A Trio of Ferrari 512TRs

The Ferrari Testarossa was the poster child for ‘80s era excesses. Few realize, however, that this wide-hipped, twelve cylinder bruiser lasted until 1995 through two model changeovers. My favorite of all of them, however, is the 512TR. Much like the 964 version of the Porsche 911, the 512TR smoothed out the classic Pininfarina formula with better integrated bumpers, updated alloy wheels and some updated interior trim and switchgear. At the request of one of our readers, Mark, let’s take a look at three different 512TRs for sale currently. First up is this red 1994 model for sale in California.

1992 Ferrari 512TR. Only 18,084 actual miles! Extremely rare Giallo Fly Yellow exterior and Nero leather interior! This 512TR is 1 of 5 yellow Testarossa's listed on the Testarossa, 512TR, 512M registry.

This rare 512TR is absolutely drop dead gorgeous! It looks and smells like new, it has been meticulously maintained and just underwent an extensive engine out service that included the change of timing belts and bearings, valve adjustment, replacement of cam seals and replacement of all fluids at 17,800 miles on September 26, 2013! The service was performed by Blackhorse Motor Sports in Los Angeles California. As you know, this service is necessary and extremely important so you can have the level of confidence when purchasing this 512TR! The engine was also meticulously detailed during the service while the engine was out of the car.

The 512TR is considered an iconic Ferrari. There are very few Ferrari models that were built that boasted a rear V12 engine! This is one of the last of those rare models. The car drives beautifully and is in exceptional condition inside and out. Upgrades include Tubi exhaust, yellow Brembo brake calipers and a state of the art sound system by Sony that includes a removable face located in the hidden dash compartment.

The brakes work perfectly and the clutch is in excellent condition. All suspension components are in perfect condition. There are no known mechanical issues. The transmission shifts smoothly, the power windows and all console switches work as they should and the heat blows warm and the A/C blows cold! The doors, trunk and engine hatch open as new with no flaws. I would not hesitate to drive this car cross country!

This 512TR is an exceptional value and prices are expected to continue rising on these iconic vehicles since the rear engine V12 Ferrari is a rare breed. Please see my feedback and bid with confidence!

If it were my coin, I’d probably snag the black 512TR. True, Rosso Corsa is the classic Ferrari hue, but a sinister looking car calls for a stealth look. In any case though, these Testarossas from the early 1990s have me pining for the days of proper gated gearboxes and flamboyant styling cues that have either been watered down or eliminated in an era of ever tightening regulation.

1993 Ferrari 512TR

We featured a Ferrari F512M last Friday and the same dealer now has that car's predecessor for sale: the 512TR. This car is slightly more used with close to 30,000 miles on the clock, but with less fussier styling and in classic Rosso Corsa, it doesn't disappoint.

Very clean 512TR. Fresh timing belt service by us. Red with tan. This is the more advanced version of the Testarossa.

I prefer the looks of the 512TR over the F512M, even if it is down a little bit of horsepower, as it pays better homage to Pininfarina's original vision for the Testarossa. You can't argue that these cars have presence, no matter how brash you think they might be. Given the mileage, the seller is a little optimistic on the pricing, as we'd probably struggle to reach six figures on a good day. Somewhere between $80,000 to $95,000 would be more realistic for this red head.

1992 Ferrari 512TR

Following on the heels of the Testarossa we featured yesterday, here's a low mileage example of its successor, the 512TR. Essentially a facelift of the original Testarossa, Pininfarina's styling tweaks brought the looks in line with the newly released 348. Along with a revised interior layout, improvements were made with regards to weight distribution and the gearbox, which featured a new single plate clutch. This 512TR for sale in Connecticut in Fly Yellow certainly isn't for your shrinking violets out there.

Model: 512 TR
Style / Body: Coupe 2D
Engine: 4.9L 12 Cyl Unleaded Gas

Values for 512TRs don't vary much from the original Testarossa. The 512TR had an MSRP of just over $200,000 when it was new and the prices we see today on these twelve cylinder brutes is about as low as they have ever been. For a mint, low mileage example such as this, we could be looking at between $65,000 to $90,000. The 512's smoother details has always made this my favorite of the Testarossa bunch, however, the yellow, well, it probably wouldn't be my first choice. Still, this is an arresting looking machine twenty years on.

1993 Ferrari 512TR

Even though the basic design lived on until 1996, the Ferrari Testarossa was an icon of the 1980s and remains one of the most recognizable Ferraris to date. In 1991, the original Testarossa underwent a facelift, and was reintroduced as the 512TR. The subtle styling tweaks and updated wheels lent a bit of refinement to this 12 cylinder brute, but kept the trademark side strakes. This bright yellow example for sale in Texas is an almost new example with an impossibly low 4,300 miles on the clock.

Bid with full confidence, This is a SPECTACULAR part of automotive history that has been stored in an air conditioned building and detailed weekly. No expense was spared in the care and maintaining this beautiful Ferrari.

There are two things on this car I'm not a fan of. First is the single stripe down the center of the body. This Pininfarina design is one which does not lend itself well to any kind of alteration whatsoever. Second, this was an era where Ferraris had the motorized seatbelts, as airbags would appear shortly after this 512TR was built. At almost $120,000, this is very pricey for any sort of Testarossa, even considering the mileage. Most Testarossas and 512TRs these days are hovering around $60,000 to $90,000.

1994 Ferrari 512TR

Having grown up in the 1980s, I can state unequivocally that, along with the Lamborghini Countach and Mercedes 560SL, the Ferrari Testarossa was one of those cars that displayed to the world that you were someone. Its popularity amongst the connoisseurs and the wealthy alike is evidenced by its 12 year production run resulting in almost 10,000 units manufactured. An evolution of the Ferrari 512i BB, the BB short for Berlinetta Boxer, the Testarossa improved upon the formula, adding space, comfort and power from the horizontally opposed 12 cylinder engine.

The car received a facelift in 1991 and a name change, to 512TR. Once again, power was increased from 390 to 428 horsepower, a new Bosch engine management system was employed and the front and rear fascias were updated to bring the styling in line with the newly released 348. The final iteration of the Testarossa appeared in 1994 as the F512 M, but this car was a more awkward than its predecessors, with its exposed headlights, fussy wheels and incongruous rear tail lights. The 512TR, for me, was the ultimate expression of the Testarossa. It improved upon the original yet kept much of its character intact. Like most Ferraris, I’ve mainly seen these models in shades or red, black or yellow. Occasionally you see a color outside of the normal Ferrari spectrum, such as this 512TR in Aubergine for sale in Belgium.

1994 Ferrari 512TR

Very well maintained 512 TR, Color: Aubergine with tobacco interior, alarm, power locking, cambelts changed at 88.443 km (03/2007). Very good condition!

I have never seen this color on a 512TR before, or any other Ferrari that I can remember. While it is a tad effeminate, I think this dark hue works great with the lines of the car. It gives it a rich, bespoke look befitting such an awesome machine. At €52,000 (~ $67,500 USD) it is about in line with current Testarossa prices, however, the mileage is a tad bit higher than you usually see. Still, it looks as if it was well cared for throughout its life and the cambelt service is a welcome relief. While this is a 1994 model and not eligible for importation to the United States for another seven years, it would be a nice buy for someone on The Continent seeking a uniquely colored Ferrari.
