1972 Alfa Romeo 1300GT Junior

One of my favorite Alfa Romeos of all time has to be the 105/115 Series coupes. Styled by Bertone, these cars have crisp lines that have aged well. Add in the twin cam engine, 5-speed gearbox and disc brakes on all four corners and you have a classic that can also keep up well with modern traffic. Most of the cars that made it stateside were powered by the 2.0 liter engine, but other markets got small displacement versions, like this 1300GT Junior for sale in Portugal. This example has been restored and wears a very striking combination of blue over red leather.

This car is priced almost right in the middle of what a Condition #2 and Condition #1 car go for according to Hagerty. There are plenty of 2000 GTVs out there at that price point, but maybe not as freshly restored. These sports coupes are still at a good price point for those collectors who want something a bit more special than the run of the mill Fiat but might not have a Ferrari budget. For me and many others, these coupes hit the sweet spot of the collector market.

1973 Alfa Romeo GTV 2000

There's something very special and very right about the styling on the 105/115 GTV; it's just a proper looking car, no matter if it's in stock configuration or modified with huge arches. The overhangs are just right, the proportion of glass to roofline works, the fenders have lovely compound curves, the chrome is just so; it's a fine looking automobile from a period when there were a lot of forgettable automobiles in general. Because of this, it's also been a traditionally popular model for modifications - some look great, and others so so. The other day I wrote up an updated GTV 1750; it kept the original style while adding a touch of modernity with an updated drivetrain. Today's example is a little more wild - turned up a few notches and rest-modded, what it lacks in originality it's made up in charisma:

1973 ALFA ROMEO GTV 2000

Up for auction is a 1973 Alfa Romeo GTV 2000, rust free, accident free, California car with clean title.
This GTV has a recent cosmetic restoration, and extensive performance tuning in the recent years of 13 years of ownership.

COSMETICS - The Alfa has been repainted in Rosso Corsa Red within the last 3 months. Before the repaint, the body was straight, but had an older paint job with peeling clear coat throughout. No body work was done, no rust issues or bubbling to repair. Brand new grill was added and painted. All trim, bumpers, and mirrors repainted gloss black as before.
Freshly powder coated 15" "Turbine" wheels on sport tires. H4 Headlights.

MECHANICS - The Alfa has just had a break job with new pads in front and back. New Carburetor mounts have recently been installed and Weber DCOE 45s have been tuned. New alternator.
Sperry Valve Works is a reputable Alfa Romeo tuner and was responsible for an extensive overhaul with their STAGE 5 package. This package is suitable for high performance street and track engines. Some of the package features includes: High performance valve job, silicon/aluminum bronze valve guides with Viton seals, performance valve springs, port & polish head and intake manifold, Euro manifold, oversized valves and seats, HP-4 Cam with 11.5mm cam lift, and more. Weber DCOE 45s, electric fuel pump, water pump, electric cooling fans, Hi-Po pistons and sleeves just to name a few of the other upgrades.
This extensive performance overhaul resulted in 165hp and 7,000rpm red line.

The suspension was upgraded with performance springs reducing height by 1 inch. Performance "Stinger" exhaust.
The clutch is good with master cylinder and slave cylinder previously replaced. The gearbox shifts well through all gears except the typical Alfa 2nd gear, which grinds a bit when shifting at high rpm.
Original spare, original jack tools are in the trunk. New battery with quick release, strapped in the trunk.

The Alfa been extensively upgraded for street performance, but is a few safety upgrades short of track competition. Thousands of dollars was spent on all the upgrades, and I have LOTS of receipts and engine built sheet to prove it. With all the performance upgrades, this GTV has lots of power with a huge power band, has a vicious exhaust note, handles very well, and is a blast to drive.

Certainly there's a lot of work that's gone into this car and it looks the part. I stared at the wheels for a while before finally recognizing the model they came from; they're Mustang GT wheels, believe it or not, without the centercaps. While I'm typically not a fan of black wheels, the combination of the Rosso Corsa with the black details really makes this GTV stand out, coupled with an upgraded suspension and more power, there's a lot to like here. However, I'd still want to inspect the car closely before purchasing; that glossy paint could easily be hiding some body work, or worse - rust. Value on these GTVs has been flat for a few years, and I'd expect this car to be valued in the $25,000 - $28,000 range. At that price, it's a great alternative to the 2002 tii crowd, and much cheaper than the car it shares some traits with in this setup - the Hakosuka GTR.

Earlier in the week, I wrote up a low-mileage 1991 Alfa Romeo Spider Veloce; it's one of the more affordable classic Italian Spiders you can pick up these days. If you're looking for a low mileage, pristine example, the first option is obviously better for you; however, at only 72,000 miles it's not exactly like this one has racked up an unreasonable amount of trips around the block. Condition overall appears to be nearly as good as the first example, and you get a 50% discount over the asking price of the white example. Personally, for a bit of classic Italian motoring that wasn't going to my primary transportation, I'd be willing to accept that discount. The higher miles will require more maintenance, sure, but I wouldn't be too afraid to add to the total by taking trips down by the seaside. There's a great drive along the seaside in Newport, Rhode Island called Ocean Drive; it's a winding relatively low speed road that I just see as the perfect fit for a little top down enjoyment of the seaside air - and this car fits the budget, too.

1991 Alfa Romeo Spider Veloce

Rivaling the Porsche 911 and Volkswagen Beetle for one of the longest production runs, the Alfa Romeo Spider went through a host of changes (as did the 911 and Beetle) over its nearly 30 years in production; from the classic and simple "Graduate" Duetto until the last of the run in 1993, the Spider was a classic pillar of Italian design, an underscore to the notion that Italian roadsters were front engine, rear drive cars with a manual gearbox - something that would disappear from Alfa Romeos until the 8C very recently. Of all of the Spiders, I like the original Duettos and the last of the run Spider Veloces the best. Sure, the body cladding isn't as clean as the original design, but the car looked updated and really showed how good that original design could still look in the 1990s. To me, it was the same way that the 1980s Porsche 911 Carrera channeled the cleaner original design. With modern conveniences like electric windows and air conditioning, the Spider was also updated to make it a more enjoyable car to drive when the weather was less than optimal. The Veloce was the top of the line model, with leather seating, a cloth top and 15" alloy wheels. This is one of the lower mile examples we've seen; I love the white over tan leather as a classic Alfa combination, and recent maintenance means there should be less for the new owner to do except drop the top and enjoy some classic Italian roadster smiles with a touch of modernity.

1967 Alfa Romeo Spider Duetto

When you think of the quintessential Italian roadster, more than likely one car comes to mind: the Alfa Romeo Spider. Fortunately, there four generations of the 105/115 Series Spider to choose from that span four decades. So whether you want a classic or something with a bit more modern convenience, there is certainly a Spider model for you. There must have been something in the air in 1967, because it seems that the whole world changed overnight. It was everywhere; in music, theater, social mores, political unrest, technology and, of course, automobiles. The height of the muscle car era was in swing and the Summer of Love was soon to start. Meanwhile, Alfa Romeo introduced its spectacular Duetto Spider and it was noticed by everyone who followed automobile design.
The car features a sharp, razor-like nose, glass-covered headlights, a classic scallop running down the side and a boat-like taper at the rear. It looked sleek, sexy and Italian in every way. Interiors were pure sports car, but luxurious enough to keep the driver comfortable during longer trips. Instrumentation was excellent and the overall feel of the car superb. Driving it was pure fun due to its nimbleness and ease of control.

This beautiful 1967 Alfa Romeo Duetto has been restored from the previous owner in which includes several upgrades. One of the major upgrades done was the braking, which was originally a boost ATE system. Duettos are some of the most valuable of the 105/115 Series Spiders, and this example is no exception. The aftermarket alloy wheels may not be to everyone's taste, but I've seen Minilite style rims on Spiders before and I find the look to be rather fetching. The asking price here is right on the money, considering good Duettos are now reaching well into the $30,000 territory. At this price, you'll be getting not only a style icon but a classic that you can use without guilt.

1974 Alfa GTV 2000 - GT Veloce - Restored & Beautiful. Here it is - one of Alfa Romeo's most beautiful cars - now appreciating rapidly and becoming collectors pieces.

The car has 55,000 miles and was professionally restored ~5 years ago. Rare Giallo Ocra (italian for "yellow-orange") over black leather interior. The paint is absolutely gorgeous and the interior is in amazing condition as well. Zero rust (see pics). Runs great with lots of power and recently had the SPICA professionally tuned. Original California Blue Plate. Awesome Campagnolo Chromodora wheels showing a nice patina. Beautiful original wooden steering wheel stamped "Alfa-Romeo."

This is an amazing drivers car, and these GTV's are known for their extraordinary handling and canyon carving. This is an original California car and all the hard stuff has already been done but here are some small things the car could use:

It has an oil leak (all 1970's Italian cars do)

The second gear grinds if you shift it at a high RPM (again a very, very common Alfa problem) - I drive with it like this and simply double-clutch going into second gear and it goes very smoothly. If this bothers you, for an extra $200 (!), I have a fresh transmission you can have with the car to fix this.

The tach bounces (see video) - I have an extra complete 1974 GTV gauge cluster that goes with the car to take care of this!

This car was stolen in the 1980's and issued a salvage title- a time when their value was low enough that it was easier for insurance companies to simply consider them a loss than to source the expensive Italian parts. The photos speak for themselves and there are no visible signs of damage; additionally, I have gone over the entire car with a digital paint thickness gauge.

On offer at no reserve, I would suspect this GTV will fetch somewhere between $25,000 and $30,000, given the current market. There are a few issues with this car, but none that would seriously deter an enthusiast from staying away. These are very rewarding cars to own and drive and are a great entry point into the world of (somewhat) affordable Italian classics.

1973 Alfa Romeo GTV 2000

While the Alfa Romeo Spider could be considered one of the most popular Italian collector vehicles in the US, not everyone is a convertible fan. What to do, then? How about that car’s sibling, the GTV? Introduced in 1963, this coupe lived a long live up through the late 1970s and was a popular alternative stateside to the car that made BMW’s bones, the 2002. This particular GTV is rather special, as it was owned by our reader George who has been a long time owner of Alfa Romeos in addition to being a sales agent at Mediterranean Motors, back when Alfa sold cars in this market. It is a fully documented car and is sure make for a great motoring companion for the next owner.

1973 2000 GTV Gorgeous ALFA, All original with no body modifications and no rust and no accident history. Always garaged with a car cover. The engine and gear box rebuilt with 15k miles. Approximately 9 years ago the car was taken down to bare metal and repainted with the Ferrari Yellow paint, minor blemishes.

It's One of the Best in the US....

With the Panasport wheels and yellow paintwork, this GTV does a great deal to stand out from the crowd, as you usually see these painted in red, silver, or various shades of blue. With the bumpers removed it also loses a bit of weight and lends a bit of a club sport feel to it. The seller has priced this GTV rather attractively, as late model examples in good condition can run you north of $30,000. This is a beautiful 49,250 original miles 1991 Alfa Romeo Spider Veloce that I have owned for almost 10 years. I am the third owner. I have kept this Alfa in our garage with a custom cover (included) for the entire time I have owned the car. I have replaced oil and fluids on a regular basis. The paint is original. I replaced the muffler two years ago with an ANSA exhaust system. I also replaced the trunk cable one year ago. The condition is immaculate as you can see by the pictures. High quality cloth top is absolutely like new (original) with perfect rear plastic window. Original tan Tonneau cover is perfect. Engine compartment very clean. No leaking oil, fluids, etc. There is no accident history, no dents, no dings. The AC could use some Freon. I am selling because...well, I am getting older and downsizing. This is the last car of a small collection I had (have an older 1984 Pininfarina that doesn't really count as the collection also for sale). I kept the best for last. I will add more information as I think of it.

I have added pictures via the above Picasa link (about 70 pictures). I note that the Alfa has all service books and records from the dealership and first owner. The Alfa has perfect acceleration/compression; everything is original, paint, etc...beautiful car. Oil changed every year (only about 1000 miles per year driven since I bought 10 years ago. To be clear, this Alfa compares or is better than the Alfas that sold on eBay in April for over $14K.

I just remembered that there is one item I should note: some disrespectful person broke the antenna off before I bought the car 10 years ago. I never replaced it because I don't listen to the radio or music with the top down. It is very easily replaced at International Auto Parts for about $82. It is completely accessible inside the trunk for replacement and would likely only take about 30 minutes to unscrew and re-install. See link for antenna.

It’s fairly common to find Series 4 Spiders with under 75,000 miles, as most were used as toys by those who had more than one vehicle. As we’ve seen with others like it, this one is worth around $12,000 to $15,000, probably on the lower end given that it is not the higher Veloce spec. For someone who wants a cheap and cheerful roadster but wants to avoid the hairdressers car syndrome of the Miata, there’s fewer options more attractive than this.

It might be Thursday, but now is a good time to head into the weekend featuring some drop top Italians just in time for summer. Even though it has been a cooler than usual spring here on the East Coast, I still have top down motoring on my mind. The Series 4 Alfa Romeo Spider is no stranger to CICFS and a good number were sold stateside, making them a rather accessible, practical classic for those new to the hobby. Of all the colors they painted these final Spiders, my favorite is Rosso Vinaccia, or wine red. These are rather rare to come across, but here is one with the desirable 5-speed manual transmission for sale just outside of Boston.

This is a rare factory color, low miles, rust free Alfa in excellent condition. It has been driven daily in the summer for the last 6 years.

History:
I am the third owner. It was purchased and spent most of its life in Georgia.

Condition:
All aspects of the car (except exhaust and wood gear shift knob) are original and in excellent, working condition. All gauges, devices, accessories, electrical systems and lights are intact and in proper working order with no exceptions down to the vanity mirror and map lights. The air bag warning light has been deactivated due to a typical manufacturing defect. All trim, upholstery and finishes are intact and in excellent condition. The original carpet is slightly worn to the left and rear of the pedals. The paint is original with front bumper respray and minor dent removal. Leather seats and cockpit vinyl trim are supple and uncracked. All rubber is siliconed yearly and is soft and pliable. The engine runs and idles smoothly and starts immediately. The top is perfect with clear rear window. The car drops a small amount of oil within the normal range for Alfas (never needing to be topped up outside of regular 3k mile oil changes). There is a high performance stainless exhaust with chrome tip and a slightly louder exhaust note than stock.

Care and Maintenance:
The car has always been garaged daily and taken off the road and garaged during winter. It has been carefully maintained by Alfa-exclusive mechanics in the Boston area including Accel Automotive and Glynn Motors. Major recent repairs have included new rear springs, transmission rebuild (by Paul Glynn), speedo and tach refurbishment, suspension bushings, new tires, new Stay-Fast convertible top and rear window, new motor mounts. All records are available. The car was meticulously surveyed with a 2 page report from Glynn Motors.

Operation:
Handling is accurate and the steering has no play. The ride is tight and rubbery with no sloppiness, squeaks or rattles. All transmission gears shift smoothly without scratchiness. I am told by the Alfa mechanics that, overall, the car is tighter than most other similar examples they are aware of.

With a starting bid of $14,000, there’s not a lot of room to move upward here. The best Series 4 Spiders might close in on $20,000, as it seems prices are creeping a little bit upwards. This one, with over $55,000, is still realistically worth somewhere in the $13,000 to $16,000 range.

To this day, these cars have a look about them that combines the best of modern and classic styling and can be run fairly easily on a budget, as they have a strong enthusiast backing. You are bidding on a 1969 Alfa Romeo GTV with 85,526 actual miles. This is one of Bobcor Alfa's classic restoration projects and it is a beautiful and absolutely spectacular car. A must have for any car lovers! Beautiful 60's design (instead of the outdated 70's look)

I purchased this car from the person who did the full restoration through Bobcor Alfa. The restoration was done in Florida where the relatively clean body was disassembled, all rust repaired (without bondo), and a classic paint (Urban Green Clearcoat A04) was applied. The car was then reassembled using either new or cleanup parts. The interior was done all over from brand new parts and super clean and was left beautiful.
The engine and transmission were built by Richards Stephens. He has been building Alfa engines for 30+ years and is one of the best in the country. The engined is dialed in very nicely. The transmission was worked on as well as new brakes, suspension, clutch, donut, and almost every other part was replaced new. The previous owner who did all these repairs spent over $30,000 in making the car perfect. This is a classic beauty, you won't find many others like this.

I bought the car in 2008, and the restoration had been done a year before. The previous owner only used the car for short weekend rides and I have only put a little over 1,000 miles in it since then. It has always been kept in the garage and is polished and well cared for. The engine runs very clean and starts up nicely. Mechanically my maintenance has been done by Elite Imports in Austin, TX who specializes in Alfa's. The car has no air conditioning, you can always put an after market one but it's usually not advised.

The only addition I did to the car was to have a CD-player and speakers installed. They can be removed if you don't like the look (I've considered it myself since I'm a little bit of a purist, but again having music is nice for the weekend rides).

Some little details that need to be mentioned about the car:

1. There is a small dink on the both the driver and passenger side of the doors. This have been made from the doors opening all the way. (Pictured below)
2. There's a short scratch below the passenger side door handle. (Pictured below)
3. There is a small scratch on the trunk area. (Pictured below)

Other than these minor blemishes I have not have any problems with the car and the engine runs very smooth. The car was completely gone through from top to bottom by one of the most reputable Alfa restoration shops. Vehicle history sates salvaged but knowing Bobcor and his reputation, this did not affect the quality of the car.

This car is one of a kind:
-Engine runs great, even when cold. Once it warms up it is an incredible car. I was tempted to take it to the race track but never did. But it runs that nice.
-Tires and wheels are like new
-Handles like a dream
-Interior is beautiful with classic 60's design, instead of the outdated 70's outlook.
-Transmission shifts very nicely
-Oil pressure, water temp, etc. are right where they should be.
-Steering wheel is beautiful
-Brand new battery

Deposit and Payment:

I require a $500 deposit via Paypal within 48 hours of the end of the auction. Full payment is required within 7 days of the end of the auction (unless I approve otherwise over email) in cashier's check or direct wire transfer. Bidder is expected to have financing/payment ready at the end of the auction. Transportation is buyer's responsibility, but I can assist. For out-of-state people we can also use escrow.com under buyer's expense if you want an even more secure transaction (I've only used them outside of ebay in the past since ebay is itself insured).

To answer a few questions from people:

1. During the restoration it looks like the front and rear bumpers and the rear taillights were from a 1970 or 71 model. But the car is a '69 model.
2. The doors need some adjustment on the closing latch. They align perfectly, but they have to be closed hard. In specific the passenger side door sometimes I have to close it 2 or 3 times to get it to close completely.
3. I just looked at the old California registration card (not the title) and it has a line that says "PR/HIST: SALVAGED". Like I put it in the description. But the title says nothing about it, it's a clear title. Not sure what the registration means, but since it was a complete restoration for this car I don't think it matters if it was salvaged or not.
4. I will try to get more pictures from underneath. I will try to take the car to a shop and put it on the rails tomorrow or monday at the latest.

This car has a few flaws and I’d be a bit concerned about the salvage issue as described. Sometimes motor vehicle registries can be weird, but it is worth doing some research to see if there is anything to cause a potential owner to be alarmed. The asking price of $26,000 is about spot on for a good driver quality GTV, as an example like this will typically run you between $25,000 and $30,000.
