1985 Ferrari 400i 5-speed

The promise of a cheap Ferrari is an alluring one, especially when that Ferrari derives from some pretty special sources in the Maranello world. Take a Daytona-derived V12 and a mate it to a rear drive development of the 365 chassis, couple with a 5-speed manual and get Pininfarina to style it and it sounds like a perfect recipe. The results, though, were somewhat disappointing compared to some of the previous and subsequent offerings by the same formula; the styling was conservative and didn't capture the beauty of the 365 GTC/4 in my mind. But not judged against some of the more attractive Ferraris produced, it's still a handsome V12 coupe in its own right that - above all - is one of the few ways to get into the classic Ferrari V12 in front engine/rear drive configuration for well under $100,000 today. While most of these cars were optioned with an automatic, there are manual versions floating around and today's example is so equipped:

1985 Ferrari 400i 5 Speed (Rare) Like New!

The engine, based on the Daytona's 4,390 cc (4.39 L; 268 cu in), is a 4,823 cc (4.8 L; 294.3 cu in) V12 producing 340 HP; front mounted and driving the rear wheels. This car features the 5 Speed fully synchromesh Manual Transmission. The traditional GT car layout allowed Ferrari to fit four seats into the stylish coupé. 0-60 mph takes 7.1 seconds

This car has been Fully Serviced by noted Ferrari Specialist. It has been impeccably maintained since new. Every fluid was drained and replaced: Radiator, engine oil, transmission fluid, differential fluid. Everything works on this car as when new. It has a new stainless steel free flow exhaust. Brand new Michelin TRX tires at a cost of over $2,000. Complete inspection and any issues that were not working with the car were addressed. For example the rear self leveling system is working with a new shock placed in the rear and hydraulics fully functional. New power antenna in the rear was put in and connected to CD player. All work done at a cost of over $3,000.

I really like the look of this car - the color combination is just right, the miles aren't outrageous, service and tires are up to date, and the condition looks to be great. While this wouldn't be my first choice if I had an unlimited budget, I'd seriously consider this car in comparison to some other highly priced coupes - for example, you can get one of these cars for about the same money or less than a well-sorted BMW 3.0CS. While that may sound crazy, viewed in that light the Ferrari is a much more special car that I think will continue to appreciate as more people recognize that standing on its own, this too is a very special part of Ferrari's history.

The Ferrari 365GT4 has a bit of a reputation amongst enthusiasts and usually it’s not that good. After the massive impact the Daytona had when it came to front engined Ferrari V12s, this grand tourer was a bit forgettable especially in the wake of things to come like the Testarossa and 308/328 mid engined marvels. But how about this convertible 365GT4?

Recent eBay history:
The car was offered on eBay a few weeks ago but unfortunately the highest bidder could not perform due to "other unforeseen obligations"....... Nothing to due with the car.

One glaring omission in this ad is who carried out the conversion of this car, but I’d suspect it might have been Straman, as they lopped off a lot of roofs of luxury and sports cars during this era. A good 365GT4 of this era with the 5-speed manual gearbox will usually run you between $30,000 and $40,000. Whether you place a premium on a non-factory conversion such as this, even if it does add the charm of al fresco motoring, remains to be seen.

1983 Ferrari 400i

Ferrari has been in the business of making grand touring coupes for years, but the 400 and later 412 seem to have been relegated to the dust bin in terms of the history of the Prancing Horse. This was a car of many firsts for Ferrari, two of which were the automatic transmission and anti-lock brakes. This car also enjoyed the longest production run of any Ferrari in history, from 1976 through 1989. While not officially imported to the US, many have made their way over here throughout the years. While this one isn’t for sale in the states, it is tantalizingly close in Toronto.

1983 Ferrari 400i

Re-listed due to a rogue high bid, this 1983 Ferrari 400i is a beautifully preserved and very presentable example of Ferrari's V12 flagship GT car of the 1980's. Finished in grigio fumo over tan hides this is a superb example of one of Enzo Ferrari's most elegant and eye-catching designs. The vehicle is well maintained with good compression all around and boasts Ferrari’s classic V12 Columbo engine with its characteristically fantastic exhaust note. The car was treated to a very good respray some years ago and it still looks fresh today with only a few minor chips and dings. The interior is in excellent overall condition.

The car is complete with the original owners manuals and pouch, the complete original kidney style leather tool kit and first aid kit along with copies of the original shop and parts manuals. Car is a 1983 but is listed as a 1980 due to ebay not accepting a 5 digit VIN for vehicles made after 1981. Major service recently completed included valve adjustment, timing chain adjustment, all new belts and ignition wires, new water hoses, new fuel injectors, new fuel accumulators and fuel pump, new master cylinder, new flexible brake hoses, new front hood shocks, new water pump seal, rebuilt self leveling shocks, repacked differential and recent front end alignment.

The prior owner owned the vehicle for 26 years before I purchased the vehicle from Bobileff Motor Car in San Diego. Car was sold to me as not legal in CA due to modifications to exhaust made by previous owner. Since the pictures were taken the window tint has been removed. Reason for selling is that I have recently had the unexpected opportunity to purchase a Ferrari 365 GTC4 and cannot now accommodate both vehicles. This car is an excellent example of a rare collectable and potentially appreciating Ferrari V12.

At $22,500, this 400i seems cheap for Ferrari standards, but is actually right in line with where the market is for these large V12 coupes. Between $20,000 to $30,000 should buy you a decent runner these days with a good history, while anything above $30,000 will be the cream of the crop.

1984 Ferrari 400i

For most enthusiasts in the market for a Ferrari, the 400i and 412 are probably way down at the bottom of the want list. Even with a V12 and four seat practicality, they never made a splash here in the US, mainly because they weren't sold here new. Many of these coupes were fitted with a GM 3 speed automatic, but this example for sale in Ontario has the desirable 5-speed gearbox and looks very up to date in gray over red leather.

1984 Ferrari 400i

1984 Ferrari 400i with the rare and highly desirable 5 speed manual transmission, in the classic color combination of Grigio Ferro Metallic, with red leather interior in very good condition. There are no rips or tears in the leather, and in general the leather looks very clean and nice. The original red carpets in good condition, black dash, mostly original factory paint, very clean California car, 74,200 miles from new, fully documented history file, very strong engine, starts and runs very well, the manual transmission shifts very well, fresh TRX tires, clean Ontario title, 0-60 in 6.1 seconds, top speed 155MPH, This car is marked as both 400GT and 400i on its factory build late. It is titled under its Ferrari chassis number 50679. Its VIN number is ZFFEB07000050679. The Ebay system does not recognize the actual VIN of a 400GT, so it won't allow me to list it as a 1984. This car was imported to California from France and we have the DOT certification documents. These 400i Ferraris have been undervalued partly because most of them were automatics. The manual transmission completely transforms the car. Running it through the gears is a joy. It pulls strong and hard in every gear. It is a fabulous high speed highway cruiser, it handles very well with crisp turn-in and high cornering ability. 90 percent of the performace of a Daytona for 10 percent of the price. Half of the price of the next cheapest V12 Ferrari. Prices are rising, now is the time to invest. I invite you to please inspect this car before bidding to satisfy yourself as to its condition. It's hard to say whether 400i and 412 models are rising; they have seemed rather flat in recent years. The manual transmission certainly makes this V12 tourer more desirable for serious enthusiasts. With mileage approaching 75,000, prospective buyers should be prepared to spend about $25,000 to $35,000 for such an example with a documented history.

1983 Ferrari 400i

Having never been sold in the United States, the Ferrari 400i is a bit of a rare sight on these roads. A few made their way across the Atlantic, but in the era of the Testarossa and 308/328, these touring coupes were a bit outshone by their stablemates. They were also derided in the motoring press at times, with Jeremy Clarkson noting that it was "awful in every way." The fact that the 400i was sandwiched in Ferrari history between some great 2+2 touring coupes and the attractive, more powerful 456GT of the 1990s didn't help its cause, either. While many of these coupes had the GM sourced 3 speed automatic, this particular 400i for sale has the desirable 5-speed manual transmission.

Electrically adjustable mirrors, tinted glass, electric front windows, rear window defroster. Very beautiful and original Ferrari 400i! A manual version with a 315-hp V12. Perfect power and shifting. Equipped with a very nice beige leather interior. This is certainly one of the better examples!

This is the car that time forgot, and even 23 years since the last 412 was manufactured (the 400i's successor), collectors still have not warmed up to these cars. This fact is reflected in values, as average examples change hands in the $20,000 to $40,000 range on a regular basis. This example is on the high side, at close to $50,000. The manual gearbox and sublime color no doubt makes this car more attractive, but it seems to be a tad bit overvalued, given the mileage of 60,000. That's not particular high for an almost 30 year old car, but it is high for most Ferraris.
