There must have been something in the air in 1967, because it seems that the whole world changed overnight. It was everywhere; in music, theater, social mores, political unrest, technology and, of course, automobiles. The height of the muscle car era was in swing and the Summer of Love was soon to start. Meanwhile, Alfa Romeo introduced its spectacular Duetto Spider and it was noticed by everyone who followed automobile design.
The car features a sharp, razor-like nose, glass-covered headlights, a classic scallop running down the side and a boat-like taper at the rear. It looked sleek, sexy and Italian in every way. Interiors were pure sports car, but luxurious enough to keep the driver comfortable during longer trips. Instrumentation was excellent and the overall feel of the car superb. Driving it was pure fun due to its nimbleness and ease of control.

This beautiful 1967 Alfa Romeo Duetto has been restored from the previous owner in which includes several upgrades. One of the major upgrades done was the braking, which was originally a boost ATE system. The Alfa itself is equipped with an upgraded 2000cc Engine and a fully rebuilt fuel injection system in which was professionally done by WES. The suspension has all new vinyl bushings and the exhaust system is virtually brand new.

Duettos are some of the most valuable of the 105/115 Series Spiders, and this example is no exception. The aftermarket alloy wheels may not be to everyone's taste, but I've seen Minilite style rims on Spiders before and I find the look to be rather fetching. The asking price here is right on the money, considering good Duettos are now reaching well into the $30,000 territory. At this price, you'll be getting not only a style icon but a classic that you can use without guilt.

1969 Alfa Romeo Spider Duetto

We've featured a lot of Series 4 Alfa Romeo Spiders over the past few months. I've always been a fan of how those cars combine classic looks with modern practicality. For those who want something a bit more vintage, might I suggest my other favorite Spider, the Duetto. This is where the 105/115 series story began and consequently, these are often valued higher than any other Spiders in this series. This Duetto for sale in New York certainly catches your eye with its Pine Green paintwork and Cromodora alloys.

1969 Alfa Romeo Spider finished in Verde Pino (Pine Green) with Black interior. Fitted with it's original 1750 twin overhead cam engine and upgraded with twin Weber carburetors, this Pininfarina designed Alfa is one of the most affordable timeless classics on the market. Other Alfa models have already reached the stratosphere and the Boat Tail design, available for only a few years will surely follow. This beautiful five speed example is rust free and comes with five spoke Cromodora alloy wheels, four wheel disc brakes, fresh Pirelli tires, wood steering wheel and more. For a fully detailed description, all serious inquires should be directed to Mark Starr @ 914 217-4817.

The we featured last week had a Buy It Now price of $20,000. That car had about 20,000 less miles on the clock and was in a little bit better shape. For the shrinking violet, the Verde Inglese paintwork might be a little more desirable, but at the current asking price, this car is priced a little bit high. Typically, anywhere between $13,000 to $16,000 is what a Spider Veloce of this vintage will bring.

Over the past decade, the Duetto has steadily increased in value, approaching territory normally reserved for its forebear, the Giulietta Spider. I'd suspect the reserve on this car is somewhere in the low $30k range, with the seller hoping to get around $35,000. Anything approaching $40,000 these days is reserved for the truly exceptional, concours quality Duettos.

The below post originally appeared on our site December 10, 2012:

As time progresses, new cars appear more and more similar, losing a lot of their character that made them instantly recognizable years ago. When talking about character, few manufacturers have successfully expressed emotion through design more successfully than Alfa Romeo. One of their most celebrated designs is the 105/115 Series Spider, and this is where that car got its start, with the Duetto. Impossibly beautiful, this Duetto for sale in Seattle looks stunning in blue with the two tone black and tan interior.

1968 Alfa Romeo 1300 Junior Spider Duetto

The Alfa Romeo Spider (105/115 series) is a roadster produced by the Italian manufacturer Alfa Romeo from 1966 to 1993. Widely regarded as a design classic, it remained in production for almost three decades with only minor aesthetic and mechanical changes. The three first series were assembled by Pininfarina in Grugliasco and the fourth series in San Giorgio Canavese. The last Spider was produced in April 1993, it was also the last rear wheel drive Alfa Romeo produced before Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione was introduced.

The Italian firm of Pininfarina was responsible for the design of the body; in fact, the Duetto was the last project with which founder Battista "Pinin" Farina was personally associated. Franco Martinengo was the Design Director at Pininfarina at that time. Pininfarina were also responsible for the manufacture of the vehicle's monocoque construction (designed with the relatively new principles of crumple zones incorporated into the front and rear).

A new Spider 1300 Junior, with a 1290 cc engine producing 89 hp (66 kW), was introduced in 1968. The Junior version had black-coloured lower front bumper Due to its round (or long) tail, the Series 1 Spider is sometimes known by the nickname of "Osso di Seppia" - Italian for "cuttlefish bone". This particular car was similar to the model featured in the 1967 movie The Graduate, driven by Ben(Dustin Hoffman), the character.

Our beautiful Duetto 1300 Junior has been restored with new deep blue paint, new black top and interior. The interior upholstery was wonderfully done with great fitment and all floor mats are fitted well. The rear trunk mat is in great shape as well as spare tire and jack. The car runs and drives beautifully. The brakes are solid and transmission shifts well. It has just been gone through by Italian car Master Jim Simpson. A few of the exterior trim pieces have a small ding and there are a couple of rock chips in the windshield, but failing that, this car is near concours as a driver quality car. Solid as a rock, the underside is as clean as the interior and paint. It drives as well as it looks. You will be hard pressed to find a nicer, more complete example of the hard to find Duetto.

Duettos of this caliber are typically bringing between $25,000 and $30,000 these days. If this one could be had for under $30,000, it would be well bought.

1967 Alfa Romeo Duetto Spider

The Alfa Romeo Spider will always be a favorite of ours here at CICFS, given the number of examples we've posted recently. This early Duetto is one of the best I've come across and is certainly going to make for a happy new owner.

1967 Alfa Romeo Duetto 1600 “Boat-Tail” Spider. Complete Show-Quality Restoration Recently finished. Looks and Drives Amazing. West-Coast car all it’s life. Never crashed, raced, or abused. All original sheet metal, no rust. Lots of money was spent to make this car one of the nicest examples around. This is the same model car that can be seen in the movie “The Graduate”.

This model is the last work of Battista Pininfarina and would make a great addition to any collection. This car drives Excellent. It revs up fast, and shifts great. It’s a blast to drive, and it gets alot of attention and compliments. All the gauges and lights work as they should. The ATE brakes are excellent, they do not pull or shimmy. The original 1600 engine had a complete professional rebuild by the previous owner. It runs very smoothly, no knocking, or smoking. It has excellent oil pressure. I had a Compression and Leak-down test preformed cold, and the results are as follows:

Cylinder 1: 200 pds 4%, Cylinder 2: 205 pounds 5%, Cylinder 3: 200 pounds 5%, Cylinder 4: 200 Pounds 4%. Much work has been done to this car, I will try to list it the best I can below:

The car is currently registered, and I have a clear California title. If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to email. Inspection and test-drive of the vehicle can be arranged. The car is located in Northridge, California.

This Duetto is certainly well sorted, as evidenced from such things as its undercarriage. The reserve is probably set somewhere in the high $20,000 to low $30,000 range, as that is where the best Duettos tend to exchange hands. Overall a nice example in a classic color that reminds us where the Spider love affair began as we await the next generation of open roofed Alfas.

1967 Alfa Romeo Duetto Spider

We can't get enough of Alfa Romeo Spiders here at CICFS. While perusing the ads today I came across this Duetto for sale in The Netherlands in a vibrant shade of blue set off nicely by its red leather interior. It lends a decidedly nautical theme to this classic roadster.

1967 Alfa Romeo Duetto Spider

Alfa Romeo Duetto Spider 1600 in very nice condition and in a very beautiful dark blue color. It benefited from a restoration a few years back and has a rust free body! Classic dark red interior and well kept. Chrome is in very good condition. Technically perfect and maintained!

Most Duettos I've seen this year are being offered solidly in the low to high $20,000 range. At $29,000, this is priced up there, but the quality of the work is impressive. The engine bay looks especially tidy, as well. Now, if only the Euro to Dollar exchange rate were a little more favorable....

1969 Alfa Romeo Duetto Spider

The original 105 Series Alfa Romeo Duetto Spider, known to some as the boat tail Spider, is one of the prettiest and most iconic designs to emerge from the design house of Pininfarina. This example comes to us from our reader Ping in the Los Angeles area. It has had a host of work done to it and has been used reliably on a semi-regular basis. Now all it needs is a new owner to look after it and enjoy it.

The car is in great condition and is extremely reliable (for a 43 year old car). I purchased the car in 2002 from a car collector in Wisconsin and drive it to work on average once a week, weather permitting. In the last ten years that I have owned it, the car has never been driven in the rain and has always been garaged (day and night). I don’t think it has been outside for more than an hour and a half at a time. It had 72k miles on the car when I bought it and it now has 103k. I have receipts totaling over $12k for maintenance done over the past 10 years, the major items which are listed below.

Just prior purchasing the car, the prior owner replaced both brake boosters with OEM ones (which he said he paid $600 for the pair). He also had the fuel injection pump, 2 lower ball joints, center bearing and support, 3 tie rod ends, front brake calipers, rear transmission mount bushing replaced along with other odds and ends.

Feb ’03 – I had the drive shaft u-joints replaced and the gas tank cleaned and refinished.

April ’03 – Replaced clutch master cylinder

Nov ’03 – purchased new convertible boot cover, replaced rear shocks and front and rear emblems.

Aug ’05 – Replaced heater valve membrane, replaced left and right motor mounts

Aug ’06 – replaced front brakes and rotors, replaced left tie rod end, replaced belts

Sep’ 06 – replaced battery

Oct’ 07 – New 14”x7” wheels, new tires (original 14”x5.5” wheels are included in the sale)

Nov ’07 – replaced rear proportion brake valve, rebuilt brake master cylinder, replaced front arm ball joint bushing

April ’08 – Installed new exhaust heat shield, installed new speedo cable (melted due to missing heat shield)

Oct ’08 – Rebuilt differential

May ’09 – replaced head gasket, replaced gas tank sending unit, replaced trunk cable

Jan ’10 – replaced convertible top, refinished convertible top frame

Oct ’10 – reupholstered seats

Sep ’10 – Replaced front brakes

Aug ’11 – Replaced center muffler, Tune up and oil change

The car was repainted in 1980 and still shines like new, but there a few small flaws here and there. I tried to take pics to show what I can but most of it is so minor that it does not show up in the pics. The bottom side of the hood is also pealing in a few spots. The engine compartment was not painted with the rest of the car and is some very light surface rust on the side by the battery. There is not other rust that I am aware of. Everything works on the car except for the cigarette lighter and the day/night toggle switch on the rear view mirror. The 2nd gear synchros were weak when I purchased the car but shifts smoothly if you just pause for a moment between 1st and 2nd gear. I was planning on replacing them when it got a little worse, but after a while I just got use to it.

There is a minor oil leak coming from the transmission and the car burns about a quart of motor oil every 1,500 miles (I believe this is typical of Alfas, at least all that I have owned). The car was manufactured in 1969, but due to the strike in 1969, this one was shipped to the States in spring of 1970 ad therefore titled as a 1970 model year. The only reason I am selling the car is my work recently moved and my commute is now much further. I need to keep my Chevy Tahoe for the family, but I also need to find another car that is more economical to commute in and more comfortable than the Alfa. Did I mention the Alfa does not have air conditioning or a radio?

Duettos in good shape that have been used as intended will usually trade hands in the $20,000 to $25,000 range. The very best concours examples can crest north of $30,000. Of the 105/115 Spiders, the Duettos are prized most in large part because of their design purity, versus later models that suffered from crash bumpers and fussier design details. I never thought I'd like silver so much on an early Spider, but with the simple steel wheels complimented with chrome hubcaps and a tidy black leather interior, this car cuts a clean pose. The California black plates are also a great finishing touch. Overall, a great example of an early 105 Spider that deserves another forty years of TLC.

1966 Alfa Romeo Duetto Spider

A number of Alfa Romeo Spiders have been featured on CICFS, but this is the first example of the Series I Duetto we have covered. Most famous for its role as Dustin Hoffman's ride in The Graduate, this roadster holds the distinction of being the last design of Batista Farina. Versus the later Spiders, this model is revered for its design purity, notably the boat tail rear end. This particular example for sale near Hartford, Connecticut has had the same owner for the last 32 years and has the larger 1750 engine.

1966 Alfa Romeo Duetto Spider. VIN: 660229. 111,667 Kilometers (69,360 miles)

HISTORY:

-European model. Privately imported by an American service-man.
-Same meticulous owner since 1980.
-Expertly repainted in 1997, with all trim removed, in original red.

MECHANICAL:

-Engine was replaced with a 1750cc unit
-5-speed manual gearbox
-Brakes upgraded from Dunlop to ATE all around
-No oil leaks
-Car runs and drives well
-When the car sits for extended periods of time, there is a slight hesitation when accelerating. This problem clears up when the car is being used regularly.

BODY/EXTERIOR:
-Very straight sides
-Convertible top in excellent condition
-Solid underneath
-One small rust spot on lower right rear quarter, in front of wheel well (see photos)
-All trim and brightwork is ‘driver quality.’ That is, it’s all presentable but not show quality. The door handles, in particular, are pitted and need to be re-chromed.

INTERIOR:
-Original black vinyl in great condition, showing only moderate signs of wear (see photos)
-Dash is gorgeous!

Overall, the car is a very nice, original, driver that has been sympathetically maintained by the same meticulous owner for 32 years. Pre-purchase inspections are both welcomed and encouraged.

This is not a concours ready Spider, but it appears honest and would be a good starting point for a first time Alfa Romeo buyer that might want to do some tinkering or freshening up. It would also prove an attractive buy for the enthusiast seeking a driver that they can enjoy without the guilt of devaluing an expensive restoration job. Average values for Duettos are concentrated in the mid $20,000 to low $30,000 range. I would suspect a final bid of around $15,000 to $20,000 would represent a good buy.
