1972 Maserati Ghibli

The Ghibli has long lived in the shadows of other, more well known Italian exotica, but for those in the know, these GTs offer a little bit of understated luxury to go along with the raw power of the quad cam V8 engine. Released in 1970, the Ghibli SS offered a slightly more powerful, 4.9 liter 350 bhp V8. This Ghibli SS is on offer in Ohio and was repainted from its original yellow color to the red it wears currently.

1972 Maserati Ghibli 4.9 SS - rare 5spd Manual, USA car. Maserati Red over Black leather interior, Borrani wire wheels. Good documentation and service history is included with the car. Records show that the car was sold in 1978 by Miller Motorcars and the car was Yellow at the time. The 2nd owner had the car changed to the current red color. Otherwise the car is to our knowledge completely original - it is a matching numbers, actual mileage car. All service is up-to-date - it is fully sorted and needs nothing to go enjoy. This car includes a stack of maintenance records, the original owner's manual and wiring diagram, two sets of keys, the Maserati Classic kit including the original sales brochures, and original tool rool with a partially complete tool kit, jack, and spare tire on a Borrani wire wheel.

It's not surprising that the Ghibli SS is valued a little higher than the lesser engined Ghibli, typically $90,000 to $120,000 is about what you can expect to pay for a good example. This one seems to be a little bit overpriced, given it doesn't wear its original color and the leather seating looks a bit tired. I'd suspect somewhere closer to $100,000 might be a more realistic value.


1971 Maserati Ghibli 4.7

The 1970s were a time of transition for Maserati, both in terms of ownership and the vehicle lineup. The Ghibli was at the end of its run by the early 1970s, giving way to the Khamsin, which was introduced for 1974. The Khamsin would go on into the early 1980s, when the focus shifted from V8 sports cars to the Biturbo, a more compact sports luxury car designed to compete with some of the best Germany had to offer in the segment. Sadly, we all know how that experiment ended, which makes enthusiasts like myself more nostalgic for the time of the big, low-slung Maseratis of the 1960s and 1970s. This Ghibli for sale in Connecticut has the smaller 4.7 liter engine and is, in my opinion, Giorgetto Giugiaro in his finest hour.

Stunning black over white (tuxedo) 1971 Maserati Ghibli. The Ghibli has been touted by many motoring experts as one of the most beautiful cars ever made, and described as mechanical art in its purest form. Truly a hand built vehicle less then 1100 of these cars were made, and very few remain. The car lived in a museum in Austria for 16 years before making its way to these shores in 2006. She has clearly been been restored. The powerful, 4.7-liter V-8 engine runs beautifully, has great power and torque. She recently had more then $18,000 worth of work done by a well-known Maserati repair shop. The work included new heads and valves, full stainless exhaust system, new fuel lines and fuel pumps. We have just had the Weber carburetors tuned and she runs superbly (we have performed a full compression check). The 5-speed gearbox shifts well, all the syncros work as they should, and the clutch works properly.

The black paint is stunning; with a deep mirror finish and all panel gaps are per the factory. The floors are all original with no evidence of rust. The engine compartment has been detailed, and shows well. The outrageous WHITE interior is in wonderful condition, with a mild patina. The black carpets, and black mouse hair dash are new. The A/C blows cold and all of the controls work as they should. The braking system has been checked, they have great feel, and she stops with authority. All glass is original, and all of the seals are new and fresh.

The stainless steel trim likewise is in excellent condition as well. The chrome bumpers are in good condition. Her original wheels are in good condition, and the tires are new. This Ghibli is one of the most striking cars we have ever seen! With her tuxedo colors, she commands a crowd wherever she goes. She drives as well as she looks, and is a true investment grade car. Most expert opinions concur that these Maseratis are a great buy in the investment grade car market, and should appreciate handsomely over the next few years. Classic & Sports Car Magazine recently pitted a Ghibli SS Spyder against the Ferrari 365GTS/4 Daytona Spider and in the end, the Ghibli won the author over, not just because the Ghibli is the cheaper alternative, but because it has a refinement lacking in the Ferrari. I've always maintained that if I was a man of means, I would have a Maserati over a Ferrari, simply because it doesn't shout about your intentions. It's refined, yet aggressive at the same time.

Currently, Ghibli coupes can be had in the $75,000 to $125,000 range, depending on the provenance and whether it is an SS model. Black over white leather is certainly a classy color combination and very fitting for a car like this. If James Bond had been a paisan, this car would have been his ride.


1994 Maserati Ghibli

By 1994, the Biturbo was long gone from the US automotive landscape and most people had forgotten about this less than stellar period in Maserati's history. But in 1992, the famed Ghibli name was revived on a revised version of the Biturbo which would be sold until 1997, eventually making way for the 3200GT, which would go on to be the first Maserati sold in the US in 11 years, under the Coupe and Spyder moniker. Funny how some things come full circle, isn't it? This Ghibli is said to be one of two in Canada and is road legal there, due to their more lax 15 year importation threshold, rather than the draconian 25 year rule in the US.

1994 Maserati Ghibli

Very Rare and great condition Ghibli 2 GT for sale. Only 2 in Canada and this is one of them. This is NOT the Biturbo model but the Ghibli 2. Exterior is a very dark grey (almost black) and the interior is beige. The interior is completely leather and suede (no cloth) with a wooden steering wheel.

The radio and CD player work and the floor mats I had custom stitched to match the interior with the Maserati trident logo on them (not shown in the pictures). No cracks in the wood trimming and it still has the orginal Maserati gold Cartier clock in it which works perfectly. It also still has the original flare light/torch that came with the car for emergency purposes.

It is a 5 speed manual transmission and a 2.8 litre, bi-turbo engine putting out about 330+ horsepower. The brakes have been upgraded with new discs that were also slotted and new brake pads. It has been driven only in the summer here and is stored in the garage for the winter. The other Ghibli 2 in Canada was a 1991 model, had done about 71,000 kms and recently sold for $43,000. This is therefore a bargain considering the later model, lower kms and lower price.

I'm not sure if you could consider $35,000 a bargain for what is a thinly reskinned Biturbo, especially since more recent Coupes with the 4.2 liter V8 and 6-speed manual can be had regularly in the $25,000 to $35,000 range. This is also a car from a curious part of Maserati's history, one where the company found itself on the brink. Therefore, reliability and build quality aren't on par with the classics or modern day cars. Even though it has its shortcomings, I've always appreciated the more butch looks the Ghibli brings to the ordinary Biturbo formula. In just a few years, these will be legal to import to the US and hopefully a few more make their way to Canada in the meantime to make for a larger selection this side of the Atlantic.

It never fails. Every time I set my sights on a Maserati Ghibli, I can't help but think this is one of the most gorgeous Italian cars ever. This is especially the case if it happens to be one of the 125 Spyders ever made. These convertibles are toys for the serious collector, as they command big money these days. This Ghibli for sale in New York is a true survivor with a full history and is a rare opportunity to own one of Maserati's greats.

As we stated the last time we featured a Ghibli Spyder, these open roofed exotics tend to command anywhere between $275,000 to $350,000. Almost half a million dollars is all of the money for one of these cars. Even considering the patina and originality, I'd tend to think we might see $425,000, maybe $450,000 at the most.


1971 Maserati Ghibli Spyder

One could consider it a miracle that Maserati is still in business to this day. A multitude of owners and mergers left the company struggling by the late 1980s. Then, Fiat came along in 1993, when the automotive giant sold 50% of its interest to Ferrari. Now partnered with Alfa Romeo, Maserati is enjoying strong sales despite a global economic downturn. One of the shining moments in Maserati history was the Ghibli, a handsome grand touring coupe introduced when the company was owned by the Orsi family and ceased production after the Citroën takeover. A Spyder version of the Ghibli was introduced in 1969, but only 125 of these gorgeous drop tops were ever produced. Subsequently, surviving examples command big prices, such as this concours example for sale in California.

Absolutely stunning and superb example of a 4.7, 5-speed powersteering equipt Ghibli Spyder one of 125 built. AM115 1209. This car was in the Boston Museum of Art prior to receiving a complete, no expense spared restoration of more than $180,000. Numerous recent 1st place awards as the car was finished in August 2010. At almost half a million dollars, this is certainly one of the more valuable classic Maseratis. Even Spyders in rough shape can bring upwards of $200,000, so a no expense spared restoration such as this vehicle is worth the extra coin, as parts for such a rare vehicle can be daunting and expensive to source.


1970 Maserati Ghibli Spyder 4.7

While we featured a Maserati Ghibli a few days ago on CICFS, it was the more common hardtop variant. Out of the 1,274 Ghiblis ever produced, only 125 had their roofs chopped off beginning with the 1969 model year. This example for sale in The Netherlands is one of the original 125 produced and has had three owners. It has benefitted from a restoration but retains its original interior.

1970 Maserati Ghibli Spyder 4.7

This is a rare and original Maserati Ghibli Spyder, chassis number 1161st (an example of only 125 cars produced). This car has had three owners and has been driven 41,000 original miles. A few years ago, the car was completely restored and technically gone over. The car has the original engine (matching numbers) and Borrani chrome wire wheels. The bodywork is immaculate, mechanically it is 100% and drives fabulous. The interior is completely original and in beautiful condition. In summary, a unique and rare vehicle in beautiful condition.

Hardtop Ghiblis in good nick usually hover around the $100,000 mark, but the Spyder is an altogether different proposition. This is one of the nicest Ghiblis I’ve seen on the market as of late, and its price reflects that. I’m not certain how fast this car will move at over $400,000 USD, as recent auctions have set the bar for the Ghibli Spyder around $275,000 to $350,000. Even though some hardtops were converted to Spyders over the years, as in most cases, the originals will always command more money than the copies. In this stunning shade of blue, this Ghibli is a triumph of Italian design and engineering in one arrested package.


1972 Maserati Ghibli SS

The Maserati Ghibli is one of those grand touring cars that epitomizes everything that was great about Italian design in the 1960s and 1970s. Long, flowing lines and sumptuous details are the hallmarks of this machine. This particular Ghibli is a desirable one. Not only is it the later, higher horsepower SS model, but with the 5 speed manual, black paintwork and Borrani wire wheels, it certainly looks the part.

Designed by a young Giorgetto Giugiaro while at Carrozzeria Ghia, the Maserati Ghibli has been referred by some as the most beautiful sports/GT car of all times. Even if you do not agree with that strong of a statement, there is no denying the Ghibli is certainly a very striking and handsome car whose timeless design has aged very well. Even today, when driving a Ghibli, people stop and stare at the car's beautiful lines.

Powered by a dry sump V8 engine and fed by four Weber carbs, the Ghibli delivers the performance you would expect from an Italian exotic. Its closest competitor, and the car it is most often compared to, is the Ferrari 365 GTB4 Daytona. Both are large front engine cars. Both were for 2 people and were built in the similar years (1967 - 1973). Both were priced about the same (the Ghibli was a little more expensive) and built in similar numbers (about 1150 each). Where the cars differ is in their character. The Daytona was optimized for performance while the Ghibli towards being a “gentleman’s GT cruiser”. People that own both cars generally agree that the Ghibli is the better car for regular driving and rallies. If going around the race track is your thing, go for the Daytona. Of course there is also the matter of price, as today the Ferrari Daytona is MUCH more expensive; both to purchase and maintain.

The exterior styling of the Ghibli is equally matched by a gorgeous interior. The Ghibli all leather interior is quite spacious and can easily accommodate tall drivers. One famous Ghibli owner was basketball star Wilt Chamberlain. This particular 1972 Ghibli SS is a three owner car with only 33K miles. Sold new in Los Angeles and had always been there until I purchased the car 4 years ago from the second owner. I then sold it to its third owner. The car is currently in at my house near Atlanta, Georgia area. Has all the desirable features you normally would want on a Ghibli SS; the larger 4.9 liter engine, Borrani wire wheels, power steering, 5-speed, AC and rare quad exhaust. Ghiblis look very good in black, and this car is no exception!

The interior is very nice and mostly unmolested. It still has the original front carpets with the logoed heel pads. Luckily nobody ever installed a modern radio nor were extra speakers cut into the door panels. No signs of accidents or rust. Paint is good but not show quality. Mechanically this car is sweet! Engine was recently rebuilt by Terry Girone; who use to work for the Maserati imported in the Northeast and also was the service manager of the Atlanta Ferrari/Maserati dealer. I have owned about 15 Ghiblis and I must say this is one of the best running one I've driven. Oil pressure is great. Coolant temperature stays constant, gearbox shifts well, brakes work as expected. Engine compression is between 150 and 160 psi across all cylinders, which is excellent. Gauges, switches, lights, clock in working order. AC was recently serviced. Between the engine rebuilt, the AC work and a few other items the previous owner spent over $44,000 in the last 3 years. Receipts come with the car.

Ghiblis are great rally cars as they are comfortable for long drives and quite reliable for an exotic. Included is the original jack with bag, receipts, and factory supplied owner’s manual. The owner’s manual is the rare 4.9 liter version in English and Italian. Note: State of Alabama does not issue titles for cars build prior to 1974. Car is sold with Bill of Sale and a certified letter from Licensing Director which explains the State law.

Prices for Ghiblis tend to range anywhere between $75,000 and $120,000 these days, and the Spider variants command much more than that, given their rarity in comparison to their hardtop sibling. Given this example’s provenance, I’d say $80,000 to $90,000 is probably in the ballpark of what this owner is looking for. With the work and money invested in it, it certainly would be worth it. This is truly an honest car for the discerning collector.


1971 Maserati Ghibli SS

In the 1960s Ferrari had the Daytona. Lamborghini had the Miura. And Maserati had the Ghibli. This was the most celebrated Maserati yet, and in 1970, they turned up the heat with the Ghibli SS, bumping capacity of the quad cam V8 to 4.9 liters with horsepower increasing from 335 to 350. These are sleek cars and with the extra horsepower, few vehicles of the time could match its performance. This particular Ghibli SS is for sale by the owner of the Lamborghini Islero we featured last month, as you can see from the pictures.

1971 Maserati Ghibli SS - Eurospec, (French Market)

This is a Real Eurospec SS, the rarest and most desirable of all classic Maserati V8 GT coupes only around 100 were ever made. #2110 was a Special Order for a long time Maserati customer, the President of the Société Marseillaise de Credit, Edouard de Cazalet. The car was ordered in Black with Wild Boar Skin Interior including headliner. It features a unique full width storage bin behind the seats with straps to secure additional luggage. The odometer indicates 60,000 kilometers (37,000 miles).

When the Bank was Nationalized, de Cazalet joined the World Bank in Washington DC bringing Ghibli SS #2110 with him. It was sold to an Airline Pilot that owned the car for 17 years restoring it, including rebuilding the engine. (Photo of bare metal restoration included) In 1996 it was sold to an attorney that kept the car for 10 years until I purchased it in 2006. The car was featured in Autoweek's Escape Roads - May 21, 2010.

Includes copies of the original Factory Build Sheets and extensive records dating back over 20 years including those related to the engine rebuild. Service performed by former National Technical Director of Maserati North America (from the 70's thru early 90s) during my ownership, previous work performed by the well respected Grand Touring, Inc of Laurel, MD (now Dew Motorcars) for the previous owner.

The car is good driver quality, it is very reliable with a strong engine. I have owned 11 Maseratis and driven many more. This is without a doubt the most powerful classic GT V8 I've ever driven. I was told by the previous service shop that the engine was rebuilt during restoration by Holman Moody which is located in the home town of the previous owner. I don't have documentation to verify it. The car has 5 relatively new correct Michelin XWXs tires. Books and Tools. 1968 Lamborghini Islero in last picture is also for sale on ebay.

With its history and documentation, this Ghibli should garner its fair share of interest, as we can already see with the amount of bids. Even though it is not an original, it wears an older restoration that presents well and comes with a history that is as interesting as the company that built it.


1967 Maserati Ghibli 4.7 Coupe

Saying that Maserati has a checquered history is an understatement. Founded by the Maserati brothers Alfieri, Bindo, Carlo, Ettore, and Ernesto in 1926, the marque's ownership changed hands seven times, including a partnership with PSA Peugeot Citroën and a short receivership under the Societa di Gestioni e Partecipazioni Industriali dello Stato Italiano (State Industrial Holdings Management Agency). Now Maserati is partnered with Alfa Romeo under the Fiat umbrella. In recent years, their sales success with models such as the Quattroporte and GranTurismo have ensured their survival.

The first Ghibli could certainly be regarded as a high point in the manufacturer's timeline. Introduced in 1967 with a quad cam, 4.7 liter V8 producing 335 horsepower, it was certainly a fast car for its time, capable of 60 mph in under seven seconds. It was also available with either a five speed manual or three speed automatic transmission.

This particular Ghibli was owned by the late Italian-American tenor Enzo Stuarti, who was an avid car enthusiast.

Maserati Ghiblis show up less frequently than many other classics, but that's because there are not many of them and owners are often reluctant to let them go. The Ghibli with its 4-cam V-8 engine, quartet of downdraft Weber carburetors, superb suspension, powerful brakes and sublime Giugiaro-designed, Bertone-built coachwork is one of the greatest Italian GTs.

Originally owned by the famous opera star and car collector, Enzo Stuarti, this low mileage and meticulously documented example still retains its numbers matching 4 cam V8 with the correct Weber 40 DCNL5 carbs and the highly desirable 5-speed transmission.

The Ghibli shows well as a high quality driver. The exterior paint finish was resprayed several years ago in a very complimenting dark blue. The original Borranis were professionally restored by Dayton Wire Wheel and put on new tires less than 500 miles ago.

Its cabin presents very nicely, including the original and undamaged seats and door panels. Being an “early Ghibli” the car has the better looking, sleeker small hubbed steering wheel, more reliable Lucas signal stalk and the desirable toggle switches instead of rockers. The “mouse-fur” dash cover was replaced along with the center console, shift boot, map pockets and the front carpets. The remainder of the carpeting is original. The factory radio was professionally refurbished last year and new speakers were placed. The original electric antenna, lamps and instruments work as they should.

The car runs, sounds and performs very well, just as an Italian exotic should. A new fuel pump and filter all around were installed recently along with a thorough tuning and synchronization of the carburetors. An upgraded alternator and battery has been installed, as well as a new Pertronix Optic Ignition system (installed by the Pertronix factory) with new Pertronix coil, new plugs and new plug wires. Large puller and pusher fans help keep everything running cool.

Over $5K was spent refurbishing the A/C system, including all new hoses, fittings, etc. The compressor and new high-efficiency condenser work great, even in Texas heat. The entire braking system has also been fully sorted through. Completing the Ghibli are multiple sets of keys for ignition, doors, glove box, both gas caps and rare steering column lock - correct and original jack, jack bag, spanner wrench, shop manuals, owner’s manual and several notebooks of tech data and other useful information.

I always felt the Ghibli lent itself better to darker colors, and in this case, with the blood red leather, it looks stunning. This car has certainly been well documented and the amount of refurbishment undertaken is reassuring for collectors who might be interested in adding one of Maserati's finest to their stable.
