1994 Alfa Romeo Spider Commemorative Edition

Alfa Romeo has had fits and starts with a return to the US market over the last few years. In 2008, the 8C Competizione was unleashed on US customers in limited numbers, giving the well-heeled an opportunity to once again bask in automotive nirvana that the brand has been known for over the years. Now with the introduction of the 4C Coupe and Spider, ownership of an Alfa Romeo is becoming ever more realistic for those of us stateside. Luckily, there have been enthusiasts who dutifully preserved classic Spiders, the car which brought Alfa Romeo fame on these shores. This Series 4 Spider for sale from our reader David is one of the rare Commemorative Editions, which marked the end for the 105/115 series Spider after an impressive three decade production run.

Number 15 of only 190 Alfa Romeo Spiders sold in the US in 1994 - the last year in the US after a 27 year production run.

The Series 4 Spider will always be a favorite of mine, as it mixes classic looks with integrated bumpers and the reliability of Bosch Motronic engine management and an electric fan. Even though this is labeled a 1994 model, Spider production ended in 1993, with this CE model being one of them to roll off the line. Given the condition and mileage of this example, the price is in the ballpark. When you consider what you pay for early 105/115 Spiders and that Alfa Romeo is set to introduce a new Spider in the near future, the collectability quotient for these roadsters is strong.

With a new Mazda Miata about to be released, it's an opportune time to take a look at one of its forebears: the Alfa Romeo Series 4 Spider. Coincidentally, Alfa Romeo is planning a new Spider based on this new fourth generation Miata. But before the days of platform sharing, we had this car we see here, the last iteration of the Series 105/115 Spider, which lasted for almost 30 years. Quite an impressive run for this modern classic. The Commemorative Edition was merely a trim package, with features such as interior wood trim and special badging to celebrate the final run of these roadsters, all of which were produced in 1993 for the 1994 model year. This example is price at the very high end of what you could expect to pay for a Series 4 Spider, with Hagerty listing a Condition 1 Spider at $31,500. Rosso Vinaccia, or wine red, is my favorite color on these Spiders, but this black on tan combination makes for a classy look. For someone wanting the look of a classic roadster with a bit of the modern convenience, there are few better cars than this one.

A Trio of Ferrari 512TRs

The Ferrari Testarossa was the poster child for ‘80s era excesses. Few realize, however, that this wide-hipped, twelve cylinder bruiser lasted until 1995 through two model changeovers. My favorite of all of them, however, is the 512TR. Much like the 964 version of the Porsche 911, the 512TR smoothed out the classic Pininfarina formula with better integrated bumpers, updated alloy wheels and some updated interior trim and switchgear. 1992 Ferrari 512TR. Only 18,084 actual miles! Extremely rare Giallo Fly Yellow exterior and Nero leather interior! This 512TR is 1 of 5 yellow Testarossa's listed on the Testarossa, 512TR, 512M registry.

This rare 512TR is absolutely drop dead gorgeous! It looks and smells like new, it has been meticulously maintained and just underwent an extensive engine out service that included the change of timing belts and bearings, valve adjustment, replacement of cam seals and replacement of all fluids at 17,800 miles on September 26, 2013! The service was performed by Blackhorse Motor Sports in Los Angeles California. As you know, this service is necessary and extremely important so you can have the level of confidence when purchasing this 512TR! The engine was also meticulously detailed during the service while the engine was out of the car.

The 512TR is considered an iconic Ferrari. There are very few Ferrari models that were built that boasted a rear V12 engine! This is one of the last of those rare models. The car drives beautifully and is in exceptional condition inside and out. Upgrades include Tubi exhaust, yellow Brembo brake calipers and a state of the art sound system by Sony that includes a removable face located in the hidden dash compartment.

The brakes work perfectly and the clutch is in excellent condition. All suspension components are in perfect condition. There are no known mechanical issues. The transmission shifts smoothly, the power windows and all console switches work as they should and the heat blows warm and the A/C blows cold! The doors, trunk and engine hatch open as new with no flaws. I would not hesitate to drive this car cross country!

You are viewing a superb example of the 1993 Ferrari 512 TR finished in Nero (solid Black) over Black leather. It has just arrived back with us from a much valued repeat-client of ours who purchased it from us in 2011. It is, as it was before, in absolutely fantastic cosmetic and mechanical condition both inside and out with everything operating as designed.

This 1993 512TR with just 16,782 miles driven from new has obviously been very well cared for in its entire twenty years and it is an absolute delight to drive. When we sold this 1993 512TR to our local Doctor client back in 2011 we performed the factory recommended services due at that time ‘by-the-book’ @15,776 miles totalling $9,941.15, pictures are shown from that time showing the engine out of the car and in our clean-room.

If it were my coin, I’d probably snag the black 512TR. True, Rosso Corsa is the classic Ferrari hue, but a sinister looking car calls for a stealth look. In any case though, these Testarossas from the early 1990s have me pining for the days of proper gated gearboxes and flamboyant styling cues that have either been watered down or eliminated in an era of ever tightening regulation.

1994 Lancia Delta HF Integrale Evo 2

As years go by, I'm always wondering what the next tasty bit of forbidden automotive fruit may be on the horizon and legal for importation to the US once it reaches 25 years old. One car that stands above the rest, for me, is the Lancia Delta Integrale. It might not appear like anything more special than a four-door econobox, but this car is a rally champion, many times over. The ultimate Integrale was the Integrale Evo 2. It featured a 2.0 liter, turbocharged engine producing 212 horsepower and 232 lb ft of torque. New alloy wheels, a Momo steering wheel and Alcantara seating helped to round off package of improvements included with the Evo 2.

This Evo 2 for sale in the United Kingdom looks sublime in its dark blue color accentuates those boxed fender flares just so, adding to the mystique of this car being wolf in sheep's clothing.

1994 Lancia Delta HF Integrale Evo 2

The Lancia Delta Integrale was and still is the hero to thousands, the Holy Grail, and a genuine slayer of giants. This is the car that buried the Audi Quattro, both in the World Rally Championship and on the open road. In 1986 it rolled out a remarkable 10 wins. There were only 11 races!

The first Evolution cars rolled of the production line at the end of 1991 and through 1992. These were to be the final homologation cars for the highly successful Lancia Rally Team. In order to improve the handling, the Evolution 1 had a wider track front and rear than its predecessors which resulted in the already boxed arches getting even wider. The front strut top mounts were also raised to generate more grip, which resulted in the need for a strut brace to control these new forces.
External changes included, a redesigned bonnet with new air slats and new grilles in the front bumper to further assist engine cooling, an adjustable roof spoiler to aid rear down force and really emphasize the cars aggressive lines, and new 5 stud alloy wheel derived from the rally cars.

The new Integrale retained the legendary four wheel drive layout, an epicyclic centre diff with torque splitter (47% to front, 53% to rear), Ferguson viscous coupling and Torsen rear differential. The 16V engine was carried forward from the earlier car and benefited from a re-map to increase power to 210 bhp. The results gave the desired improvements on the rally circuits with the new cars clocking times over 5% faster on both tarmac and gravel sections.

Presented in June 1993, the second Evolution version of the Delta HF Integrale featured an updated version of the 2-litre 16-valve turbo with a new water cooled Garrett turbocharger. A catalyst was also fitted to lower emissions but overall the power was increased to 215bhp. In order to underline the even more advanced engineering and performance of the 1993 version, the new Integrale was also given a cosmetic and functional face-lift including body coloured roof moldings, improved air intake grilles, an aluminum fuel cap and a red painted cylinder head. Inside the car got a new leather trimmed three spoke MOMO steering wheel and the standard Recaro seats were upholstered in beige Alcantara with diagonal stitching.

Like James Dean, the Integrale lived fast and died young. When Lancia turned off the life support in 1994, it too was at the height of its powers and there is no doubt nations wept.

EQUIPMENT

EXTERIOR
This Evo 2 looks stunning in its deep Lord blue glossy paint. With its muscular arches and roof spoiler it really looks every part the 80's rally champion. The bumpers have recently been repainted to eradicate any stone chips and while not 100% perfect the rest of the body is presented to a good standard. The underside of the car is very solid and well kept with no damage or corrosion.

INTERIOR
The 80's angular dashboard is awash with dials and gauges to keep the driver fully informed. Despite its reputation for slightly suspect build quality the materials feel good and it is nicely finished with matching alcantara seats, door cards and roof lining, it is also surprisingly free from annoying squeaks and rattles. The Recaro seats feel very supportive and provide an excellent driving position with the adjustable Momo steering wheel. There is some light bobbling on the bolsters of the seats but they still feel firm and supportive. None of the plastic trim is damaged, the electrics work as they should and the car still has its original Lancia over-mats.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
There is a good history file showing that the mechanics have been well maintained over the years, major work to the engine include a full rebuild at Zagato Lancia in 2008 at a cost of over £4,000. When this was done all the engine and drive belts were replaced along with a new clutch and flywheel.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
The boxed arches are filled with the correct 16" rally derived alloy wheels which have all recently been professionally refurbished to an excellent standard by Lepsons in Gillingham. The front tyres are nearly new with just under 8mm of tread and the backs are about half worn with 4-5mm.

HISTORY FILE
This Evo 2 was first registered in Italy in 1995 before being imported to the UK in 2001. While in Italy it was serviced at a Lancia dealer which is fully stamped in the original service book, there are also quite a few Italian service and parts receipts and a copy of the original registration document.

Since arriving in the UK in 2001 the car has been in the possession of the same owner. Throughout this period the car has been serviced at a couple of different Lancia specialists and all the invoices have been kept in the history file.

The car also has its original Italian owners pack with the service book, owners manual, spare key and the instruction book for the JVC tape player.

The Evo 2 is the most desirable of all Integrales, and their prices are reflective of that status. The seller is asking almost $40,000 for this car, which is certainly an eye watering sum. I'd suspect once these cars start legally trickling over to the US, considering inflation, we probably won't be too off from that figure if a clean car like this could be sourced. Like the E30 BMW M3, the Integrale Evo 2 seems to be a modern day legend that is quickly becoming a pipe dream for collectors of more modest means.

1994 Maserati Ghibli

By 1994, the Biturbo was long gone from the US automotive landscape and most people had forgotten about this less than stellar period in Maserati's history. But in 1992, the famed Ghibli name was revived on a revised version of the Biturbo which would be sold until 1997, eventually making way for the 3200GT, which would go on to be the first Maserati sold in the US in 11 years, under the Coupe and Spyder moniker. Funny how some things come full circle, isn't it? This Ghibli is said to be one of two in Canada and is road legal there, due to their more lax 15 year importation threshold, rather than the draconian 25 year rule in the US.

Very Rare and great condition Ghibli 2 GT for sale. Only 2 in Canada and this is one of them. This is NOT the Biturbo model but the Ghibli 2. Exterior is a very dark grey (almost black) and the interior is beige. The interior is completely leather and suede (no cloth) with a wooden steering wheel.

The radio and CD player work and the floor mats I had custom stitched to match the interior with the Maserati trident logo on them (not shown in the pictures). No cracks in the wood trimming and it still has the orginal Maserati gold Cartier clock in it which works perfectly. It also still has the original flare light/torch that came with the car for emergency purposes.

It is a 5 speed manual transmission and a 2.8 litre, bi-turbo engine putting out about 330+ horsepower. The brakes have been upgraded with new discs that were also slotted and new brake pads. It has been driven only in the summer here and is stored in the garage for the winter. The other Ghibli 2 in Canada was a 1991 model, had done about 71,000 kms and recently sold for $43,000. This is therefore a bargain considering the later model, lower kms and lower price.

I'm not sure if you could consider $35,000 a bargain for what is a thinly reskinned Biturbo, especially since more recent Coupes with the 4.2 liter V8 and 6-speed manual can be had regularly in the $25,000 to $35,000 range. This is also a car from a curious part of Maserati's history, one where the company found itself on the brink. Therefore, reliability and build quality aren't on par with the classics or modern day cars. Even though it has its shortcomings, I've always appreciated the more butch looks the Ghibli brings to the ordinary Biturbo formula. In just a few years, these will be legal to import to the US and hopefully a few more make their way to Canada in the meantime to make for a larger selection this side of the Atlantic.

1994 Alfa Romeo Spider Commemorative Edition

The end of the 105/115 Series Alfa Romeo Spider came in 1994. This was a rather somber occasion, not just because it marked the end of a production run spanning four decades, but Alfa Romeo's exit from the US market would come one year later. For its final year, Alfa Romeo introduced the CE, or Commemorative Edition, of which only 190 were produced. Included in the package was a special badge on the nose, CE badging on the rear, gold center caps on the wheels and burl wood interior trim. These CE Spiders don't come up for sale all too often, so this one on offer in Florida represents an opportunity to get the Spider in its ultimate form.

This is an absolutely beautiful, Alfa Romeo Spider Veloce CE, Folio Green. The car is number 164 of 190 produced for 1994 the last year Alfa Spiders were imported into the usa. These special models have serialized dash plaques, gold wheel cap centers, wood shift knobs and wood door panels. The Commemorative Edition are becoming very collectable and almost impossible to find. Just think about this, there were thousands of spiders produced every year before 1994 but only 190 the final year. I believe this is the only CE advertised for sale in the entire USA.

The rear window and top are perfect, as is the tan top boot cover. All of the accessories work, including the air conditioning. Just under 57,000 miles. Books and manuals present. Drives absolutely perfect. No shakes, rattles or anything else out of the ordinary. Paint is exceptional Interior is as nice as the exterior. Tan leather and suede seats are near perfect. All of the gauges work as they should. No warning lights. Mechanically, the car is outstanding . It starts immediately warm or cold. Valve train is quiet with no excessive ticking. Oil pressure is good. No smoking whatsoever. The car revs freely and feels good as you row through the gears. which change easily with no grinding or hang ups in any gear. All 4 wheels are unmarred and the tires have 90% tread left. Car has the original Alfa Romeo radio.

The series 4 spiders (1991-1994) are the last and arguably the best produced. If you are looking for a truly special Alfa Spider look no further this is the car that will give its new owner much joy with stunning looks, fun to drive characteristics and will surely appreciate over time. Whether you are driving through winding roads or down to the beach motoring pleasure awaits you. I also have 2 low mileage 1991 spiders for sale a red/tan and silver/tan.

Prices for good, Series 4 Spiders seem to be creeping up slowly, and the CE will certainly be a favorite of many collectors for years to come. At almost $20,000, I think we are shooting for the moon here a bit. If this car had under 40,000 miles we might edge close to that figure, but as is, we're probably somewhere around $15,000 in terms of a realistic number to place on this car.

1994 Alfa Romeo Spider Commemorative Edition

It was a momentous occasion when the sun finally set on the Alfa Romeo Duetto Spider in 1994. Almost 30 years and four generations later, suspicions arose that the proposed front-drive replacement couldn't live up to the aura of joie de vie offered by the car that was originally introduced in 1966. Recently, on the Alfa Romeo forum Alfa BB a member was desperately seeking a 1994 CE Spider, so I thought given these are somewhat rare, it might be worth featuring another one, given the warm months here in the US are in full swing. This Verde Inglese example is for sale in Florida has a low 33,000 miles on the clock.

1994 was the last year for the Duetto based Alfa Spider. In celebration of the car’s sucess, Alfa made 190 special cars called CE’s or Commemorative Editions. The CE Alfa Spyder has special badgeing, a special edition number plate, and a beautiful wood console and wood door caps. They also feature the ultra cool 15” telephone dial style wheels Our car is #178 of the 190 built. It came to us from a collector who traded it on a very special Bentley. It is in excellent condition with only minimal evidence of use. The paint and leather have been well kept after. The mechanicals are perfect with a recent valve adjustment service. Everything is working properly including the air conditioning. The car has fresh Goodyear Eagle tires. The original owner’s books accompanies the car as does a notebook of historical documents including the original window sticker and service records. The mileage shows 33,678 miles. It would be very difficult to find another Commemorative Edition Spider, finding another one like ours would be like finding a needle in a haystack.

The asking price of almost $25,000 is all the money for a Series 4 Alfa Romeo Spider. Even if you could find one with delivery miles, it would still be a steep price to pay, given that you can find nearly similar non-CE edition Spiders with similar mileage for under $15,000. To buy this particular car at this price, one would either have to be very nostalgic or out of touch with the market.

1994 Alfa Romeo Spider Commemorative Edition

In 1993, Alfa Romeo wound down production of the long lived Spider, with some of the remaining inventory being sold as 1994 models. Before parting ways with the US market in 1995, Alfa Romeo sold 190 Spiders in 1994 badged as a CE, or Commemorative Edition. The differences between a regular Spider and CE were minor, limited to burlwood interior trim, special badging front and rear, gold trimmed emblems on the alloy wheel centers and an owners kit comprised of a leather portfolio, numbered keychain, and documentation. Also, a plaque was affixed to the dashboard denoting the number in the CE series you were driving. This was a rather inexpensive way to celebrate the end of almost thirty years of Spiders, beginning with the Duetto in 1966. This CE Spider for sale outside of Philadelphia has a reasonable 51,000 miles on the clock.

This classic Italian roadster has only 51k miles. If you are familiar with these cars, you will know that they were a very successful model for Alfa, originally offered in 1966, this 1994 C.E. model is represents the pinnacle of this platform. Bosch motronic engine management, burlwood trim, dash plaque, unique leather/suede seating surfaces. This is a nice clean car, current PA state inspection, well maintained, came from a true collector/enthusiast. He is moving some cars around in his collection (30+) and this is being made available.

Although it is not pictured, the factory supplied hard top is included with the sale. Aftermarket stereo system/speakers looks to be of high quality and installation, however the head unit does not currently power on. Could be something simple, we have not looked into it. Have all keys, manuals (Including the C.E. packet) and many service records.

Given the limited difference between a Spider Veloce and a CE, there is not a lot of variance in value between the two models. The most important aspect of a 1994 Spiders is that these are the final Spiders to have been sold new stateside. Clean Spiders with under 50,000 miles can bring between $15,000 to $20,000 on a good day. This example comes with service records and appears straight and clean. The only detractor for me is the aftermarket stereo, which is inoperable. Provided the mechanicals are sorted and there are no hidden issues, one could expect this Spider to bring somewhere between $14,000 to $16,000.

This is another well maintained example, having lived most of its life in California and has benefitted from a significant amount of maintenance and repairs in the last six months. The 1994 and 1995 versions of the 164 had a horsepower increase over earlier 164s, as they switched to a V6 with 24 valves; double that of the old engine. This provided a bump from 183 horsepower to 210 (or 230 horsepower in the S version).

1994 Alfa Romeo 164 LS Automatic Transmission. 101,059 Mileage, no accidents, California car until 2009-2010 or somewhere around that time, Autocheck to reference. Located in Eden Prairie, Minnesota

Over $2,000 invested in maintenance and upkeep done on this car within the last 6 months through a reputable mechanic. Engine is in excellent running condition with no oil burning, smoking, knocking, or any other Alfa Romeo related issues. Engine pulls strongly through its full revolution range and the transmission is an excellent compliment to the power plant going through its auto/sport/winter mode perfectly. The sport mode, in particular, transforms this car from being a cruiser to throaty road ripper. Auto mode, which I usually use, is most appropriate for daily driving providing an excellent balance between drivability and fuel economy.

This car is an excellent car needing nothing but an owner. It is best to buy a car where everything works mechanically and electrically from the start, and has documentation, than to buy a cheap car and have to chase annoying problems which can be expensive. It is also in unmodified, original condition! This is a fine Italian car that you will wake up and look forward to driving. Considering that all the work has been done for you, you needn't fear driving this car back home or driving it on an everyday basis. Truly, a fine car at a reasonable price!

Note that there is a significant difference between the 1991-1993 models and the 1994-1995 models. The 91-93 models came with 12V engines whilst the 94-95 models came with 24V engines. Exterior as well as interiors have been redesigned. The newer model years also had numerous upgrades including stronger structures, suspension enhancements, improved electronics with much fewer "stepper gear" problems, and other noteworthy upgrades. Plus, the 24V engine power is always nice to have and given that the 24V engine was used well into the 166 models, it is a proven engine for a flagship car!

Mechanical work done within 6 months to last year:
-Steering rack replacement + steering bushings (Lifetime warranty comes from Jorgen Automotive but I am not sure whether that can be transferred. Paper work will be provided.)
-Oil cooler hoses replaced
-Lower radiator hose replaced
-Front brake pads/front rotors
-Repainting of sunroof, front bumper, mirrors, stone chips on hood
-Horn relay
-Headlight replacement (as filament turned brown)
-Fuel door repair which had snapped off hinges
-Complete fluid change transmission, radiator, oil, brake, PS fluid etc...
-Interior light bulbs including the foot well lights
-Timing belt done with idler bearings @ 92K
-Front Struts and Springs done @ 92K
-Tires all around done @ 92-93K
-Etc. and other maintenance such as oil changes/filter

Mechanically:
-Drives perfectly, very stable, and strong willing engine
-No engine issues, engine stays within 160-190F range
-Transmission modes work. Sport holds gears appropriately, Auto upshifts quicker, Winter starts in 2nd gear
-ANSA chrome exhaust rumbles, sounds appropriate for engine
-Engine compartment clean and well-kept

Exterior:
-Very good, no delamination on clear coat. Minor scratches. Minor door dings. Nothing large. No rust on body.
-No rust underneath undercarriage. Amazing.
-Chrome in fine condition.
-Wheels are adequate but not great as they have scratches on them and have slight discoloration. They do not exhibit any curb rash on the edges.
-Glass is excellent.

Interior:
-Leather seats perfect, never guess they were 18 years old. No rips, tears, scuffs, scratches, abrasions, discoloration, and still retains its texture, not patina in my opinion.
-Scratches/texture issues on radio cover, and ash tray. See pics. Restoration on radio cover may be done pretty easily with acetone and spray paint. I have not done it because it doesn't bother me at all because I leave it open most of the time.
-Headliner clean and in good condition.
-All electronics work. Seats lift/adjust electrically, sunroof, mirrors, gas cap, trunk, etc.
-Radio is not original. It is a tape player. It is nothing fancy but adequate. I do not have the original radio.
-Rare! The climate display works. Must be a rare survivor or has been replaced. No fading at all.
-Carpet near perfect.
-Trunk clean

This car is in great condition but please be mindful that this is a 17-18 year old vehicle and therefore, your expectations should be realistic. It is not perfect, and car does not come with a warranty from seller, implied or explicit. On the whole, Alfa Romeos have a mystique aptly described by Jeremy Clarkson on Top Gear BBC. You've really never experienced a more pure driving experience until you've owned an Alfa Romeo. The connection the driver has with the engine and steering is unlike any car I've ever owned and I am sure many would agree.

One thing that I have always admired about the 164 is the engine. Just look at it. You could put a picture of it on your living room wall and call it art. Quite possibly one of the more aesthetically pleasing powerplants of our time. With no reserve, this Alfa will most likely fetch between $4,000 to $6,000. Overall, this is a pleasing example of a tasteful Italian sports sedan.

Theme Week – Non-Italian Cars…Styled by Italians: 1994 Subaru SVX

For a Japanese car manufacturer, Subaru has been more daring than its domestic competition. Using all-wheel drive as a design hallmark, their cars have been the favorite of buyers looking for all-terrain capacity in a smaller package. Recently, with the WRX and STi, Subaru has turned into the object of desire for enthusiasts seeking rally performance for the street.

Before the Impreza STi became the darling of the rally circuit, there was the Alcyone SVX, or SVX as it was known in the United States. Giorgetto Giugiaro of ItalDesign was responsible for the SVX's space aged looks, a marked departure from the almost origami-like appearance of its predecessor, the XT Coupe. Powered by a 3.0 liter horizontally opposed six cylinder engine, all SVXs produced were mated to a four speed automatic. There was no manual transmission to which Subaru had access that could handle the six cylinder engine's power, but lately, enthusiasts have been swapping the 6 speed manual from the STi in these coupes. Here is a well cared for SVX with 74,000 miles for sale in Texas.

Gorgeous pearl white 1994 model SVX with only 74K ACTUAL miles. EXCELLENT running condition, non smoker, and riding on close to new set of tires. This is a RARE find.

In white, the SVX looks great because the color accentuates it's black roof and the odd window within a window design cue. Even by today's standards, this is a very daring styling exercise. Even if its drivetrain was rather unimpressive, you have to give Subaru credit for bringing such a wild interpretation of a grand touring coupe to market. For slightly under $7,000, this is a very affordable, practical classic which can be enjoyed all year round.
