1994 Maserati Ghibli

If the Maserati Biturbo represents Alejandro de Tomaso's effort to breathe new life into the Maserati brand, then  the Tipo AM336 Ghibli represents Fiat's attempt to breathe new life into the Biturbo.  None other than Marcello Gandini was contracted to update the exterior design while maintaining most of the core Biturbo dimensions.  The result, while awkward in basic proportions, has a great early-90s sporting look to it; we especially like the boxed fender flares, like on yesterday's Lancia Delta HPE, and the projector beam headlights.

Those who have explored the Ghibli in the form of internet videos will probably agree with us when we say that you can really hear these things breathe.  It's not due to a lack of power - 284hp from the 90 degree 24V V6 was more than adequate - but rather, due to the engine recipe, so to speak.  With four valves per cylinder and a significantly oversquare power cylinder comprising a 91.6mm bore and 63mm stroke, not to mention turbocharged aspiration and a wide-open 90 degree V-angle for even better port flow, the Ghibli was designed to breathe.

Named after a wind just like the rest of the Maseratis, the Ghibli debuted at the 1966 Turin Motor Show. Due to the limited resources, it shared its tubular frame with the Quattroporte sedan and the Mexico grand tourer. The body was the work of Ghia’s new chief designer, Giorgio Giugiaro.

With mileage exceeding 75,000 miles, we would have to imagine that this Ghibli has managed to keep itself on the road more often than not.  We wouldn't expect parts to be as simple to source as Alfa Romeo parts are in North America, but European enthusiasm for these cars is solid, so we're optimistic.  The trim is all present on this one, so other than some routine maintenance and the occasional unexpected part failure, the future owner of this car shouldn't need to source many parts to begin with.

Forgive our enthusiasm, but we ourselves are highly tempted by this Ghibli.  It's no collector car, so mileage isn't a concern.  And, in this case, the mileage is a source of encouragement anyway.  The color combination is very fitting, the aftermarket wheels work well, and the overall condition is quite presentable.  Is the Ghibli update enough to squash the complaints that many have about the Biturbo?  On paper, it would seem so.

1984 Maserati Biturbo

As the Tipo 138 Maserati Coupe and Spyder take over as the de facto used Maseratis, it's time to refresh on the original used Maserati: the Biturbo.  Born out of a newfound desire for profitability (where have we seen this before?), the Biturbo was the result of de Tomaso acquisition of the Maserati brand.  Whereas Maserati had previously produced GTs and mid-engined sports cars, they sought to compete down-market with the likes of BMW and their 3-series.  Selling to a market with higher volume, de Tomaso's Maserati hoped to scale up production to the point of financial success.

With a name like Biturbo, naturally the engine would be a major focus of the development effort, but were nine distinct engines over 13 years really necessary?  Sure, there is a bit of context to the constant churn and development.  Italian cars would need engines displacing under 2,000cc in order to avoid excess taxes, whereas foreign markets could engine the full 2,491cc offering.  And, fuel-injection was more or less replacing carburetion during the Biturbo's time period, so it would stand to logic that Maserati would source a system midway through the production of the Biturbo.  The mid-cycle bump up to 2,790cc is an ironclad method of increasing power and reducing lag on a turbocharged engine.  But a complete head redesign for the introduction of a 24-valve variant?  Well, even that might have made sense too, as it was likely intended to carry on further into models such as the successor to the Biturbo, the AM336 Ghbli.

You are bidding on a mechanically sorted Maserati Biturbo with an unmatched pedigree.

History: This was the personal car of the owner of Fremont Foreign Auto, an Italian car specialist in Fremont, CA. He swapped the drivetrain along with the rear end, wheels, and some interior components from the donor vehicle, which I was told had covered less than 20k miles.

Reliability: Fuel-injected 2.5L twin turbo V6 and five-speed manual transmission from a 1987 Maserati Zagato Spyder (same platform, so everything bolts right in). Fuel injection cures many of the reliability problems that colored early Biturbos' reputations.
- California BAR certified
- New fuel pump and alternator were installed in November 2017.
- No other needs or issues. I would drive it across country tomorrow.

Character: The throbbing exhaust note and 3,000rpm turbo rush give the car a far richer personality than contemporary BMW, Mercedes, or Alfa alternatives. The chrome tubing and wrinkle-coated valve covers under the hood is more in-line with Ferrari than even Alfa.

Body:
- Paint is excellent and body is straight
- Surface corrosion around the edges of the hood vents is the only rust

Interior:
- Aftermarket CD/Bluetooth stereo with phone/microphone interface
- Period correct Momo steering wheel with Maserati crest
- Odometer inoperable but 56,514 indicated
- A/C condenser kicks on, no visible leaks, but air is slightly cooler than ambient at best

We can't in good faith suggest that you'll notice the 10hp bump provided by the fuel-injected engine that the previous owner swapped in.  From what it sounds like, this swap to fuel-injection carries the sole benefit of reliable operation - the seller goes so far as to state that the carb'd cars tainted the reputation of the Biturbo.  Having met a very happy Biturbo owner at an Italian car event, we can get on board with this thinking.  No, an engine swap is probably not in the best interest of the car's value, but a useable, reliable Biturbo is worth something to many.

Taking the seller's word to be good, good on him for selling the car rather than letting it sit.  A rust-free Biturbo like this deserves some protection from moisture and the sun's rays.  The interior, by the way, is preserved in remarkable condition for one of these cars.  Take a look at the photos in detail, and you might notice the shift pattern. That's right - it's a dogleg manual transmission with 1st off the H.  Spend some time diagnosing the weak A/C and get this thing out on the road to enjoy the snarly 90 degree V6.  We heard that those are cool again - ask Alfa.

2006 Maserati Quattroporte

We are willing to overlook quite a bit in the name of promoting a metallic brown Quattroporte.  Aftermarket wheels?  The unfavorable DuoSelect automated manual transmission?  Minor details, when there's brown paint involved.

The DuoSelect automated manual transmission, making use of a dry clutch and essentially a robotic clutch slave cylinder, is the subject of criticism from both the automotive press and the Maserati community.  The press was not impressed with the sudden, direct shifts of the automated manual in automatic mode, which seemed more at home in something like a Ferrari F430.  The Maserati community was alarmed by premature clutch wear, due mostly to poor modulation of the clutch when moving from a stop, especially on an incline.  The criticism may have played a role in lackluster initial sales as well, because in 2007, Maserati began offering the Quattroporte with an automatic ZF transmission with improved drivability, first as an option, and then as standard.

Why then, suggest that the readers of Classic Italian Cars for Sale consider purchasing an earlier DuoSelect Quattroporte?  First, we haven't driven one, so we don't know just how bad it really is.  Based on our experience with automated manuals, they're only really only a hassle when moving at a relaxed pace.  We're no strangers to the deep rasp of a 4.2 liter Maserati V8 at full boil, so our modest suggestion would be to drive the wheels off of it as often as possible and keep the transmission in manual mode.  Not so difficult, right?

When negotiating for this low-mileage example, it would be wise to negotiate a price the includes only the OEM wheels, which the seller is offering with the sale.  Just don't let the seller know how much you dig the full wood steering wheel or the tan Poltrona Frau leather with brown piping.

2004 Maserati Coupe GT

 

Walking to work in Dearborn, I'm bombarded daily with the flat-plane crank soundtrack of the recently-revealed Ford Mustang GT350's 5.2L V8 - an impressive nod to the signature element of any Maranello V8. Odd then, that I'm left longing for the burble of the anomalous (for an Italian) American-style cross-plane Ferrari V8 that propelled Maserati through the turn of the century. My neighbor up the street had a Maser Coupe Cambiacorsa when I was in high school, and I could hear it from a mile away - affording me enough time to run out the front door and listen to it blip through the gears as it slowed into the driveway. While this Coupe GT is the less-common, conventional 6-speed manual, I'd gladly trade the raucous paddle-actuated downshifts for extended clutch life and the enjoyment provided by a third pedal.

Having witnessed the damage that UV rays can inflict upon leather dashboards of Ferrari 456 and 550s, I approve of the seller's use of a dash cover. A private inspection would cost 1% of the asking price, and hopefully vindicate the seller's assertion of religious service history and great mechanical condition. For me, the greatest appeal in the Maserati V8 is the availability of replacement engines - at a quarter of the price of, say, a Ferrari 360 V8. Keep a spare in the garage, and drive the Maser with the windows down and the tach up.

1975 Maserati Merak Targa

Well, first off, it's a nice example that's worth taking a look at; the Merak is one of the prettier "wedge" designs from Giugiaro, even if it lacked the performance of its big brother Bora. 1975 Maserati Merak AM122-2182

Customization by Steering Wheel Inc. in South Florida circa. 1975. This particular car was delivered new to the US in 1975, and had it's roof customized by Tom Clark Sr. the owner of SWI. The book this car is documented in is on page 222 of "The Maserati Road Cars, Post war production cars 1946-1979 by Richard Crump/Rob de la Rive Box".

The strengthening of the chassis was done at the sills, the windscreen pillars were gusseted on the seams (see book photograph, main picture). This part of the roof work was done by local company, Trust Manufacturing Co.

It came with a blue interior originally, which has since been changed to the current caramel hides you see today. It is in driver condition, with many documents and receipts for work done in the past 30+ years.

With her original Campagnolo wheels, she has had 1 re-spray (by Gene Winfield btw for you SoCal hot rod nuts), in 1982, major services (hydraulics/clutch) in 2003 and 2008, and remains largely original with 76,9xx miles showing.

The paint is not perfect, nor is it a show car, but more of a "good ol' nail of a driver" (as my friend says). Purchased new in Florida in 1975, she then went to California and remained with the same owner for the next 37 years. Tons of paperwork and receipts go with the car, detailed documentation and papers for everything that was worked on.

The Merak is really just a nice, California, no major issues Driver, that needs a new home, she starts right up @ cold, idles great, doesn't run hot, shifts, brakes and drives down the road quite well. She has never been wrecked, or damaged, clean, no issues, straight car, with no Smog too!!! (we have a Video of a Cold start and a quick drive off in her).

Please keep in mind, this car is 39 years old! It has never been restored, it has it's imperfections, so if you're looking for a "show" car, move on! I am upfront and blunt, I do not need to sugarcoat things like some people who sell. Pooling through the documentation on her, what I'm asking for the car and than some, adds up in receipts alone...

A clean, no stories, California Title (1975 NO SMOG!) comes with the car. The Merak also comes with (2) keys, original Owner's Manual, and 40+ pages of receipts/documentation.

Some areas of attention are as follows.

-All of the hydraulic lights on the dash work, and gauges (except noted gas gauge)

-A/C car, but currently non-functional, fan motor and defrost etc. run though

-Crack rear flying buttress (picture)

-Crack front bumper (picture)

-Chip in hood above Trident (picture)

-Hood latch is not working properly (hence the "ajar" look of the fitment per pictures, common)

-Driver window is slow going up/down

-Gas gauge is INOP

Yesterday on our sister site German Cars For Sale Blog, I wrote up a converted Porsche 928 - questioning the sanity of anyone that would take the roof off of an otherwise perfectly good coupe. I'm not sure why this was such a trend, but obviously it extended into the 1970s as well. It was reportedly converted when new and is generally original. These original run Meraks - during the Citroen ownership period - generally aren't the ones that are the most sought after, nor is this one in the best condition. But it's a neat piece of history for Maserati fans and I'm sure would be welcome at any meet; as a conversation starter alone, it's worth the story, especially with the documentation there!

1987 Maserati Biturbo Zagato

The Maserati Biturbo has always been a car that fascinated me; perhaps it's that I grew up in the 1980s where box-tacular designs were the norm, but there was something about the styling of the Biturbo that I always found appealing. It was tight and compact, sporty with enough flare that it really stood out. I was especially a fan of the dished wheels and still am. Compared to the somewhat oddly proportioned Quattroporte III, the Biturbo just looked right. That continued under the hood, where from a performance standpoint the Biturbo was fairly impressive; at least, on paper. In an era where 140-150 horsepower was considered "good", the twin turbocharged V6 put out a lofty 180 horsepower. Not all of that transferred into pulse-pounding performance, but still it was more than adequate for the time period; remember, that's more than some American V8s were pushing at the time. Still, the Biturbo didn't gain the best reputation, meaning you can pick up clean examples today for not much money, such as this clean example from Ocean Drive Motors:

Though they look very similar to the sedan, the Spyder version of the Biturbo was styled by Zagato and rode on a shortened chassis, making it strictly a two seater. The color combination on this particular car is nice and understated; red and white were quite popular, so it's nice to see something a little different. While I'm not a fan of the overly-plush looking seats from 1980s Maseratis, overall the condition of this car inside and out is very clean. There are some needs, such as the replacement top, but if you're on a budget and want some unusual Italian fun in the sun, this Biturbo could be a fun sun project car. Overall it is priced pretty accurately in the marketplace for these Biturbos.

1970 Maserati Indy 4200

When looking to replace the Mexico model, Maserati both looked towards the future and the past. Named to celebrate two Indianapolis 500 victories in 1939 and 1940 with a 8CM, the Indy was decidedly futuristic compared to Maseratis of the 1960s. Along with the Ghibli, Vignale's new design would take Maserati through the 1970s with additions of the mid-engined and similarly styled Bora and Merak, but the more traditional Indy led the way. Design : by Michelloti for Vignale - lovely hatchback gran turismo seating 4 with huge trunk area. First Maserati unibody construction - rock solid. Gorgeous V-8 engine by Alfieri. Original factory installed power steering - a rare and desirable option for an Indy.

Condition: Car was restored in the recent past and is an excellent quality driver. Overall condition would be about 8.5 of 10. Interior is new (leather and carpet) and in pristine condition. While the restoration is more recent, the condition isn't perfect; and to me, that's fine - allowing you to drive the car and not worry about ruining value or condition. This Indy has power steering which is a plus, but is the lower spec 4200 motor instead of the full-bore 4.7 or later 4.9. While today these Indys aren't worth what the big brother Ghibli is, that message apparently hasn't stopped this owner from asking top dollar. Hagerty lists a condition 1 4.2 Indy as a $60,000 car; this car is priced $10,000 above that although the seller notes it's not perfect. However, you could easily drop $10,000 or more trying to get a bad Indy slightly better, so if you like the color combination a well placed call and some cash might just change that figure to something you'd like a bit more.

1985 Maserati Quattroporte – REVISIT

This 1985 Maserati Quattroporte is one that we featured almost two years ago and is back up for sale in California. Series III Quattroportes are rarely this nice and are a tempting choice for fans of the 1980s who want the utmost in exclusivity.

The Maserati Quattroporte was, and is, the individualists choice when it comes to luxury sedans. These cars have always been about sheer style and brashness; about as close as we will ever get to a four door Ferrari. The Quattroporte III's production spanned a decade but little more than 2,000 were ever produced. It's styling set the tone for the next two decades at Maserati while it's V8 engine and abundant use of wood and leather on the inside was classic Maserati. This example for sale in California is very well sorted and has a restrained air in metallic gray.

ORIGINAL low mileage California car in excellent condition. Purchased for roughly $12,000 by me. Note: Shipping to Europe/UK easily arranged and contacts in place. It is very reasonable from CA and I am happy to arrange this for the buyer.

It is an automatic (727 Torqueflight original) and all of the key work needed has been done including a full rebuild of the transmission and much detailed work listed below. Totally renewed stainless exhaust and Cats passing smog for CA. It is also in one of the most attractive color combinations for this car. More pictures can be sent if you email me. This car has always been garaged including after the recent work was done.

This is an EXTREMELY rare car and any in decent shape they are getting rarer. There were 2,143 produced and this is one of 1,806 4.9 L automatics (to put this in perspective over 1m mustangs by year 2 of production and 8 million total!). Ridiculously underpriced in US. Sale in UK recently at 29,000 pounds and nice example in Germany at over 42,000 Euro.

Beautiful and extensively gone through collector owned car for sale. I own 3 of these cars and this one has undergone a lot of recent work and is only being sold only as I am moving forward with 2 other cars and just cannot have 3! Huge amount of time, effort and money spent. I know that I will be unlikely to recoup the funding spent but I do hope that it will go to someone who can continue the process. Here is the report from the Maserati Factory:

Maserati Quattroporte AM330/us*5310* (USA Serial number - ZAMBC1100FA305310)
Produced on January 1985, 4.9 litres, automatic gearbox, external colour "Antracite", interior in "Natural" leather. It was delivered on February 1985 to the Importer "Maserati Automobile Inc." in Baltimore (USA). Here are excerpts from the original ad from when I bought the the car:

1985 Maserati Quattroporte

The Maserati Quattroporte was, and is, the individualists choice when it comes to luxury sedans. These cars have always been about sheer style and brashness; about as close as we will ever get to a four door Ferrari. The Quattroporte III's production spanned a decade but little more than 2,000 were ever produced. It's styling set the tone for the next two decades at Maserati while it's V8 engine and abundant use of wood and leather on the inside was classic Maserati. This example for sale in California is very well sorted and has a restrained air in metallic gray.

1985 Maserati Quattroporte

"Life's Been Good" to this 1985 Maserati Quattroporte...When Joe Walsh stated "My Maserati Does 185"...he had a circa 1962 Maserati 5000GT, capable of at least 170+ mph. All Maserati automobiles equipped with this four camshaft/hemi/V-8, starting with the mid-1950's Maserati 450S race car, through the limited production 5000GT (33 produced) , ending with the Quattroporte (2155 produced) were guaranteed to raise the excitement level. The soundtrack and power delivery of this engine was and is a winner from day one.

This rust free, exceptional & all original 67,959 mile Maserati Quattroporte has had the best of care. Maintenance receipts for over $12,000 and owner's / repair manuals come with the car. There is no doubt previous owner, "Style Icon" Tatiana Sorokko, a Bay Area fashion fixture, enjoyed her days with this car. Paint, chrome, body trim, and leather/wood interior are all in remarkable, near new condition. The photographs are representative of the actual condition of the car.

Drive report: we enlisted a Maserati expert to evaluate the car. He has repaired Maserati cars for 30+ years and reported as follows:

Front suspension and shock absorbers quiet and smooth, no clunks etc. Tire condition excellent with excellent wear pattern.
Rear suspension excellent / rear axle gear quiet - no appreciable backlash.
Brake pad and rotor condition: very good to excellent. Tires are new.
Transmission shifts properly / excellent fluid condition.
Engine condition: notes include very clean carburetors- no damage / stripped screws (very common)
Oil Pressure very high (indicative of low mileage)
Operating temperature proper / electric fan actuation and wiring good
Engine power delivery proper (280 hp all present)
Belts and hoses all at current maintenance level
Gauges / lights and other electrical items worked properly when tested.
Road test shows a top condition, nice driving car.
Originally a $65,000 car in 1985.

When I purchased this car it was in very good original condition and had benefitted by being owned by someone who used it regularly and kept it in very good condition. The undercarriage was immaculate and the car was really in excellent condition. That said it was over described and needed a few things refreshed - many of these are really deferred maintenance issues for a car of this age. In short, it was a really good car but needed some “refreshing”. Basically, the car had not been messed with and I spoke with the earlier owner who had sold it at a cancer charity auction! The company I bought if from owned it a short time and it was over described.

The story of this car will be featured on an upcoming article on Quattroporte IIIs but I will summarize the work done with some estimates of costs:

EXHAUST: New stainless steel exhaust from front to back and four CATS to make it fully CA compliant. NOS headers for the car also to bring the emissions system into full working order as well as the setting up of the original CA emissions system. This required a great deal of work as this year of QP III was not in the CA database but we got it done. (approx $4,000 (parts, labour, shipping, CATS, admin and shop time)

BODY: The body is in excellent condition - a true California car. There were some minor issues.
-All the side lights and turn signal lenses were replaced with NOS from MIE (US Maserati supplier of choice)
There was a dent in the lower side body moulding and a NOS part from MIE was purchased and installed (easy fix)
The headlight surround is a unique part on US cars. I was specifically told by the seller it was undamaged but it was broken and a NOS unit was bought from MIE and the front headlight assembly was removed and replaced.
Paint is excellent and a good color but a small touch up by the left rear light is required along with repair of the rubber on the bumpers which is an easy fix.
Approx $1,000 in parts and labor

SUSPENSION AND BRAKES ETC: - All in good condition and alignment was done on purchase.
Damage to A Frame front suspension due to sellers improper towing (no recourse of course) - Undamaged A frames sourced and shipped and installed
As a matter of course I have purchased tie rod ends and ball joints which should go on the car at a convenient time
New rear shocks (4) have been purchased and are in the trunk ($800)
Fronts are fine but I have a supplier for adjustable shocks for the front end which really transform the car. Not required but something to consider in the future along with the steering rack (under $500)
$2,000 plus in parts and labor

MOTOR AND MOTOR BAY
The car was in great condition but had the standard fixes required and the key money was spent getting this 100%
Complete motor detailing using 100% original Maserati parts
Valve cover gaskets removed and repainted in proper Maserati factory crackle paint
Motor bay detailing including cadmium plating parts.
New original motor decals
New shocks hood lifts for bonnet (hood) and boot (trunk)
New Old Stock replacement fuse box
New battery
Distributor and tune up parts (spark plugs etc)
Full service up to date - fluids, etc
Rebuilding of all 4 carburettors with original kits from MIE
New wiring cavis in original style
NEW PARTS AS NEEDED - oil sending unit etc
MOTOR SET UP - car was taken to STEWARTS in Sacramento for specialist work. They did a lot of work on getting the car running right, rebuilding the carbs, missing carb parts (who knows where they were lost!), vacuum set up). Essentially, their job was to check over the motor and make sure it was working right, safe and set up right. A list of their work is on the bills.
One running issue was caused by a faulty CAT which was replaced on warranty
(Approx $5,000)

INTERIOR -
broken door handles interior x 2 were sourced and rechromed
grab handles replaced with NOS
Interior wood was described as “in remarkable near new condition”. It was a lie - the wood was damaged around the transmission selector and the laquer had turned milky white on the doors and dash. This is a common issue for this car. HOWEVER TO DO IT RIGHT IS IS A DASH OUT JOB. It was done right with the dash out and wood sent to experts and Madera Concepts in CA who did an amazing job and a perfect match on the transmission selector section. I can’t say enough about how well they did - it looks amazing and is show ready.

TRANSMISSION - This was also described as perfect and it was not. It needed a full rebuild but it is the lovely 727 Torqueflight so easy to do. This work has been fully done along with a full rebuild of the starter (why not as it is a Mopar unit and the transmission is out)

MISCELLANEOUS - too much to mention as all things that were noted by me were fixed as they we noted with new parts. This included wiper blades and covers and a host of small parts etc. NOS jack purchased and in the trunk.
TO DO - A car like this can always be improved and it is in excellent condition. There are probably a couple of areas I would think about looking at in future as noted above. I have assisted with the design of a new set of Ohlins that are made for this car and would be a useful upgrade. The mirrors were done nicely but always a weak spot in this car. I am told that MIE does a new set and it might be worth looking at in due course but these are good. The tires are new but not the Michelin XWXs. I have a set you can buy if you want. I cannot think of anything else needed.

Current status. The car had just finished having the transmission done and is with a relative at his automotive shop in Roseville (Sacramento) CA. Any inspection is welcome and will arrange shipment. I have lots of bills and details that I can send to you also.

Description of QP III
The new Quattroporte III came to the market during the De Tomaso era for Maserati. It was designated 'AM 330 Berlina Quattroporte’ but was quickly known as the Quattroporte III. Although production continued into the Biturbo era the selling mates of the QP III as shown in a brochure package were the Kyalami, Khamsin, Merak 2000/SS

Here is how it was described by Ermanno Cozza:

In spite of its considerable size, Giugiaro's classic styling gave the Quattroporte III the visual concept of strength and speed; a long imposing bonnet, once more housing a V8 engine, sloped down to a large trapezoidal chrome radiator grille adorned with the traditional trident, flanked by pair of twin rectangular headlamps.

Its low wide body, featuring a character line along its flanks, allowed the low roof line to flow gracefully, via the acute angled rear quarter-lights and a full-width slanting rear window, to an ample boot compartment. With the Northern American car regulations in mind, the Quattroporte III was fitted with heavy rubber inset impact-absorbing bumpers, giving the car a solid imposing look. Thanks to its width and roof height, the interior had the atmosphere of 'a living room', without any loss of light or visibility. Make no mistake, this was car was much bigger than it looked!

The interior was comfortable, elegant and functional. The dashboard, trimmed in rich leather with briar-wood veneered panels, housed a large rectangular easy to read instrument panel. The anatomically designed seating was upholstered in 'glove-soft' Italian leather, as were the finishing panels of the velour roof lining. The leather trimmed and wood-veneered centre console, housed the air conditioning controls, radio, gear lever and an armrest which doubled as a lid for the convenient storage compartment. Naturally the car was fitted with air conditioning as standard.

Originally a $65,000 car in 1985, a Quattroporte such as this would generally sell in the $8,000 to $14,000 range today. Given the car's prominent previous owner, condition and run down by a marque expert, it will more than likely command a value in the upper reaches of that range, provided the right buyer comes along.

Mid-Engined Maseratis: 1977 Maserati Bora & Merak SS

Maserati is one of those companies that came back from the brink. Several times. Through multiple owners the marque somehow bumbled its way throughout the 20th century, eventually being absorbed by Fiat, where it is currently enjoying a renaissance. At the end of the 1970s, however, the situation was bleak. Maserati's owner, Citroën, went into receivership in 1975. The new controlling group, PSA Peugeot Citroën declared this applied to Maserati as well. After ownership was transferred to an Italian government and eventually, Alejandro de Tomaso, they were forced to lumber along with the same products until de Tomaso geared up production of the Quattroporte III, Kyalami (based on the De Tomaso Longchamp) and the Biturbo.

The last holdovers from the Citroën era are the two vehicles we see here, the Bora and Merak. These were limited production sports cars that, while pretty, couldn't secure the future of the company. The first car we'll take a look at is the Bora. This car's V8 engine could trace its lineage back to the 450S race car, with four cams, 16 valves and hemispherical combustion chambers. Just over 500 Boras were built, with an almost equal number distributed between the 4.7 and 4.9 liter models. This 4.9 for sale in Miami is a low mileage barn find and was sold new in Florida.

Bora values languished for a while, but in the last couple of years have shot up. These cars represented everything great about Maserati, from eye-catching good looks to a sonorous, race bred engine. It seems that collectors have finally taken notice. The seller is asking all the money for this one. Given the interesting history and very low mileage, I'm not surprised.

The next Maserati we'll take a look at is this 1977 Merak SS, which is sometimes described as the junior version of the Bora. The Merak is two cylinders down on the Bora, sharing its engine with the Citroën SM. The smaller engined allowed for limited rear seating, best for either children or small luggage. This car would compete with the Lamborghini Urraco and Ferrari 308GT4 as a sort of entry-level super car. This Merak SS is also for sale in Florida, a little further north of the Bora, situated in Orlando.

This a 1977 Maserati Merak SS, a very unique car. It has a great color combination, orange exterior with black leather interiors. The car has A/C, radio cassette, power windows (are not working), and tilt wheel. It also has a 5 speed transmission. This car has a V6 engine with 3 carburetors. The mileage is only 14,152 (exempt). It also has Campagnolo wheels and a tornado mirrors. This car runs good. It is one of those cars that everyone enjoys looking at it because of it's unique features and very rare.

This car is being sold by dealer. If you are not a dealer, you will be require as a traditional buyer to pay for Florida tax,tag and title. Personally, I'm a fan of the pre-1976 Meraks, as they had the stylish Citroën SM dashboard. This feature would disappear after Citroën went belly-up. In 1976, they would transition to a dashboard with more square aesthetics. Given the smaller engine, it's no surprise the Merak is more affordable than the Bora. The best Meraks out there may bring in the $50,000 to $60,000 range. This example is quite presentable, if a little bit rough around the edges and has the problem with the non-funtioning windows. Expect an example like this to fetch somewhere in the $35,000 to $40,000 territory.

With the sixth generation just introduced, the Quattroporte has become the symbol for Maserati’s newfound success in the North American marketplace. Long from the general public’s memory when the company returned in 2002, their sports cars and luxury saloons have become the go to choice for those seeking something a little bit different than the mainstream luxury choice. During the 1980s, while Maserati foisted the unreliable Biturbo on the world, the Quattroporte was being produced in small numbers with the stalwart four cam V8 under its hood. Nowadays, these big cruisers can be had for cheap, even ones that are in decent shape. This early production Quattroporte for sale in Germany was recently imported from Italy and has the rare ZF 5-speed manual gearbox.

For sale is a Maserati Quattroporte of 1979, German H- approval in full running order. This is the legendary 4.2 L V8 with 260 hp and the ZF sport gearbox. From this last hand-built Quattroporte only 50 pieces were produced. The car was driven in 2012 directly from Italy to Germany in April 2012 and got the full acceptance, without flaws. After that, I've done about 5,000 km without problems.

Equipment and state :
1. The paint is "Italian" that is to say here and there it is not perfect.
2. Rear left wheel well has a couple of small rust bubbles but nothing terrible
3. The bottom sill needs some work. The TÜV 2012, said it was still okay, but later they will need to be fixed.
4. The radiator hoses should be replaced
5. The leather is not broken, cracked or has holes, but a fine patina.
6. The wood is in good condition.
7. All electrical helper function, like eg the seat adjustment, power windows, etc.
8. Climate control does not work because you have to be prepared only on the German standard
9. The expensive magnesium wheels (5x) are in good condition.

I have described to the best of my knowledge and belief the car to be free of troubles. There are no new cars and classic cars in the classification of a 3 - get ready to drive with flaws and room for improvement and beautification, but at the price absolutely realistic. The minimum price is well below the price in Mobile, etc since I have the car under note no space. Of this rare model, there are only very few copies because most Quattroporte were cannibalized by the much more expensive Ghibli Kahmsin and to provide them with technology, so this is certainly of great interest to collectors.

The car is a private sale without any return, exchange, warranty or conversion. If the reserve price is reached, the buyer must pay the half of the purchase price immediately and collect the car within 14 days in Bernau am Chiemsee and pay the balance upon completion of auction. As the seller describes, the car is listed on Mobile.de for €10,900 (~ $14,733 USD). For a Quattroporte in good nick you can expect to pay somewhere between $9,000 and $15,000, so this one falls towards the high end a bit, considering a few items need to be addressed. However, the reserve has been set below that price. If you're looking for a classic luxury car with almost unmatched exclusivity, these Series III Quattroportes are hard to beat.
