Theme Week: A Tribute to Sergio Pininfarina: 1984 Pininfarina Spider

Along with the Alfa Romeo Duetto Spider, the Fiat 124 Spider is one of the most recognizable Italian roadsters. No surprise, then, that the 124 Spider was designed by Sergio Pininfarina and the Alfa was penned by his father, Batista. From 1983 to the end of the car's production in 1985, the 124 Spider was marketed by the design house responsible for it's existence, being called the Pininfarina Spider Azzura. It's not too hard to find 124 Spiders and the later Spider Azzuras in good shape, but this example for sale in Illinois has to be one of the best examples I've laid eyes on, having been recently restored.

What is a Level One restoration? Firstly, our Spider restorations typically fall into two categories. Level 1, and Level 2. Roadster Salon carefully selects candidates for restoration that are already in good overall condition, and meet our critical standards. Cars that require complete top to bottom rehabilitation are set aside for parts use only. Level 1 cars must be re-painted in their original color, due to the cost of a proper color change.

Roadster Salon cars are disassembled before paint. Interiors are fully refurbished, including new leather apolstery, carpets, door panels and console. A new convertible top is professionally installed. Mechanical repairs are limited to safety and performance concerns, not full scale rebuilds. Wear items like tires, brakes, and shocks are always replaced. Other key items inspected and repaired/replaced are fuel system, cooling system, suspension, transmission, timing belt, and engine gaskets and seals. Engine compartments are tidy, but not fully detailed.

Level two restorations are much more costly. Generally, we take the level two approach only on 1985.5 Pininfarina spiders, which have very limited production versus the 1980-1985 cars. Paint work is more ambitious, with more extensive preparation and finish times. Paint cost is typically double the budgeted amount in a Level One restoration. Undetectable exterior and Interior color changes are possible. Interiors are replaced completely, and feature optional leather material upgrades and custom installation. Mechanical work is not limited only to items in need of obvious repair. Engines and transmissions are removed from the car and completely rebuilt. Undercarriage is fully detailed and painted to a show standard. Level two restorations typically can take longer tham a year to complete, and start at $30,000.

Pricing

Spiders built after 1982 were fully assembled in Italy by Pininfarina. No Fiat badges are on the vehicle, and the cars were produced in very limited numbers. Only the 1981-82 Fiat Spider Turbo is comparable in terms of value. Roadster Salon's Base price for a Level One restored 83-85 Pininfarina Spider is $18995, including leather and power windows and 14" alloys. The base price for a fuel injected 1980-1982 Fiat Spider is $15995, which reflects the difference in our purchase cost and standard equipment.

Cosmetic Impressions

Close inspection shows this car's finsh work is exceeds our high standards. All key cosmetic items have been either replaced or refurbished, per level 1 standard. Car has been refinished in its original color combination to remain true to the intent of the manufacurer, and keep the finished cost below $20K. One of the most breath taking cars we have ever completed. Tuxedo black over tan interior is a stunning contrast.

Mechanical Impressions

Car is a joy to drive, although test runs have been kept to a minimum due to the extremely low original mileage on the car. It can easily be shown and transported from event to event---or actually driven daily. This is one of the most outstanding combination of miles and condition you are likely to ever find. Five speed transmission is precise and shifts smoothly. All key aspects of the car perform as intended. All mechanical concerns have been addressed prior to delivery. A+

Market Analysis

We have been selling these cars for over ten years, and are well aware of there value. Let's face it--there are many of these around for cheap dollars in need of care. A private person could not duplicate this car (even doing the majority of the work themselves) for anywhere near our selling price. This is a terrific value. Own a true piece of automotive history by the same designer as Ferrari for the cost of a Toyota.

Even though it has the later crash bumpers, the black paintwork help those appendages blend in and the tan leather compliments the color perfectly. Average Pininfarina Spiders in good running order will generally run in the $7,000 to $11,000 range. At almost $19,000, this car is priced in the stratosphere. Is it worth it? One can't be sure. If you always wanted a new 124 or Pininfarina Spider, the chance may not come around again for quite some time. Then again, I'd rather have a Spider with a little bit of patina and mileage because this car is almost too nice to press into service.

1989 Maserati 430

Looking like a sharp edged BMW E30 sedan, few people in the market for a compact executive saloon noticed the Maserati 430 when it was new. It could have been the much higher price tag as compared to its German rivals. Either that, or they had nightmares from previous mechanical experiences with the related Maserati Biturbo. This was unfortunate, as the extra doors, newly added limited slip differential, revised suspension and more linear turbos attached to the 2.8 liter V6 made it a more pleasant driver. If you can find a good 430 today, it makes for an interesting modern classic and one that grabs the attention of the more astute passers by. This 430 for sale in Philadelphia has a low 26,000 miles on the clock and looks well kept.

At under $15,000, most people would think this is a lot of Maserati for the money, but realistically, the best examples of the 430 may fetch between $10,000 to $12,000 at most. The 430 suffers from less mechanical gremlins than the earlier Biturbo, but you still would be wise to make friends with your local specialist in town, as these are not the easiest cars to go about repairing. The blue interior may be a bit too blue for some, but personally, I find it quite attractive. I have a feeling this car may sit around at close to $15,000 for a while. If the seller knocks a few grand off the price, it may be a worthwhile purchase, as this looks to be one of the betters 430s out there for sale.

1987 Ferrari 328GTS

About a decade after the 308 debuted, Ferrari tried their hand at updating the mid-engine V8 formula and introduced the 328GTB and GTS. The revised model featured a 3.2 liter V8 that allowed mechanics to perform most of the maintenance without having to remove the engine, greatly reducing hourly labor costs. Thankfully most of the wedge shape survived, which was complemented by better integrated bumpers and the interior was upgraded with more modern switchgear. This 328GTS for sale in Southern California was taken in trade on a new 911 and strikes a unique pose in Oro Chiaro (Light Gold).

We just took in a really clean, very well maintained 1987 Ferrari 328 GTS in on trade on a new 991 Porsche Carrera and are thrilled to now offer this car for sale globally here on eBay. This 52,000 mile 328 is a true classic and comes in an incredibly rare Oro Chiaro Metallic paint with Beige and Brown interior. This Ferrari shows incredibly well and it’s a real treat to drive. Gold certainly isn’t a color you see on a 308 or 328 every day. I’m not the biggest fan of this hue, but it is interesting, being outside of the Ferrari norm. Good examples of 328s these days can range from $35,000 into the low $40,000 range. The best examples can bring upwards of $50,000. With this kind of mileage, a service history would be a must. I would hope, given that a Porsche dealer is offering this car, they at least got some information from the prior owner on what has been done. The condition of this 328 looks pretty good and if the maintenance checks out, the asking price of $35,000 is about spot on.

1999 Ferrari F550 Maranello

We've featured a number of Ferrari F550 Maranellos here at CICFS, and quite frankly, they never fall out of favor with me. The classic styling, V12 power and raw emotion of these cars has been discussed at length. This F550 for sale in California is aptly finished in the unique shade of California Azzurro.

1999 Ferrari F550 Maranello. Beautiful, excellent inside and out. This beautiful Ferrari F550 has been expertly maintained, is visually stunning and is a dream to drive. The California Azzurro Blue exterior is complemented by luxurious luggage, full leather package including the coveted quilted rear shelf and leather headliner. This California car has power seats, Ferrari Scuderia shields, stereo with 6CD changer and silver calipers. This car also has had regular scheduled services and oure price of $79k includes a fresh major service. Car has books, tools and keys.

About $79,000 is near average of what F550s are going for these days. Given this car has had a fresh service sweetens the deal even more. For those considering an F550, now isn't a bad time to pull the trigger, as collectors will no doubt be seeking the allure of a classic front-engined V12 Ferrari in the future, as they have in the past.

1984 Lamborghini Jalpa 3.5

Similar to the Espada, the Lamborghini Jalpa is one of the least expensive ways into owning a car with a the Raging Bull on the hood. A derivation of the earlier Urraco, the Jalpa had a production run for eight years with 410 cars produced. Equipped with a 3.5 liter V8 with 255 horsepower, the Jalpa was good for a 0-60 run in about 6 seconds. Nothing spectacular by today's standards, but then, most cars couldn't match the symphony which emerges from the exhaust pipes. This Jalpa for sale in California has but 22,000 miles on the clock and is being offered due to a move on the seller's part.

1984 Lamborghini Jalpa with only 36,780 Kilometers = 22,854 miles. Complete service has been done (documents on hand) $15,000 spent. 5-speed manual transmission with Targa top, interior and exterior in great condition. AM/FM original Blaupunkt Radio. This car is extremely rare. Always garaged. Moving out of the area and need to sell. I am the second owner.

Depending on how recently the service was completed, that will of course affect value. The asking price of $48,000 is rather high, as most good examples will reach into the high $30,000 range and possibly break $40,000. This car, looking cosmetically sound with two owners and relatively low mileage would realistically be worth somewhere between $35,000 and $42,000.

1984 Alfa Romeo GTV6 2.5

To this day, the Alfa Romeo GTV6 is revered by the Alfisti, as it was the swan song for rear drive sports coupes from the marque until the arrival of the 8C Competizione years later. The V6 engine in these cars were hailed as one of the most sonorous units to ever turn a crankshaft. This GTV6 for sale in Connecticut was stored for 10 years, but was purchased by a new owner three years ago and has had a host of work done to it.

This is an Auction for a 1984 Alfa Romeo GTV-6. Red Exterior/Tan Interior. I purchased this vehicle 3 years ago. It had been sitting in a warehouse for about 10 years. It had 110,000 miles on the odometer and I have put on over 3000 miles of driving. Engine runs Strong. Transmission Shifts in all Gears. Speedometer/Tach/Clock/Gauges all working. Paint is over 20 years Old, Interior is in Good Condition. Photos can be enlarged to show details. Registered and Insured. Bill of Sale Only. Car was displayed at the Concorso Ferrari Show 2011, Farmington Polo Grounds. The Following things have been done during my ownership:

-Clean out Gas Tank, New Sending Unit.
-New Fuel Pump and Inline Fuel Filter.
-New Catalytic Converter and Oxygen Sensor.
-New Y-pipe to Ansa Exhaust Muffler.
-New Front KONI shocks.
-Replaced rear wheel bearings, Left and Right, and retainer.
-Replaced Timing Belt and Mechanical Tensioner.
-Oil, Oil filter and Coolant changed.
-Replaced Transmission Oil.
-New Support Bearing and Drive Shaft Support.
-New Battery
-New Pirelli P6 Tires.
-New Rear Inboard Brake pads and rotors.
-New Brake Master Cyliinder.
-Added Rear Louvers, Original Aftermarket.

While this isn't the best GTV6 out there, it wears its patina well. My big concern would be the years it was stored, as these are cars that need regular exercise to stay in tune. While it has had a lot of work done, other problems may exist due to age rather than use. This is a good middle of the road car, clean enough to show along with not nice enough to drive regularly. Given that, a value of around $6,000 to $8,000 seems reasonable for one of Alfa's most memorable sports coupes.

2005 Maserati MC12

Developed to allow Maserati to enter the FIA GT Championship after a long racing hiatus, the MC12 was the first mid-engined Maserati since the demise of the V8 engined Bora in 1978. It could also be seen as one of the most expensive examples of platform sharing, as it was based on the Ferrari Enzo chassis. Longer, wider and taller than the Enzo, it had a lower top speed than the Enzo but was more aerodynamically efficient. Only 50 examples of this exotic were ever produced, and only seven were federalized for the US market. This example for sale in Florida is pretty much as new with 100 miles on the clock.

2005 Maserati MC12

Only 50 Maserati MC12's were produced worldwide and were based heavily on the Ferrari Enzo. Using the same engine with slight modifications, same gearbox and chasis as the Enzo the MC12 was built to be eligible to compete in the FIA GT Racing Series. In addition to its unique bodywork which generates more downforce at speed the MC12 has a removeable targa roof that also sets it apart within the supercar class. Less than 10 MC12's have been federalized for street use in the United States and both cars come with all records, books, and car covers.

This is certainly a breathtaking machine, but isn't for everyone, being that it is geared a bit more for track use than some other, more usable supercars. It even went around the Top Gear track slightly faster than its platform mate, the Enzo, as we can see from this clip:

1992 Alfa Romeo 164L

We've featured a few lower mileage Alfa Romeo 164 sedans here on CICFS, but this is one of the lowest and, quite frankly, most well preserved. With only two owners, the second being a retired CEO and collector, this 164 has had a level of care lavished on it that few have seen. It's most recent service was carried out by a Ferrari dealer. While it's not the S version or a 5-speed manual, you have to appreciate the fact that this car, for sale in the Florida Keys, looks like it just rolled out of the showroom.

1992 Alfa Romeo 164L. This is an agent assisted private sale. It is not dealer inventory. I'm here to answer questions and present reasonable offers to the seller without bias. The car is at the seller's estate in Lido Key, Florida. Undeniably a museum quality piece. Magnificent in every respect. Red exterior, factory color code AR130. Black interior, factory color code Nero. 10,606 documented miles.

The current owner is the second owner. He purchased it directly from the original owner five years ago with 5,428 miles on it. Needlessly to say he paid an inordinate amount of money for it. He purchased it to be a part of his collection and for sentimental reasons. He is an elder retired CEO and is now in the relinquishment phase of his collection. 100% factory original paint with absolutely no sun fade, cracking or blemish of any kind except for a rub mark on the right driver's side bumper (please see photo close up). This mishap is recent as the seller backed the car out of the garage and turned too sharp grazing a plastic rubbish container. Per my advise, the bumper was not touched up, spot painted or repainted to preserve the originality for the purists.

I preparation for the sale the seller had the local Ferrari Service Center perform a "major service" that includes timing belt change along with all the fluids changed and tuned to perfection. This service was performed on May 18th, 2012 and a copy of the service ticket is included below. Brand new tires with less than 30 miles on them. Proper Michelin MXV4's were installed. The install was done back in the end of May, 2012.

Original interior that's never had any corrective dye process done to it. It is absolutely 100% original with no hardening of the leather anywhere. Very much like new. No aftermarket anything except for the window tinting which was done to prevent the sun from harming the interior. The window tinting can be professionally removed easily and without damaging the car. Full set of factory booklets with Alfa Romeo factory pouch.

Everything works, no missing knobs, no loose door handles, no loose switches, no dim light bulbs, fully functional power seats, full functional non-leaking sunroof, both mirrors function perfectly.

The car has never been valet parked, never lent to anyone, never driven by a teenager, and never been on or hooked to a tow truck. Exterior Alfa Romeo emblems are original and in perfect condition with no fade or "separation." The underneath is as clean as the rest of the car. I saw the car on the lift recently when the major service was performed. It was too dark to photograph and the photos with flas weren't usable. The car drives perfectly straight without any pull to the left or right. The steering wheel is perfectly level when the car is going dead straight. Nothing is worse than a steering wheel that's off level even one degree.

The very best 164s out there may reach into the $12,000 to $15,000 range, with the sportier S models prized a little bit more. Even though I would prefer a 5-speed manual, this 164L looks great in classic red, accenting the crisp Pininfarina penned lines. As nice as this car is, I would almost rather buy one with a few more miles. A car maintained to this caliber certainly deserves to be preserved and driven sparingly for future generations to enjoy. If I were in the market for a 164, I'd want something I could use regularly.

1980 Fiat X1/9

I'm starting to get surprised at the number of mint condition Fiat X1/9s out there. With their propensity towards rusting and sundry electrical maladies, it is not an easy job keeping one of these in tip top shape for 32 years. It's curious that Fiat kept the 124 Spider on while selling this mid-engine targa right alongside, but these two cars ended up appealing to two very different kinds of open air enthusiasts. This X1/9 for sale in Florida is a very period metallic green and has but 40,000 miles covered between two owners.

This is a museum quality Fiat X1/9. EVERYTHING WORKS PERFECTLY. NOT covered in rust like every other X 1/9. This car has been kept in an Air Conditioned garage since purchase, and always maintained properly.

Good X1/9s of this vintage tend to hover around the $5,000 mark, so this one coming from a private seller at almost $7,000 represents a bit of a premium, but is about $1,000 cheaper than the X1/9 we featured for sale by the dealer in Ohio back in March. Realistically, this car may reach around $6,000, but the right buyer may come along and pony up.

2005 Ferrari 575M Superamerica

As a follow on to the Ferrari F550 Barchetta we featured last week, here is that car's direct successor, the 575M Superamerica. At the time this car was released, folding hard tops were coming into their own. However, Ferrari decided to be different and opted for a glass targa roof that articulated 180 degrees to lie flat on the trunk lid. The curiousness didn't stop there. The glass employed electrochromic technology, developed by Saint Gobain, which was a first for automotive applications. This enabled the passengers to control the exact level of light they wanted to enter the cabin through the mere turn of a dial. Only 599 of these flip top Ferraris were made. This one for sale in Florida is being offered by the dealer which sold it on when it was new.

2005 Ferrari 575M Superamerica

2005 575 Superamerica! 1 of only 559 worldwide. This is a local car sold new by us. Options include GTC Package, Electric Daytona Seats, Scuderia Shields, Yellow Tachometer, Rear Wall in Beige Leather, High Power HiFi Sound System, 6 Disc Changer, Black Stitching and Daytona Inserts.

While the Superamerica offers greater all weather practicality with none of the compromises of the F550 Barchetta, I still can't help that a premium is being charged for an aesthetically less pleasing Ferrari. As neat as the electrochromic roof is, it does appear a bit awkward when the roof is lowered over trunk lid. So either you get good top down looks with the F550 Barchetta or more usability with the 575M. Personally, I'd choose the Superamerica over the Barchetta, as the flying buttresses do a better job of masking the long trunk lid. When new, these cars were around $280,000. Today, you can expect prices for low mileage examples to hover around $200,000.
