Fiat 500 Jolly Conversion

This was too good not to feature. It's not even really a car for sale on the new/used market, so much as it is a service offered by Jolly Car. Simply put, they convert the modern Fiat 500, introduced in 2007, into their updated interpretation of the original Fiat 500 Jolly. We would post more information from their website instead of reposting their advertisement from Car and Classic, but the website isn't all that informative.

Original Fiat 500 Jolly's, with the canvas canopy, doorless bodies, and wicker seats, are the domain of boat owners and those with oceanside villas. Even today, they average $50k for what amounts to a golf cart with excellent road manners. In this sense, especially in light of the inflated price of the modern version, nothing has changed!

The spiaggine

The spiaggine is an open styled car, intended primarily for use in summer months, often at tourist resorts. It is distinguished from other types of cars by the fact it has no doors, no roof, has a removable awning in place of the roof.. The interiors are made of water-resistant materials.

The birth of “spiaggina” type vehicles was immediately after the war by the initiative of some Italian coachbuilders who transformed mass production utility cars in order to make them suitable to the needs of wealthy clients, to suit their needs during the holiday period at seaside resorts.

The changes were made by request of the buyer varied and generally included the removal of the roof and replacing it with a tarp awning made of cotton, the installation of cloth or wicker seats and elimination of side and rear seats for better access.

The name "spiaggine" comes from one of the first cars of this type, the Savio spiaggine of 1958, built from a base Fiat 500 and designed by Mario Boano. This car, although it was built in only two copies, became famous around the world for being photographed with its owners, Gianni Agnelli and Aristotle Onassis. What probably contributed to the emergence of the term "spiaggine", the reference to the folding chair used in Italy at beach-side resort, since at the time of their presentation journalists likened this type of car to "beach furniture".

Since the second half of the 1950’s, several models of spiaggine were built in small series from the main Italian coachbuilders until the early nineties, including the body Moretti Turin that after the success of the 127 and 126 midimaxi created the only spiaggine wheel drive : the Moretti Panda Rock, produced up to December 1989.

With the final closure of all builders who worked and altered production Fiat chassis, the term "spiaggine" fell by the wayside because of the safety rules and regulations in Europe. But these cars are always admired by many fans and make record quotes from records in all auctions worldwide.

old Fiat 500 Jolly Ghia

The Ghia 500 Jolly is a spiaggine built by Ghia bodywork, 1957-1974.

Made on the mechanics of the Fiat 500 and later on the basis Autobianchi Giardiniera, was among the first projects of Sergio Sartorelli, just come to the technical direction of the Ghia, after the departure of Giovanni Savonuzzi.

The car was very expensive and was a cult object, scope and bought by many VIP’s like Aristotle Onassis, Yul Brynner, Enrico Berlinguer and Silvio Berlusconi, to be put on their yachts or for 'use as a "golf cart" as well as a way to get around their estates. Among the most famous owners also the artist and Ligurian painter Mario Berrino.

They were sold in the United States between 1958 and 1966 and in Italy and Europe until 1974.

The vehicles included protections on the sides and the windshield, as cover had simply an awning of protection for the sun (instead of a more classical hood) resting on a body of chrome pipes, the doors were totally absent and replaced by simple chains. The colors were available: pink, coral, white, pale yellow and sky blue. The mechanics had been the original Fiat with the classic air-cooled twin.

Gang, we can't tell you how to spend your money. We feature many cars that we could see spending our own money on. We don't foresee a future in which we are of the state of mind to buy a nearly $100k golf cart. If we do, though, you can bet that it will be in this lovely okra yellow color!

1975 G.A.M.C. Baldi Frog

Let's face it: the Fiat 500 is a bit large and unwieldy. Tough to sneak down city streets. Cumbersome. A hassle to park. While the basic components for a proper city car are present, Fiat missed the mark on convenient city driving.

Enter G.A.M.C. Baldi, coachbuilder of the Frog. Lopping 20 inches off of the standard Fiat 500 chassis and providing their own body, they have managed to realize what Fiat failed to accomplish. The resulting city car puts even a modern Smart ForTwo to shame in outside dimensions. Engine options ranged from 125cc to 595cc, this example being outfitted with the goldilocks 499cc Fiat unit. A 4-speed manual shifter sprouts from the floor - no antediluvian column shifting is required in the Frog.

The sellers of this Frog claim that the car has been restored. The engine bay, interior, and paint all seem to be in great condition. We wouldn't seat the mechanical condition too much, as the fundamental components and rebuild parts are all available just as they would be for a Fiat 500.

So, for those who already have a 500, but require something more modest for trips into town, we recommend the Frog. Where it lacks in style, it delivers in convenience. The 499cc Fiat power plant and 4-speed manual should make for some entertaining transportation in the lighter Frog body too. Hop to it.

2006 Maserati Quattroporte

Every now and then, when we see one of these Tipo M139 Maserati Quattroportes roaming the streets, we lament the recent abandonment of the classic large sedan proportions. The Quattroporte V nails these proportions in a way that few of its contemporaries, outside of Jaguar XJ, ever could. And, it's a shape that begs to travel across the country at unacceptable speeds.

Fortunately, it's got the mechanical underpinnings to back that notion up. We've heard few positive reports on the DuoSelect transmission, but we have to wonder if the detractors were driving the car as intended. This isn't a car built for shuffling along narrow European streets; rather, it aspires to full-throttle ascents of Montana mountain passages. Backed by an F136 Ferrari power plant, the task should be both effortless and enjoyable.

A rare two-owner pampered example of a Quattroporte. This spectacular Maserati was purchased new and serviced at Maserati SF. All maintenances have been completed on time, and no expense was ever spared. The clutch was recently replaced as well as a major service. The Grigio Nuvolari shows to be original and the car shows no signs of previous damage. The Cuoio Sella Premium Leather Seating shows no abnormal wear, shrinkage, sun damage or fading. All books, manuals, and keys are present and it was a non-smoker's pampered garage queen. There are a lot of poseur Maseratis on the market with deferred maintenance and in need of a clutch. This is NOT one of those cars. This car was maintained like a proper automobile with a six-figure price tag from day one. Our site posts content to many other sites all over the world. To ensure all pictures are accessible, we provide a link back to each listing on our site. This listing's URL: https://www.carsauto.com/2006-maserati-quattroporte-c-1611.htm

The swaths of Cuoio Sella Poltrona Frau leather throughout the interior play well with the subtle but striking Grigio Nuvolari metallic exterior paint. The car was clearly garaged, as evidenced by the condition of the leather surfaces - no sun damage or shrinking to be found. Minor road rash can be found on the front bumper and along the sills, but these spots can be touched up. More important than cosmetics, the mechanical condition of this example is claimed to be immaculate. The seller claims that no maintenance was deferred, noting even a recent clutch replacement among the service history.

We have picked up that the reputation of these cars is a bit negative. Cheap to buy, they fall into the hands of those seeking attention from the Trident. As owners of a used Maserati ourselves, we believe that you're mistaken to think that the typical person on the street will notice you in a Maserati of this vintage. And that's a good thing, because you won't need any outside validation in an executive sedan like this one. Our bet is that Maserati didn't profit too much on this generation of Maserati, all the more reason to buy one.

1991 Lamborghini Diablo

If you missed your opportunity to buy a Countach, there still may be hope for finding a Diablo. That's especially true if you prefer the earlier iterations of the two models. Whereas the first iteration of the Countach, the P400, demands top money in the Countach world, it's the later Diablos, now under Audi engineering direction, that Diablo collectors seem to snatch up. Even late Countach's are priced at multiples of an early Diablo.

As far as we're concerned, these early cars are alright. You get the 485hp V12, a descendent of the original Bizzarrini design. AWD had not been offered on the car yet, so a simple mid engine, RWD layout exists. Chrysler involvement seems to be limited to funding, and - unfortunately - styling. The Diablo is an attractive car in every possible sense, but when you see what Gandini had intended for the car, it's just a bit disappointing. Chrysler really watered down the styling of the P132 that Gandini originally proposed. The plus side of this is that the design has aged better, although we prefer the more daring of the two designs.

The Italians break the 200mph mark with this amazing V12 Monster back in 1991.
It was no surprise then, that the Diablo was the fastest production car in the world for the 1991 model year.
Finished in pearl white on cocoa brown interior this car is a gorgeous piece of automotive history.
Iconic body lines show nicely in this well preserved example. No major dents or scratches
to note paint has minor stress cracking on the rear spoiler. Headlights pop up evenly and
function perfectly. All gaps between panels are perfect and car has never been wrecked.
Original 17 inch wheels wrapped in pirelli tires all around factory suspension drives very smooth.
Brembo brakes all around to stop you safely for high speed driving.

Interior is in excellent condition Seats are in great condition finished in a cocoa brown color
these seats look fantastic. The leather wrapped dash in in excellent condition. Door shocks
in good condition has an aftermarket alpine radio functions well has 6 CD Changer alpine as well
located conveniently behind the passenger seat. Gated manual is one of the
sexiest parts of this car in its convenient height for quick downshifts or upshifts. AC functions
well and blows cold.

1991 Lamborghini Diablo white engine

The white exterior fits perfectly the car's current locale of Miami - not to mention the cocoa brown interior. Options were limited on Diablos, and this car lacks power steering based on the year (power steering wasn't added until 1993). Early cars also lacked ABS, although we aren't entirely sure whether this car is too early to feature ABS or not. In 1991, the optional rear spoiler probably had its appeal, and it's nice to have the option of running it, but we would remove it, were we to buy this car. Also, leather dashes can be tough to keep pristine, though this one doesn't look terrible. They're nice for five years or so, and then become a nuisance.

So, for manual Gallardo money, you can pick up an early Diablo. Not bad. The Gallardo will drive like a modern car, of course, and that is admittedly more in the spirit of Lamborghini's founder. But, we'll make an exception for a Diablo. Mid-engined V12 manual transmission cars are hard to come by, and few make them anymore. This could be a good opportunity to find yourself in the seat of one.

2015 Fiat Ducato Clone

Here is something that we don't featured everyday: a Ram ProMaster van badge-engineered into a Fiat Ducato shop van. Following in the footsteps of Daimler and their Sprinter vans, FCA saw fit to bring the Fiat commercial van lineup to North America to meet the increased demand for the tall, European-style vans. In the North American market these vans were marketed under the Ram brand, but little differentiates the Ram vans from their Fiat cousins found in Europe.

What really solidifies the European credibility of this particular Ram ProMaster is the diesel engine. Branded EcoDiesel in North America, the Iveco unit produces a respectable 155hp and 300lb-ft of torque. Unfortunately, this engine was only available in North America for a few short years, as diesels have fallen out of favor with North America, for a number of reasons.

This is 2015 Ram Promaster 2500 EcoDiesel and as many of you already know, it is really Fiat Ducato, Peugeot Boxter and Citroen Jumper in disguise. This model ( diesel ) more so as the engine and transmission in this configuration are available on Euro market, just as it is.

Also it is very hard to find stateside at this point, not many Diesel's around.
I have purchased this van with intention to make it a "shop" van, but plans have changed and van has to go. Van was purchased from insurance company, it has had minimal damage in the rear right corner, and to the rear axle ( dead axle this is FWD van ). We have replaced everything and no expense spared. All brand new stuff, except for rear axle, but that is just a solid piece of metal, so we got a used assembly from recycler. Wheels are new as well. Literally brand new assemblies with new rims and new tpms's. I have also installed brand new trailer hitch and factory wiring ( 4 and 7 plug ) and if needed, brake controller installation would be breeze, all is there.

As you can see in the pictures, van has been re-badged back to Fiat, I also have original grill with Abarth emblem. There is a set of Abarth stickers made for this van, and installed.
So, this van was one owner prior to me, sold new in Rhode Island at the end of 2015, to electrical contractor. Original cost was just under $49000. It was sold and maintained by Chrysler dealer. Current oil service is still good, for another 2-3000 miles, but I have full set of filters ( oil, fuel, air, cabin ) and oil to go with it. We purchased the van couple months ago, repaired the damage, had it inspected ( salvage inspection ), 4 wheel alignment was done, stickers removed, van was cleaned in and out. There is a partition behind the seats, I had it removed, but I still have it.

Van is ready to go, and ready to be registered, all paperwork is in order and buyer can count on 20 day temporary tag for the trip, if needed.

I have personally driven this van 4-5000 miles, just to make sure all is good.

We will provide, free, clear and transferable SALVAGE Rhode Island title WITH NEW HAMPSHIRE SALVAGE INSPECTION SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETED.

What you see in the pictures is what you get, nothing more and nothing less.
Instead of writing long disclosures, common sense is expected, you win you own, and expected to pay. Swift transaction is essential, certified funds of course within 2-3 days.

AS IS sale. We will assist in any possible way.

Port of NJ / NY is about $400 delivery. We can help with shipping as well.

Aside from the Fiat Badges, Fiat front grille, and the Abarth decals, not much sets this van apart from the Ram on which it's based. For Italian car owners with the need for a shop van, that should be plenty. We must warn potential buyers that this example has a salvage title, although the seller reports that the minor damage was all repaired with proper attention to detail. Caveat Emptor applies, but we don't think that it's a dealbreaker - if the price reflects the damage, that is.

Italian car owners aren't always the most rational bunch. We ourselves are inexplicably drawn to this van, if only for the Abarth decals and Fiat badges. Is that so wrong? After all, it was surely engineered by Fiat in their Italian tech center. The badges are just a correction to reveal the truth behind the vans origins!

1993 Alfa Romeo RZ

The Alfa Romeo RZ has always been an acquired taste - presently, and when it was introduced in 1992. See, despite production of the 278 examples of this roadster ending in 1993, it wasn't until three years later, in 1996, that the lot was finally sold off. Today? Well, for a car that seems to be mechanically equivalent to a nice Milano Verde with upgraded camshafts, they demand around 10 times the cash! For perspective, keep in mind that the RZ sold for over two times the list price of a 164 when new.

That isn't to say that the RZ isn't worth some consideration. Unique thermoplastic body panels, though not dead simple to tool up, allowed for more palatable pricing in the lower production run in both the SZ and RZ. And, compared to a Milano Verde, the engine features a further 27hp by means of improved camshafts, a bump in compression ratio, and altered engine management. To that, add the Alfa 75/Milano IMSA style suspension, with helper coilovers at the front to supplement the torsion bars, as well as coilovers in the rear. Rubber bushings were replaced with stiffer materials, and the DeDion nose bushing swapped out for a spherical bearing.

RZs weren't available in many configurations; colors were limited red, black, yellow, and silver. Red seems to be the most common color for the coupes, while yellow fits the roadster a bit better. Inside, the Momo steering wheel is similar to a Montecarlo, but with an added pad around the horn button. We can attest that these look excellent when added to a GTV-6, and expect them to look just as good in an RZ.

While we would have a tough time talking ourselves into an SZ coupe over, say, a GTV-6, we can see the appeal in the RZ. It's the only transaxle roadster that Alfa produced, as well as the only factory Busso V6 roadster from the marque. Sure, it was a bit underpowered for 1993, but the overall experience is likely more than sufficient for a weekend roadster with some seriously edgy bodywork. We'll forgive a lot for that Busso exhaust note!

1993 Alfa Romeo RZ Trophy Race Car

Here's a race series that we had never heard of: The Zagato Trophy. This 8-race series honored the 75th anniversary of Zagato in 1993. 13 cars were constructed for the series, with Alfa Romeo even offering a 25% discount on the price of a new SZ/RZ to be entered into competition.

The series cars were not drastically altered from their original state. Changes were limited to a kit, which included revised shocks and springs, a racing exhaust, upgraded brakes, revised engine management chip, and a balanced engine. As for rolling stock, the cars rode on three-piece OZ Racing wheels shod in Pirelli slicks. And finally, each car featured a roll cage, 4-point racing harnesses, a fire suppression system, and the requisite tow hooks for track recovery.

Based on the scant information on these cars, we believe that the RZ pictured was prepared fro Duilio Truffo to enter into the race at Monaco. Preparation time was so precious that the racing exhaust was never installed, leaving the catalytic convertor installed for the race. In spite of the this disadvantage, the yellow car, whose graphics were designed by Ercole Spada, managed a third place finish.

We're delighted to have come across the Zagato Trophy. The racing liveries, such as Martin Dawes getup on this RZ, seem at home on the decidedly homely Zagato specials Likewise, the SZ and RZ look at home on the racetrack. $93k is steep for what amounts to a rebodied Milano Verde, but the it's right in line with the market for these. Even if the Zagato is a forgotten series in international racing, it adds a neat bit of history without compromising the car much at all. If anything, it's a nice excuse to take an RZ to the track without reservation!

2018 Ferrari GTC4Lusso T

Introduced in 2017, the Ferrari GTC4Lusso T eschews the typical Grand Tourer V12 of the standard GTC4Lusso in favor of a twin turbo V8, while also abandoning the AWD system of the standard car. Though the rear wheel steering system is spared, the GTC4Lusso manages to save a reported 121 pounds, all of it from the front end, over its V12 sibling.

The V8, in this case, comes from the Tipo 154 line of Ferrari V8s - in this case, the Tipo 154 BD. This variant represents the top of the 82mm stroke offerings, besting both the Portofino and California T with a stout 602hp. It doesn't hold onto boost as long as the 83mm variants - the 488GTB and 488 Pista - but does match the former in peak torque.

The only thing that we'd change on this particular example is the inclusion of the fender shields. The optioned sports exhaust is a welcome addition to an engine that is up against the sound attenuation of turbochargers, and the ventilated seats should prove useful on the Los Angeles to Las Vegas trips that more than a few of these shooting brakes are bound to experience. Plenty of room for blotters, mescaline, ether, and your partner the attorney, though we aren't endorsing that sort of trip.

As for the V8 vs. V12 question, we side with the V12. The weight savings for the V8 don't outweigh the diminished aural experience on a grand tourer such as this. And, as far as AWD systems go, we're rather enamored with the system on the GTC4Lusso. It's an unorthodox, yet elegant solution, and could prove to be very entertaining with some high performance snow tires. At the same time, we aren't having much trouble picturing a pair of surfboards on a GTC4Lusso T; we concede that for the ultimate surf wagon, you'll want the rear-drive V8.

2017 Ferrari GTC4Lusso V12

Today's Ferrari GTC4Lusso looks awfully similar to yesterday's Ferrari FF. And yet, we think that Centro Stile Ferrari have improved substantially on the FF, which was a joint effort between Centro Stile Ferrari and Pininfarina. The dual taillamp rear of the GTC4Lusso breaks up the mass better than the single rounds on the FF, in our opinion. We're not sure why the modest styling changes required such a drastic name change though. FF was certainly a lot easier to type!

On the mechanical side, the GTC4Lusso sees modest improvements over the FF. Ferrari has fitted a four-wheel steering system in addition to improving the AWD system. Though this model is an AWD V12 variant, the GTC4Lusso was offered in "T" trim, where the AWD was omitted and the V12 swapped out for a 3.9L turbocharged V8. Look out for one in tomorrow's posting. Speaking of the V12 engine in this example, it too sees an upgrade over the FF, producing 680hp in Tipo 140 ED trim in the GTC4Lusso vs. the 650hp of the Tipo 140 EB found in the FF.

We like the color combo on this example, and it apes the FF from yesterday down to the yellow brake calipers. We feel obligated to recommend a Ferrari V12 over a turbocharged V8, but we're torn on this one. More to follow in tomorrow's GTC4Lusso T posting. For now, we'll just say that more appropriate applications of Ferrari's TTV8 exist.

This particular car is a Certified Pre-Owned example, which we wouldn't think of as a Ferrari program, but the program exists nonetheless. It would take a lot of warranty work to add up to the $100k premium of this car over yesterday's FF though. With modest drivetrain and chassis improvements, the largest difference between the two models is the exterior styling and freshness of the GTC4Lusso. We don't know if it's worth the cash over a similar FF to us, but for some, the upgrades will be worth it.

2012 Ferrari FF

Prior to 2011, if you asked most enthusiasts if Ferrari should build a shooting brake grand tourer, they would have welcomed the idea, ludicrous, though it was. And then, out of nowhere, Ferrari presented the FF shooting brake as the successor to the 612 Scaglietti. And threw in a brand new AWD system to boot. Our suspicion? All of the Enzo owners were tired of wheeling their Range Rovers to the slopes and needed a ski rig from Maranello.

The powertrain solution to the new largest Ferrari is quite interesting. First, the old F133 V12 from the 612 Scaglietti is replaced by the F 140 EB V12, a variant of the Enzo's 65 degree V12. Displacement and peak torque are up over the Enzo, which the FF matches on power. As for the AWD system, Ferrari left the front engine, rear transaxle layout intact. To that, they added a small power take-off to the front of the engine, providing two speeds of power to the front axles. The design consolidated the development to a single mechanism and allowed Ferrari to adapt much of their existing hardware, all while saving weight over a more typical AWD system.

We dig this color combo, and appreciate the lack of Daytona seats. Look, the Daytona seats add a welcomed texture to the otherwise unadorned interior, but for the long drives we'd expect to take in an FF, the standard seats would be our choice. And speaking of long drives, we're inclined to believe that transporting 4 individuals, driver included, in this machine is a real possibility. 651hp. 4 real seats. A useable rear hatch. Yes, please.

We wish that Ferrari had offered a traditional manual with its gated shifter, but as far as automated manuals go, the 7-speed dual clutch unit offered is acceptable. The customer base for these certainly prefers the automating shifting, now that the jerky shifts of early F1 boxes are a thing of the past. We also wish that the styling team had done more to reduce the visual heft of the FF, as they did on the successor, the Ferrari GTC4Lusso. All in all though, the FF is still our top pick for an all-weather grand tourer.
