1987 Maserati Biturbo Zagato

The Maserati Biturbo has always been a car that fascinated me; perhaps it's that I grew up in the 1980s where box-tacular designs were the norm, but there was something about the styling of the Biturbo that I always found appealing. It was tight and compact, sporty with enough flare that it really stood out. I was especially a fan of the dished wheels and still am. Compared to the somewhat oddly proportioned Quattroporte III, the Biturbo just looked right. That continued under the hood, where from a performance standpoint the Biturbo was fairly impressive; at least, on paper. In an era where 140-150 horsepower was considered "good", the twin turbocharged V6 put out a lofty 180 horsepower. Not all of that transferred into pulse-pounding performance, but still it was more than adequate for the time period; remember, that's more than some American V8s were pushing at the time. Still, the Biturbo didn't gain the best reputation, meaning you can pick up clean examples today for not much money, such as this clean example from Ocean Drive Motors:

Though they look very similar to the sedan, the Spyder version of the Biturbo was styled by Zagato and rode on a shortened chassis, making it strictly a two seater. The color combination on this particular car is nice and understated; red and white were quite popular, so it's nice to see something a little different. While I'm not a fan of the overly-plush looking seats from 1980s Maseratis, overall the condition of this car inside and out is very clean. There are some needs, such as the replacement top, but if you're on a budget and want some unusual Italian fun in the sun, this Biturbo could be a fun sun project car. Overall it is priced pretty accurately in the marketplace for these Biturbos.

Ah the Lancia Beta. Fodder for the petrolhead who will point out that everything which has four wheels and Italian is crankier than a two year old who missed a meal. This was the car that brought Lancia to their knees and would turn out to be a big factor in their pullout from both the US and UK markets. However, should this car be maligned as much as it is? Maybe it's about time for a second look. Let's check out two rather different Beta models, starting off with this red Zagato for sale in Massachusetts.

1981 Lancia Zagato Targa Convertible. Unsually excellent condition exterior, interior and mechanically. I purchased the car from the original owner about 5 years ago and have put on less than 2000 miles. Always garaged either by me or previous owner. Have all receipts, owners manual, repair manual, window sticker.

Exterior: Sporty, original Rosso exterior. No accidents, no dents. Rubber bumpers are clean and don't sag over front turn signals. Paint is original, shiny and presents extremely well. Hairline cracks around gas cap- but not chipped. Chrome is clean and not pitted. Glass is clean and not scratched. Targa top fits tightly and is not cracked or chipped. Vinyl convertible top is original, in excellent condition and fits tight - plastic window is cloudy and I haven't tried to polish it. All latches for both the targa top and rear convertible top work perfectly. The original Lancia sticker is on the plastic rear window. I have the original convertible top boot, too. Wheels are in great condition with virtually no curb rash and original "L" center caps are not cracked. Tires all match and have plenty of tread. Rear taillights are clear and not cracked. Rear emblems are original. No missing parts or trim. No rust other than very small, area on the rocker panel right behind the rear wheels (see photos) otherwise absolutely rust free. Overall, the exterior presents beautifully.

Interior: Black leather. Very, very clean with the only issue being the seams coming apart and some color wear on the driver's seat which is easily repaired. Other than that, the upholstery is clean and not ripped, the door panels are clean and, again, not ripped or torn. Everything works - intermittent wipers, A/C blows cold and ventilation system ie: fan, defrost, heat - works perfectly. AM/FM stereo cassette is original and works great as well as the electric antenna. All gauges work, though fuel gage bounces around when 1/2 full. Power windows work, but occasionally blow fuses (hand crank is visible in photos). Carpet is perfect original and has drivers side carpeted mat. Digital clock works. All interior lights and dash lights work. Rubber gaskets around doors are pliant and no leaks at all. Door jambs are clean and no rust. No missing parts or trim.

Mechanical: Drives great. Timing belt was replaced by previous owner. I had a center muffler custom made when I bought the car. Rear muffler is fine. New battery. Brakes, suspension, work fine. Transmission shifts cleanly (as clean as a FWD car can) and doesn't grind in any gear. Steering has great feedback and no issues there. Engine is well maintained and fuel injection system works fine. Check out the photos to see the clean engine compartment. Clear plastic fuse box cover is cracked, but still there. New radiator fan switch installed within the last two years and that works fine. Trunk is perfect with original spare wheel, jack, tool kit and spotless carpeting. I have a made to order California Car cover as well.

This Lancia Zagato is a unique and extremely fun car to drive especially with the targa roof off and the rear top down. You've got room for kids in the backseat and the trunk has decent space. There were 2400 Zagatos imported to the US between 1979 and 1982. The 81's and 82's had fuel injection and slightly increased horsepower. If you are familiar with this model and Betas in general, most survivors are in poor condition cosmetically and mechanically. For spending at least the last five years of its live in New England, it’s amazing the tin worm hasn’t set in more on the bodywork. This is also an original car, which makes it stand out from the crowd of refurbished Betas that still exist. It’s rare that you see a Lancia on US roads, let alone a Beta. Less than 3,000 of these Zagatos were ever brought to these shores and fewer still are on the road. This red targa offers the chance to amaze and astound at your next Italian car meet up or car show. If the mechanical issues are not too involved, $5,000 to $7,000 would be a realistic range for this example.

Next up, we have the Zagato’s long-roofed sibling, the HPE, or High Performance Estate. Few automakers have had a crack at the shooting brake model over the years, but Lancia, ever daring, decided to have a go in the 1970s. Offering a bit more practicality to the Beta formula, there were fewer than 1,000 of these two-door estates brought to the US. This HPE for sale in North Carolina is a little more rough around the edges than the Zagato above, but is complete and a prime candidate for a bit of a refresh if one desires.

1977 Lancia Beta HPE in very good original condition. One of only a few survivors to be found. I have owned it for over 2 years and have really enjoyed driving it. I have owned a Coupe and a Berlinas and can say the HPE is the more desirable and fun to drive. Even today it appears stylish in design. A real eye catcher. I had the timing belt and bearing replaced as well as a new fuel pump. The engine runs very strong and does not smoke or use oil. AC is cold and transmission and clutch work flawlessly. It has less than 34000 miles and retains the original paint which needs a good buffing but is presentable as is. There are several small dings and some scratches which have been painted over poorly. Also, surface rust was removed from pillar on drivers side and repainted along with left front fender. The car has never been wrecked just some small dings. I have found no rust to speak of other than some surface spots.

Interior is original leather and looks very good. Only one small wear spot on drivers seat. The car was in storage for over 16 years thus the low miles and condition. With new paint and head liner the car would show well. It does leak around the windshield if driven in rain. I purchased it to drive and have enjoyed it. Due to medical problems I can no longer drive it without pain. If you are reading this I do not need to tell you how rare the HPE is. There were only just over 400 imported to the US. While they are rare, at $4,500, we may be close to the maximum value of an HPE in this condition. It seems this one is mechanically sound and while it wears the original paint, a respray wouldn’t hurt the appearance, along with some refreshed trim, if you could source such parts. For someone seeking Italian flair with practicality, there are few choices out there if you are stateside. With a little bit of time, effort and money, this could certainly be made into one sweet looking HPE.

1971 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona Spyder

We always want what we can't have. With only 122 produced, few people will ever have the pleasure of driving a Ferrari Daytona Spyder, much less own one. Of course, this prompted kit car manufacturers to create look alikes in droves and even encouraged some coach builders to chop the roof off hardtop Daytonas. This numbers matching 1971 Daytona for sale in Arizona is said to have been converted by known coachbuilder Richard Straman and was recently restored.

1971 Ferrari Daytona 365 GTB/4 Straman Spyder Convertible. Black Exterior with Tan Leather Interior. Hours were spent to make the car laser straight and all gaps to fit correctly. V-12 numbers matching engine that was freshly rebuilt and the MSD Ignition Boxes were added for reliability. Has large Borrani Wires that were completely redone with new Michelin XWX tires. This Ferrari was completely disassembled, cleaned, and restored. Looking under the hood and chassi of the car it simply looks new. It has the Euopean front marker lights and Amber/Red tail lights. Car was believed to have been converted by Richard Straman's Shop in 1979 to a Spyder in Costa Mesa California. This car was built in March 1971 and was delivered through Luigi Chinetti Motors of Greenwich, Connecticut USA. Spent some time in Southern California and was later for sale by Prancing Horse Collector Bob Bodin in Minneapolis, Minnesota in the early 1990's with 28,000 miles. Just completed a four year restoration in Scotsdale, Arizona. This car will be sold at Bonhams Auction Scotsdale Arizona on January 17th, 2013. Lot number is 392.

A real Daytona Spyder will set you back around $800,000 at the least, with most examples falling between $1.1 and $1.2 million. Even though this is a conversion Spyder by a well known coachbuilder, we're looking at a lesser value closer to the hardtop Daytona. It is curious this car is being advertised online as it will be offered at Bonhams at a few days, but perhaps the seller is testing the waters. Sadly, at over $1 million for a conversion Spyder, I would have to say with almost 100% certainty that it won't sell at this price.

1989 Maserati Spyder

If the Maserati 430 we featured last Saturday was a bit tame for you, then have a look at its open roofed sibling, the Spyder. Hailing from the same model year, this Biturbo with a shortened wheelbase and shared the same, troublesome biturbo V6 with its four-door counterpart. These Spyders carry a bit of a premium over the hardtop Biturbos, but are still rather affordable for enthusiasts of more modest means. This Spyder for sale in Washington State is a pretty original example and like most Biturbos, has low mileage for its age.

This Maserati is in outstanding condition and runs strong with the quick response one would expect from a European car. The paint is original and still as beautiful as the day it was new, there are small blemishes and a couple small door dings. The rims are aluminum with no curb rash. Every item from the power windows to the gages are operational. The Maserati signature clock shows no ware and works (it does however loose a bit of time). The interior is clean. The seats are a combination of leather and suede, the suede shows light wear, I have new suede from Marerati that comes with the car. The soft top fits tight but has two small rub marks that do not leak or allow light to show through. The McIntosh stereo system is fully functional and rocks. The power amp, equalizer, and CD player are in the trunk. The car is built to run and does a great job doing so. The car is just plain fun to drive and attracts attention wherever it goes.

The thing about most Biturbos with low mileage is that many spent countless hours in the shop sorting out the nettlesome mechanicals. When running right, they can be rewarding cars, but as with most Italian exotics, a moment of pleasure can equal a lifetime of pain. This Spyder is attractive because it has the 5-speed manual gearbox and is in presentable condition with original paint. You might see the odd museum quality Spyder fetch over $10,000, but if this car gets to that figure, that probably will be all she wrote.

1973 Ferrari 365 Daytona Spyder Michelotti

The Ferrari Daytona is arguably one of the most beautiful Ferraris ever produced. And with the number of gorgeous Ferraris produced throughout the company's history, this is no mean feat. Then what would prompt someone to mess with success? Well, Luigi Chinetti, founder of the North American Racing Team (NART), decided to have his hand at a rework of the Daytona Spider. The result is interesting, with squared off lines more fitting of a late 1970s or 1980s Ferrari. The reasoning behind this restyle was that this Daytona Spider was used in the movie "A Star Is Born" and was damaged during filming. For sale in Belgium, this car is being offered with no reserve. Will this Spyder be as valued as the original?

Known for creating many unique Ferraris included the coveted Spyder California, Luigi Chinetti commissioned this particularly odd rebody on an original 365 GTB/4 Daytona Spyder.

After being damaged during the filming of the movie 'A Star is Born', this Daytona Spyder was sold to Chinetti, who then had Giovanni Michelotti design a unique body for it. Despite being years out of production, the 365 was sent to Italy and recieved updated styling as well as a new interior. Upon completition, the car was given the name NART to recognize Luigi Chenetti's North American Racing Team and sent to the 1980 Turin Motor Show. Little did either party know at the time that this car would become the very last car designed by Giovanni Michelotti whos career was both long and prolific.

A standard Daytona Spider might bring anywhere between $800,000 to over $1 million based on current auction results. There were only 122 Spyders ever produced, and this car being a one off, it is a bit difficult on which to place a value. Even though it's more rare than the standard Spider, I tend to think this car might not reach the same heights in terms of value. It certainly has pedigree, I can't help but think this particular Ferrari looks a lot like the kit cars that emulated various Ferrari models over the years.

2003 Maserati Spyder GT

It's no secret that Maserati's F1 Cambiocorsa transmission requires a bit more maintenance than your usual gearbox. Every 20,000 miles or so you'll need to replace the clutch, so bank on setting aside $2,500 to $3,000 for that. Now one can begin to understand why a car that had an MSRP of over $80,000 is fetching $30,000 and below today. For those who want to avert some of the nettlesome upkeep, the Coupe GT and Spyder GT were available with a traditional 6-speed manual gearbox. Those I know who have driven one of the three pedal Maseratis have raved about them and I even met a guy who had a 6-speed Spyder that said he uses it regularly with little hassle. Have the Italians finally mastered the art of reliability in exotics, then?

Up for sale is my Maserati Spyder GT. This car is in outstanding condition inside and out. It gets looks everywhere its driven. It has no previous traces of paintwork or accidents. It comes with many factory options, some include; power windows, power locks, premium audio system, full power convertible top, heat, ac, traction control and many more! This Maserati was just taken to Maserati of Dallas for a once over for the next owner. All the fluids were topped off and its ready to go. It has a fresh oil change, Fully Synthetic Valvoline 5w40 as recommended by Ferrari. It runs and drives perfect, and the top works flawlessly.

It has a 390HP V8 engine mated to a smooth shifting 6-speed transmission. I have driven both the F1 Cambiocorsas and it doesn't even compare. The 6-speed is a completely different experience and much more fun. Also, it cost next to nothing to maintain where as the F1 costs a fortune. The seller's asking price is just about spot on for a Spyder GT with this kind of mileage. There are not many ways of getting a red drop top with a Ferrari V8 under the hood. These are tempting cars at this price, and after a friend of mine bought a used Quattroporte a few months back, it makes me think that Maserati ownership, if well considered, is more realistic than I first thought.

1971 Maserati Ghibli Spyder 4.7

It never fails. Every time I set my sights on a Maserati Ghibli, I can't help but think this is one of the most gorgeous Italian cars ever. This is especially the case if it happens to be one of the 125 Spyders ever made. These convertibles are toys for the serious collector, as they command big money these days. This Ghibli for sale in New York is a true survivor with a full history and is a rare opportunity to own one of Maserati's greats.

As we stated the last time we featured a Ghibli Spyder, these open roofed exotics tend to command anywhere between $275,000 to $350,000. Almost half a million dollars is all of the money for one of these cars. Even considering the patina and originality, I'd tend to think we might see $425,000, maybe $450,000 at the most.

1989 Maserati Spyder

By the late 1980s, Maserati was winding down operations in the US market. The Biturbo had done its damage to the reputation of the company and Maserati left the US market entirely in 1991. Before they left, however, they gave us this, the Spyder, which was the first Maserati in thirty years designed by Zagato. With a shortened wheelbase, this open roofed car was strictly a two seater. Like Biturbos, there are a decent amount of worn out Spyders hanging around on the used market, so finding a good one takes some perseverance. This automatic version in California is cosmetically sound, but could mechanical issues lurk underneath?

Up for bid is a 1989 Maserati Spyder convertible. Everything in this car is factory and original. I am selling this on behalf of the original owner, a lady in her late 70s who bought it brand-new for over $100,000 in 1989 and now does not have the ability to handle this car. Based on the service record book, the majority of miles were put on the vehicle during the first few years of ownership. The last fifteen years haven't had a lot of miles put on it. The factory service record book, factory service manual, and leather/suede factory owner's manual are included.

This car is in extremely good condition. This car has always been in the garage. The paint and interior are all original! The paint is still that bright factory Maserati red. The interior is mostly a grainy, creamy leather, with side panels in a creamy grey suede; the dash is in a light blue suede (very striking and unusual - typical Italian style!).

I have been driving the vehicle for the last few weeks to prepare it for selling as it has been garaged for a long time without being driven. I just had brand-new tires installed (including the spare). From driving the vehicle, here is what I have noticed: It's a little cold-blooded when starting it up in the morning, but the starting has been getting better and better the more the car is driven. It may need further tune-up work. The heating and a/c work, but the blower motor is going out. The speedometer sticks occasionally, but the sticking has decreased in frequency the more the car has been driven. The odomter and tripometer are working fine. All of the windows are working fine; all of the gauges seem to be working fine. The electric trunk release button and fuel door release button seem to be working fine. The car handles great and drives nice.

All in all, this car is in great shape, especially considering the year. It is a very clean, well-maintained car. With a little TLC, you will have an exceptional car. You'll be hard-pressed to find one as clean as this.

The one thing that alarms me about this car is that it sat for quite some time without being driven. Cars like these need to stretch their legs and be given an Italian tune up, from time to time. With that said, the seller has made an effort to be as honest as possible. The most you may see one of these later model Spyders go for would be around $15,000. With a no reserve auction, we'll probably see a car like this crest just a bit over $10,000, as I suspect the automatic transmission may hold it back a bit.

1971 Maserati Ghibli Spyder

One could consider it a miracle that Maserati is still in business to this day. A multitude of owners and mergers left the company struggling by the late 1980s. Then, Fiat came along in 1993, when the automotive giant sold 50% of its interest to Ferrari. Now partnered with Alfa Romeo, Maserati is enjoying strong sales despite a global economic downturn. One of the shining moments in Maserati history was the Ghibli, a handsome grand touring coupe introduced when the company was owned by the Orsi family and ceased production after the Citroën takeover. A Spyder version of the Ghibli was introduced in 1969, but only 125 of these gorgeous drop tops were ever produced. Subsequently, surviving examples command big prices, such as this concours example for sale in California.

1971 Maserati Ghibli Spyder 4.7

Absolutely stunning and superb example of a 4.7, 5-speed powersteering equipt Ghibli Spyder one of 125 built. AM115 1209. This car was in the Boston Museum of Art prior to receiving a complete, no expense spared restoration of more than $180,000. Numerous recent 1st place awards as the car was finished in August 2010. Everything is new or rebuilt and is likely the finest example available. Dark Blu Notte with Cashmere leather and matching wool carpeting dark blue canvas top. At almost half a million dollars, this is certainly one of the more valuable classic Maseratis. Even Spyders in rough shape can bring upwards of $200,000, so a no expense spared restoration such as this vehicle is worth the extra coin, as parts for such a rare vehicle can be daunting and expensive to source.

1970 Maserati Ghibli Spyder 4.7

While we featured a Maserati Ghibli a few days ago on CICFS, it was the more common hardtop variant. Out of the 1,274 Ghiblis ever produced, only 125 had their roofs chopped off beginning with the 1969 model year. This example for sale in The Netherlands is one of the original 125 produced and has had three owners. It has benefitted from a restoration but retains its original interior.

1970 Maserati Ghibli Spyder 4.7

This is a rare and original Maserati Ghibli Spyder, chassis number 1161st (an example of only 125 cars produced). This car has had three owners and has been driven 41,000 original miles. A few years ago, the car was completely restored and technically gone over. The car has the original engine (matching numbers) and Borrani chrome wire wheels. The bodywork is immaculate, mechanically it is 100% and drives fabulous. The interior is completely original and in beautiful condition. In summary, a unique and rare vehicle in beautiful condition.

Hardtop Ghiblis in good nick usually hover around the $100,000 mark, but the Spyder is an altogether different proposition. This is one of the nicest Ghiblis I’ve seen on the market as of late, and its price reflects that. I’m not certain how fast this car will move at over $400,000 USD, as recent auctions have set the bar for the Ghibli Spyder around $275,000 to $350,000. Even though some hardtops were converted to Spyders over the years, as in most cases, the originals will always command more money than the copies. In this stunning shade of blue, this Ghibli is a triumph of Italian design and engineering in one arrested package.
