $10,000 to $15,000 range.

1974 Alfa GTV 2000 - GT Veloce - Restored & Beautiful. Here it is - one of Alfa Romeo's most beautiful cars - now appreciating rapidly and becoming collectors pieces.

The car has 55,000 miles and was professionally restored ~5 years ago. Rare Giallo Ocra (italian for "yellow-orange") over black leather interior. The paint is absolutely gorgeous and the interior is in amazing condition as well. Zero rust (see pics). Runs great with lots of power and recently had the SPICA professionally tuned. Original California Blue Plate. Awesome Campagnolo Chromodora wheels showing a nice patina. Beautiful original wooden steering wheel stamped "Alfa-Romeo."

This is an amazing drivers car, and these GTV's are known for their extraordinary handling and canyon carving. This is an original California car and all the hard stuff has already been done but here are some small things the car could use:

It has an oil leak (all 1970's Italian cars do)

The second gear grinds if you shift it at a high RPM (again a very, very common Alfa problem) - I drive with it like this and simply double-clutch going into second gear and it goes very smoothly. If this bothers you, for an extra $200 (!), I have a fresh transmission you can have with the car to fix this.

The tach bounces (see video) - I have an extra complete 1974 GTV gauge cluster that goes with the car to take care of this!

Turn signals work intermittently - I have 2GB of 1974 Alfa GTV wiring diagrams and service manuals you can have

This car was stolen in the 1980's and issued a salvage title- a time when their value was low enough that it was easier for insurance companies to simply consider them a loss than to source the expensive Italian parts. The photos speak for themselves and there are no visible signs of damage; additionally, I have gone over the entire car with a digital paint thickness gauge.

On offer at no reserve, I would suspect this GTV will fetch somewhere between $25,000 and $30,000, given the current market. There are a few issues with this car, but none that would seriously deter an enthusiast from staying away. These are very rewarding cars to own and drive and are a great entry point into the world of (somewhat) affordable Italian classics.

Sometimes cars appear in a manufacturer's lineup to make one ask the question "just what were they thinking?" The Cadillac CTS-V wagon, Buick GN-X and Subaru SVX come to mind. If you dial back a bit further in time, the Lancia Scorpion, known as the Montecarlo in other markets, stands out. Designed on the Beta chassis, this car would form the basis of the 037, a very successful rally car of the 1980s. This mid-engined Lancia lasted but two model years in the US market, with only 1,801 sold. Rarely seen today, this Scorpion for sale in Pennsylvania has been in storage since 2001 and does not run. For a resourceful Lancia enthusiast, this could turn out to be a rewarding project.

1976 Lancia Scorpion Pininfarina. One owner with Pennsylvania A title. Not run since 2001. Nice project.

This Lancia Scorpion has been in dry indoor storage since the passing of the original owner in 2001. Bought new at Reading Foreign Car in Reading Pennsylvania. 111,176 miles. Not on the road since 2001. This is a non-running / non-operative project car. Red with sand leather interior. Repainted original color by original owner in the late 1990s. Interior is all there with the driver’s seat requiring work. Someone pulled the seat back adjustor handle thinking it to be the hand brake handle and snapped the plastic. Cloth top is nice but needs new rear top latches. Mechanical condition unknown. Engine turns by hand but may require work. I have no historical or maintenance documentation. Last Pennsylvania state inspection expired in February 2001. Will make a wonderfully fun driver. Don’t miss this opportunity to own a piece of automotive history. Sold as-is where-is. Low Reserve.

If you could source a rebuilt Fiat 2.0 liter twin cam engine, this Scorpion would be a solid base for someone looking to tackle a series of projects that, in the end, would net a unique and attractive sports car. Like many Lancias, the Scorpion succumbed to rust easily, but this one looks to be a solid survivor, no doubt in part to being stored for a long while. The interior also could use a bit of attention, with seats in dire need of new upholstery. If the final bid can be held around the $4,000 to $4,500 mark, it would give the new owner enough room in the budget for the necessary work.

Perhaps it was the Fulvia Berlina's homely yet tailored looks, but beneath lied advanced technology for the age. The engine was a narrow angle V4, mounted at a 45° angle. One camshaft operated all intake valves and another operated the exhaust valves. The use of a narrow angle allowed Lancia to package the engine with one cylinder head. Add to this engine four-wheel disc brakes, front-wheel drive and front independent suspension and you had a formula for fun. This Fulvia Berlina for sale in Maryland is a little rough but is perfect for someone looking for a collectible to tinker with and improve this winter.

Need a last minute gift for that incorrigible Italian car enthusiast in the family? Look no further!

Here is one of the last TRUE Lancia automobiles. That illustrious company was bought by Fiat in 1969, and built their last Fulvia Berlina in 1972. Though a few Fulvia Coupes were built until 1976, the rest of the line was converted to Fiat-designed vehicles (of much lower quality).

The Fulvia probably killed Lancia because it cost too much to produce. Though it was only a small-displacement car, it was engineered with the same high standards as the more expensive Lancias. Many details of these last Lancias show amazing attention to detail, and extraordinary engineering creativity. Many parts are cast, not stamped steel.

I imported this car from the Venice area of Italy in November 2004. It has been a wonderful car to own and drive and even enjoy as garage-art. But it does very few miles and needs attention in a number of areas, and it is time for someone with fewer vehicles (or more resources!) to bring it back to its former glory.

Pros

- Original engine/trans/rear work well and this is a wonderful driving car. Bend it through a corner and it will track like an arrow through the apex.
- The body is fundamentally solid. There have been a few body repairs done, and it does show some rust damage around the windshield, but this is not one of those Italian cars that swam through salt water to get here!
- All electrical systems/lights work
- Great color combo
- All original down to the hubcaps with their beautiful cast centers
- Shortly after the car landed, we dropped the front sub-frame and did an extensive update, including clutch, rear main seal, steering box bushings, axle boots and all rubber bushings that mount the sub-frame to the body. We painted the body mount boxes with anti-rust paint to assure future integrity.

Cons

- The car needs minor body work and paint. Ideally, you'd have a body shop do all the minor imperfections, including removing the windshield to repair the rust there, then paint the same solid dark blue color it is now.
- It needs tires. The Fulvia still has the European tires I bought it with and I hate to replace them if the next owner wants a wider tire or different wheel.
- There are a number of small projects to be done (it is a 1972!) including aligning the steering wheel, new weatherstripping, and gaskets in the gauges.
- There is a slight exhaust leak. It sounds lovely going through the gears, but I now hear a slight leak closer to the manifold.

Btw, parts for this car are not hard to find. Not necessarily cheap, but they are available. I understand that this is an odd time to list a car (Christmas week), so if you cover the deposit, you are welcome to pick up the car anytime in January. Please call for more detail as required.

A show quality Fulvia Berlina will currently run you somewhere in the neighborhood of $10,000 to $15,000. Given the amount of work needed on this example, I would peg this car somewhere in the $6,500 to $8,500 range. This is a very complete example that could be run on a daily basis with a little TLC or prove a solid base for a concours restoration project.

Normally you can find a later model 328 for sale around the $60,000 to $80,000 range, but this 308 has edged itself into that territory. Whether low mileage and an uncommon color is enough to bring the big money remains to be seen. Of the 308s, early fiberglass bodied examples and the later fuel-injected models with four valve heads like this one are the most desirable. At most, however, a 308 like this should bring somewhere in high $40k to low $50k range.

For those looking for Delta Integrale ownership at a lower cost, the 8V models are a good place to start, as the later model 16V and Evo 1 and 2 models are gaining ground in the collector car market. While there are a few of these rally heroes that have made their way to Canada, most people who have imported them aren't ready to quite part with them just yet. While a few of these Integrales were produced in right-hand drive, most were left-hand drive, even if they were sold in right-hand drive markets. So for those seeking out a bargain for a right-hand drive car, it would be worth your while to seek one out in the British Isles, as long as it is devoid of any rust issues.
