There's got to be a joke out there somewhere dealing with low mileage Alfa Romeos. I mean, if they're not running it must be pretty easy to keep the miles in check, right? But of course, at this point in the game you're not likely to be looking at a nearly 40 year old Alfa Romeo as your primary transport, so dependability probably isn't high on your list. What may be, though, is that the pre-GTV6 4-cylinders are attractive, light, reasonably practical, fun, and above all, inexpensive when compared to some other classic Italian cars. This car certainly ticks the right boxes - it's original minus the refreshed paint, is claimed to be rust-free, has some recent maintenance performed and low miles. There aren't too many 1970s era bright red Italian cars that you can jump into in this condition for a reasonable amount, but this is sure one. With a "Buy It Now" price of only $11,500, this car is priced aggressive considering the GTV market has been on the rise recently. To me, this is a car that can be bought on a very modest budget, enjoyed on the weekends and occasional show, and will appreciate if kept in good condition, all while bring you smiles and stories along the way. Isn't that what Alfa Romeo ownership is supposed to be about?

1995 Alfa Romeo GTV

Just the other day I wrote up an Alfa Romeo 33, wondering aloud how and why such a car would have been chosen to import to the United States. Today we have another rarity on U.S. shores, but this time the candidate makes significantly more sense to me. The name "GTV" is legendary to Alfa fans, and in some ways you could argue that the 916 series GTV wasn't deserving of the name - it was, after all, a front wheel drive car. But discount that, and the GTV was a striking design that really stood apart from its contemporaries, combining classic Alfa design elements into a new and unique car that was if nothing else stunning. The GTV was offered with many different engines, from the twin-spark 2.0 16 valve right through the awesome 24 valve 3.2 V6. Today's GTV is from early in the production run but has one of the higher grade motors then offered, the 2.0 V6 turbo:

If you want a unique Italian daily driver that won't bankrupt you, has modern conveniences and a bit of sport, but will turn heads no matter where you go, this is probably the best way to do it. Unlike the quite overpriced Alfa 33 I wrote up, bidding on this GTV is quite low so far - hovering around the $6,000 mark as of writing. For that amount, I can't imagine buying more style for your dollar. Will it be absolutely reliable? Come now, it's an Alfa....but if you can discount that you'll be fixing it from time to time this car looks like a steal to me. I'd want to make sure all of the U.S. paperwork was properly sorted before purchasing but otherwise can't see any drawbacks. Sort some of the later GTV alloys and do a bit of detailing, and this car is a show stopper.

1973 Alfa Romeo GTV 2000

There's something very special and very right about the styling on the 105/115 GTV; it's just a proper looking car, no matter if it's in stock configuration or modified with huge arches. The overhangs are just right, the proportion of glass to roofline works, the fenders have lovely compound curves, the chrome is just so; it's a fine looking automobile from a period when there were a lot of forgettable automobiles in general. Because of this, it's also been a traditionally popular model for modifications - some look great, and others so so. The other day I wrote up an updated GTV 1750; it kept the original style while adding a touch of modernity with an updated drivetrain. Today's example is a little more wild - turned up a few notches and rest-modded, what it lacks in originality it's made up in charisma:

1973 ALFA ROMEO GTV 2000

Up for auction is a 1973 Alfa Romeo GTV 2000, rust free, accident free, California car with clean title.
This GTV has a recent cosmetic restoration, and extensive performance tuning in the recent years of 13 years of ownership.

COSMETICS - The Alfa has been repainted in Rosso Corsa Red within the last 3 months. Before the repaint, the body was straight, but had an older paint job with peeling clear coat throughout. No body work was done, no rust issues or bubbling to repair. Brand new grill was added and painted. All trim, bumpers, and mirrors repainted gloss black as before.
Freshly powder coated 15" "Turbine" wheels on sport tires. H4 Headlights.

MECHANICS - The Alfa has just had a break job with new pads in front and back. New Carburetor mounts have recently been installed and Weber DCOE 45s have been tuned. New alternator.
Sperry Valve Works is a reputable Alfa Romeo tuner and was responsible for an extensive overhaul with their STAGE 5 package. This package is suitable for high performance street and track engines. Some of the package features includes: High performance valve job, silicon/aluminum bronze valve guides with Viton seals, performance valve springs, port & polish head and intake manifold, Euro manifold, oversized valves and seats, HP-4 Cam with 11.5mm cam lift, and more. Weber DCOE 45s, electric fuel pump, water pump, electric cooling fans, Hi-Po pistons and sleeves just to name a few of the other upgrades.
This extensive performance overhaul resulted in 165hp and 7,000rpm red line.

The suspension was upgraded with performance springs reducing height by 1 inch. Performance "Stinger" exhaust.
The clutch is good with master cylinder and slave cylinder previously replaced. The gearbox shifts well through all gears except the typical Alfa 2nd gear, which grinds a bit when shifting at high rpm.
Original spare, original jack tools are in the trunk. New battery with quick release, strapped in the trunk.

The Alfa been extensively upgraded for street performance, but is a few safety upgrades short of track competition. Thousands of dollars was spent on all the upgrades, and I have LOTS of receipts and engine built sheet to prove it. With all the performance upgrades, this GTV has lots of power with a huge power band, has a vicious exhaust note, handles very well, and is a blast to drive.

Certainly there's a lot of work that's gone into this car and it looks the part. I stared at the wheels for a while before finally recognizing the model they came from; they're Mustang GT wheels, believe it or not, without the centercaps. While I'm typically not a fan of black wheels, the combination of the Rosso Corsa with the black details really makes this GTV stand out, coupled with an upgraded suspension and more power, there's a lot to like here. However, I'd still want to inspect the car closely before purchasing; that glossy paint could easily be hiding some body work, or worse - rust. Value on these GTVs has been flat for a few years, and I'd expect this car to be valued in the $25,000 - $28,000 range. At that price, it's a great alternative to the 2002 tii crowd, and much cheaper than the car it shares some traits with in this setup - the Hakosuka GTR.

1969 Alfa Romeo GTV 1750

Though not the most prolific version of the 105/115 series coupes, the 1750 GTV shared the basic tenants that united the many versions; light weigh, great styling, and a super drivetrain. An instant classic, they managed to be as memorable as the Guiliettas they replaced, and certainly made the following chapter all the more difficult for the Alfetta. Today's example is beautiful if somewhat untraditional Vivid Verde, sporting a older restoration but also a heat transplant:

Beautiful restoration about 10 years ago returning this Bertone-bodied coupe back to its factory original green - "Vivid Verde." Parts were re-plated as necessary. All weather stripping was replaced, all glass is original. Interior was completely redone in beautiful black leather that looks - and smells - phenomenal. New carpets, new headliner, new dash board, rebuilt instruments all make the interior better than new. Note that the odometer was reset to zero when the car was rebuilt, original miles are unknown. Seatbelts are Schroth competition-style 4-point belts (http://www.schrothracing.com/competition), original belts Klippan belt are included and can be easily installed if preferred. Center console is custom made to emulate the earlier GTA-style and covered in leather as well. Transmission was rebuilt with new synchros and lightened gears by Merrit (http://www.speedquest.com/my/gearlightning/index.html) and shifts quickly and perfectly. Engine is a 2 liter motor from a 1989 Alfa Spider including the excellent Bosch fuel injection. The battery was relocated to the trunk both to accommodate the FI system and better weight distribution. The custom cold-air air intake box is made of polished stainless and covers a K&N filter. The original 1750 motor is included with the sale as well as the original dash, wheels, hub caps, springs etc. New exhaust system with GTA end pipe was installed at that time as well. Koni adjustable shocks and Performance springs all around. Radiator was rebuilt. Brakes have been changed to a single brake booster arrangement. Car is pictured with "daily" floor mats that protect the perfect carpet, show-condition floor mats with the Alfa logo are included. Windshield washer pump is not installed but it is included.

This is a ten-year-old restoration and the car has a few minor imperfections, but it has been garage kept and very well cared for. It shows very, vey well. There are few minor scratches on the rims and the windshield. There is a small crack in the paint next to the driver's door handle as shown in the photos. It has been shown at Concorso Italiano in Monterey for many years. It starts instantly, runs excellent, drives like only a well-sorted Alfa can. Steering is precise and brakes are excellent. Tires will need replacing soon.

Personally, I'm a fan of the build; I like the updated engine package in the classically designed coupe. I did a very similar swap in my Audi GT, updating the engine for a more headache-free running condition. It worked while simultaneously making the car a better performer; my guess is this package is quite similar. Value has been a little flat on these GTVs over the past few years, but still a top condition 1969 would set you back around $50,000. This car loses some of that value with the older restoration and heart swap, but I'd estimate at $28,000 to $32,000 this car would be well bought.

Just because it's a rare Italian car that's fun to drive doesn't mean that it has to break the budget; the Alfa Romeo GTV has long been one of the best options if you want a good looking, great handling and practical (well, by Italian standards) GT car. Capable of carrying four in comfort, the Alfa Romeo GT is a good looking GT that has always reminded me a little of a Italian combination of the Audi GT and Volkswagen GTi - that may sound unflattering, but park a GTV and Audi GT together and you'll recognize a lot of the same lines; add in hatchback practicality and you've got quite the combination. While most people are interested in that memorable, throaty and sonorous GTV6, I like the simplicity of the earlier 4-cylinder models:

1976 ALFA ROMEO GTV COUPE

This car is shockingly clean, and lovely in unusual to see white. I love the Alfa decal on the hood, the cutout "GTV" which was later replaced by plastic, even the lack of the typical chrome badges on the rear is great to me. This is certainly one of the best GTVs I've seen recently; the seller must think so, too, since the asking price is just over double the current top condition value for a GTV. Hagerty pegs condition 1 cars just below $12,000 - while this car is certainly one of the best out there, I struggle to see how it's worth double that amount. At $25,000, there are a few other cars I'd select first, but it's lovely to see!

1974 Alfa GTV 2000 - GT Veloce - Restored & Beautiful. Here it is - one of Alfa Romeo's most beautiful cars - now appreciating rapidly and becoming collectors pieces.

The car has 55,000 miles and was professionally restored ~5 years ago. Rare Giallo Ocra (italian for "yellow-orange") over black leather interior. The paint is absolutely gorgeous and the interior is in amazing condition as well. Zero rust (see pics). Runs great with lots of power and recently had the SPICA professionally tuned. Original California Blue Plate. Awesome Campagnolo Chromodora wheels showing a nice patina. Beautiful original wooden steering wheel stamped "Alfa-Romeo."

This is an amazing drivers car, and these GTV's are known for their extraordinary handling and canyon carving. This is an original California car and all the hard stuff has already been done but here are some small things the car could use:

It has an oil leak (all 1970's Italian cars do)

The second gear grinds if you shift it at a high RPM (again a very, very common Alfa problem) - I drive with it like this and simply double-clutch going into second gear and it goes very smoothly. If this bothers you, for an extra $200 (!), I have a fresh transmission you can have with the car to fix this.

The tach bounces (see video) - I have an extra complete 1974 GTV gauge cluster that goes with the car to take care of this!

Turn signals work intermittently - I have 2GB of 1974 Alfa GTV wiring diagrams and service manuals you can have

This car was stolen in the 1980's and issued a salvage title- a time when their value was low enough that it was easier for insurance companies to simply consider them a loss than to source the expensive Italian parts. The photos speak for themselves and there are no visible signs of damage; additionally, I have gone over the entire car with a digital paint thickness gauge.

On offer at no reserve, I would suspect this GTV will fetch somewhere between $25,000 and $30,000, given the current market. There are a few issues with this car, but none that would seriously deter an enthusiast from staying away. These are very rewarding cars to own and drive and are a great entry point into the world of (somewhat) affordable Italian classics.

1973 Alfa Romeo GTV 2000

While the Alfa Romeo Spider could be considered one of the most popular Italian collector vehicles in the US, not everyone is a convertible fan. What to do, then? How about that car’s sibling, the GTV? Introduced in 1963, this coupe lived a long live up through the late 1970s and was a popular alternative stateside to the car that made BMW’s bones, the 2002. This particular GTV is rather special, as it was owned by our reader George who has been a long time owner of Alfa Romeos in addition to being a sales agent at Mediterranean Motors, back when Alfa sold cars in this market. It is a fully documented car and is sure make for a great motoring companion for the next owner.

1973 2000 GTV Gorgeous ALFA, All original with no body modifications and no rust and no accident history. Always garaged with a car cover. The engine and gear box rebuilt with 15k miles. Approximately 9 years ago the car was taken down to bare metal and repainted with the Ferrari Yellow paint, minor blemishes.

I have history of the car with all the work that was done in very detailed documents from mechanics of a Lamborghini dealer. It drives like a GTV should drive! It's One of the Best in the US....

With the Panasport wheels and yellow paintwork, this GTV does a great deal to stand out from the crowd, as you usually see these painted in red, silver, or various shades of blue. With the bumpers removed it also loses a bit of weight and lends a bit of a club sport feel to it. The seller has priced this GTV rather attractively, as late model examples in good condition can run you north of $30,000. The predecessor to the GTV6 we featured yesterday, the 105/115 series GTV coupes are a perennial favorite amongst Alfisti, noted for their graceful Bertone styling and lively driving dynamics. To this day, these cars have a look about them that combines the best of modern and classic styling and can be run fairly easily on a budget, as they have a strong enthusiast backing. This GTV for sale in Texas has been recently restored and is ready to be enjoyed by its next owner.

You are bidding on a 1969 Alfa Romeo GTV with 85,526 actual miles. This is one of Bobcor Alfa's classic restoration projects and it is a beautiful and absolutely spectacular car. A must have for any car lovers! Beautiful 60's design (instead of the outdated 70's look)

I purchased this car from the person who did the full restoration through Bobcor Alfa. The restoration was done in Florida where the relatively clean body was disassembled, all rust repaired (without bondo), and a classic paint (Urban Green Clearcoat A04) was applied. The car was then reassembled using either new or cleanup parts. The interior was done all over from brand new parts and super clean and was left beautiful.
The engine and transmission were built by Richards Stephens. He has been building Alfa engines for 30+ years and is one of the best in the country. The engined is dialed in very nicely. The transmission was worked on as well as new brakes, suspension, clutch, donut, and almost every other part was replaced new. The previous owner who did all these repairs spent over $30,000 in making the car perfect. This is a classic beauty, you won't find many others like this.

I bought the car in 2008, and the restoration had been done a year before. The previous owner only used the car for short weekend rides and I have only put a little over 1,000 miles in it since then. It has always been kept in the garage and is polished and well cared for. The engine runs very clean and starts up nicely. Mechanically my maintenance has been done by Elite Imports in Austin, TX who specializes in Alfa's. The car has no air conditioning, you can always put an after market one but it's usually not advised.

The only addition I did to the car was to have a CD-player and speakers installed. They can be removed if you don't like the look (I've considered it myself since I'm a little bit of a purist, but again having music is nice for the weekend rides).

Some little details that need to be mentioned about the car:

1. There is a small dink on the both the driver and passenger side of the doors. This have been made from the doors opening all the way. (Pictured below)
2. There's a short scratch below the passenger side door handle. (Pictured below)
3. There is a small scratch on the trunk area. (Pictured below)

Other than these minor blemishes I have not have any problems with the car and the engine runs very smooth. The car was completely gone through from top to bottom by one of the most reputable Alfa restoration shops. Vehicle history sates salvaged but knowing Bobcor and his reputation, this did not affect the quality of the car.

This car is one of a kind:
-Engine runs great, even when cold. Once it warms up it is an incredible car. I was tempted to take it to the race track but never did. But it runs that nice.
-Tires and wheels are like new
-Handles like a dream
-Interior is beautiful with classic 60's design, instead of the outdated 70's outlook.
-Transmission shifts very nicely
-Oil pressure, water temp, etc. are right where they should be.
-Steering wheel is beautiful
-Brand new battery

Deposit and Payment:

I require a $500 deposit via Paypal within 48 hours of the end of the auction. Bidder is expected to have financing/payment ready at the end of the auction. Transportation is buyer's responsibility, but I can assist. For out-of-state people we can also use escrow.com under buyer's expense if you want an even more secure transaction (I've only used them outside of ebay in the past since ebay is itself insured).

To answer a few questions from people:

1. During the restoration it looks like the front and rear bumpers and the rear taillights were from a 1970 or 71 model. But the car is a '69 model.
2. The doors need some adjustment on the closing latch. They align perfectly, but they have to be closed hard. In specific the passenger side door sometimes I have to close it 2 or 3 times to get it to close completely.
3. I just looked at the old California registration card (not the title) and it has a line that says "PR/HIST: SALVAGED". Like I put it in the description. But the title says nothing about it, it's a clear title. Not sure what the registration means, but since it was a complete restoration for this car I don't think it matters if it was salvaged or not.
4. I will try to get more pictures from underneath. I will try to take the car to a shop and put it on the rails tomorrow or monday at the latest.

This car has a few flaws and I’d be a bit concerned about the salvage issue as described. Sometimes motor vehicle registries can be weird, but it is worth doing some research to see if there is anything to cause a potential owner to be alarmed. The asking price of $26,000 is about spot on for a good driver quality GTV, as an example like this will typically run you between $25,000 and $30,000.

Celebrity Owned: 1971 Alfa Romeo GTV 1750

Whenever I see a "celebrity car" advertised, it really doesn't do much to grab my attention. A lot of the folks in Hollywood aren't true car collectors; rather, it's all about badge and image when it comes to transportation. To be honest, I wouldn't have normally associated Tim Allen with a GTV 1750, as he's known for his love of Detroit iron. But his petrolhead credibility has just gone up a few notches in my book with this car. These coupes are revered for their excellent handling and tidy good looks. This collector Alfa Romeo GTV 1750 is currently owned by celebrity, comedian and car connoisseur, Tim Allen. Known for his Blockbuster Movies and hit television shows “Home Improvement” and “Last Man Standing!" This car has resided in his collection for the last 7 years! He has finally decided to sell this Alfa GTV, to complete someone else’s collection.

Here is a chance to own a frame off restored vehicle with a celebrity provenance. This GTV only has 3000 miles since its restoration. When Tim bought this car seven years ago, this is what was done:

“Complete restoration done by an Engineer who started with an all original and never molested original car. Every suspension bushing, joint, bearing throughout the entire car was replaced. All components cleaned and painted or powder coated prior to reassembly. All new suspension is all adjustable, centerline springs, etc. Undercarriage is rust free and was cleaned and re-undercoated. All new rubber and seals, new window felts and channels. new speckled grey carpet kit, original dash without cracks, original wood, new speedo and tach cables, entirely new european taillight assemblies, original spare with jack, AR501 red paint, new period Daytonas and Yoko 205’s, original AM/FM push button radio that works.

Original 1750 that was rebuilt with Steve Hanniford head work (stage 5 includes intake manifold port machining), assembled with all new components (valves, HP Springs, followers, retainers, reliefs, Ingram HP FI pump (165-170hp), new fuel pump, throttle bodies rebuilt, new exhaust OEM with hangers, original exhaust manifolds ceramic coated, all SS hardware for reassembly, all recip components carefully hand balanced to 0.1 gram static, revs willingly to 7000 where the cams peak), flywheel machined to 15lbs (more to relieve stress risers in casting then weight), new pistons/liners (hastings rings, effective CR 10:1, stk 9.75 plus 10 mils off the head for a quarter point), flowed oil pump (meaning the oil pump intake was carefully shaped), all new chains, Ingram prepped 1750 rods (relieved, peened, bushed, new bolts and big nuts), all engine work done at Wes Ingram’s shop, compression delta P across all cylinders is 1 pound! recurved electronic Bosch with MSD multi-spark, entire cooling system with custom 3 row core adapted to original tanks, thermostatically controlled fan. Trans, driveline and rear-end inspected and rebuilt, new windshield (all other glass original).”

GTVs of this vintage that are restored or well-kept originals have always brought strong money. A good, driver quality vehicle in decent nick will probably hover somewhere around the $25,000 to $27,000 mark, but given the level of detail on this car, I'd suspect it will probably fetch somewhere around $35,000. For someone who is into these cars, the celebrity status is just a bit of icing on the cake. I do find it interesting, however, that in the world of showbusiness, comedians tend to have the best taste in cars.

If ever there was an Italian cousin to the legendary BMW 2002, it would be this car: the Alfa Romeo GTV Coupe. These rear-drive coupes with their twin cam engines offer motorists classic Italian driving thrills in a tidy Bertone penned package. As with many desirable classics, prices have been strong for these coupes for quite some time. This GTV for sale in Colorado isn't perfect, but is offered at no reserve and looks great with the Panasport/Minilite style wheels.

Up for sale is a 1974 Alfa Romeo GTV 2000. It is blue on tan, with Mini Lite replica wheels. It has a proper European Weber conversion, factory A/C, Centerline performance springs, European spec cams, Magnaflow exhaust, stainless steel brake lines, and polyurethane bushings. One of the most beautiful cars Bertone ever designed was the GTV, and this one looks the part. I have most of the records since new. I also have the original bill of sale, from Colorado and has been here since.

It was repainted at one point in its life and it was done at a commercially acceptable standard. It is not perfect but looks good at 10 ft. There is the typical rust in the wheel wells, the bottom of the windshield frame and in the rockers. It is minor but the paint is bubbling in some spots. The interior is in decent shape. The drivers seat bolster has wear, the door panels are wavy and the dash has a cap on it. The tachometer needs to be rebuilt, it reads high. The factory A/C blows ice cold, the gearbox shifts perfectly, the engine has good compression on all cylinders, it drives like a new car, no strange noises from the suspension, very few leaks (it’s Italian), fully serviced and runs like a proper GTV should.

If you are looking for a GTV that you can drive and enjoy this is the one. It can be driven in middle of the summer with the A/C blasting and cruising in style and comfort. It can then be taken to the track and enjoyed in all of its glory with its suspension and upgraded engine. The car is not perfect so you won’t have to worry about the occasional rock chip or scratch. If you want a GTV to use as it was intended to, this is the perfect car. It is mechanically very sound and I would not hesitate to drive it across the country tomorrow.

With no reserve, this GTV will probably reach into the low $20,000 range, as there are a few issues that need to be addressed. This is still a very drivable car, though, and with no reserve, represents a potential opportunity to get a GTV at a discount. GTVs in outstanding condition can reach into the $30,000 range these days, but this one will most likely fall short of that.
