1972 Lancia Fulvia Sport 1.3 Zagato

Its very interesting to me how each of the styling firms in Italy has distinctive features that seem to carry across their different designs. Perhaps when you first see the shape you don't immediately recognize the designer, but once you know it makes sense. Vignale and Touring had inspired if conservative designs; increasingly both Bertone and Pininfarina captured the angular market. Giugiaro's work at multiple firms carrys a signature blend of angles and curves, but one of the most distinctive in my mind are the Zagato designs. Be it an Aston Martin or an Alfa Romeo, the Zagato brand meant one thing - tight curves that pared down the shape to a bare minimum, flowing tightly around the wheel arches with minimal overhangs front and back. Some of the best known Zagato work is with the Alfa Romeos and Aston Martins of the 1960s and 1970s, but one neat car they really added a lot of character too was the already colorful Lancia Fulvia Sport:

When talking about really classic Italian designs, both the Fulvia and Zagato's work usually make the mark, and the combination here was both inspired and unique. Though certainly some aspects of the design are reminiscent of the NSU Ro80, the Fulvia Sport stands on its own as a truly neat design. This is the way to buy one; a one owner car that is in pristine condition - and the Zagato name doesn't break the bank here. Whereas an Aston will set you back the best part of a few million dollars, you can get into a similarly styled Lancia for just under $40,000. That strikes the middle ground on the Fulvia - cheaper than some of the most expensive models but about double what a condition 1 1.2 from the same year will set you back. It seems appropriate given the unique nature of the car that this should be the case, and I'd still consider $38,000 to be a reasonable asking price for such a cool car!

1986 Fiat Uno Turbo 1.3

Having gone through a series of Volkswagen GTIs and running an R53 MINI Cooper S as my daily driver, you could say I'm a fan of the hot hatchback. The Italians have made some cracking good sporty three doors over the years, but few have turned a wheel stateside. This Fiat Uno Turbo is a prime example of what we as American motorists have been deprived. The successor to the Fiat 127, the Uno ushered in a new era at Fiat and snagged the European Car of the Year award in 1984. One year later, the Uno Turbo arrived. This particular 1986 model is for sale in Hungary is in great condition and catches your eye with the red paintwork and Abarth alloys.

Fiat Uno Turbo i.e. Mk1. Very good condition! Red Carpet, red seat belts, nice original condition! A real race car! The car can easily go over 200,000 km! Does not lose oil. There are no unusual noises! Can take the best offer! Looking for diesel passenger cars around €1,000!

At around $4,800, I'd say this is a pretty good deal, considering the last Uno Turbo we featured that as in similar condition was being advertised at close to $10,000. At this price, one could feasibly take a trip to Europe, ship this hot hatch back to the US and not feel like they just wasted a ton of money on a car not inherently worth that much. I've seen Unos in person and they aren't much larger than the new Fiat 500. It would be amusing to see the expressions if you pulled up to test drive a new 500 in this.

1987 Fiat Uno Turbo 1.3

Introduced in 1983, the Fiat Uno was the replacement for the Fiat 127, the first Fiat to use a transverse, front mounted engine powering the front wheels. The Uno was quite a hit in Europe when it was launched and was awared European Car of the Year in 1984. Initially, the car was offered with three petrol engines ranging in size from 0.9 to 1.3 liters, and a diesel was offered a few months after launch. Then in 1985, the hot version arrived. With a turbocharged 1.3 liter engine, the Uno Turbo was the answer to the Volkswagen GTI, Peugeot 205 GTI and Ford Escort XR3, the latter two which were not offered for US sale. As with most hot hatchbacks of the 1980s, Uno Turbos are seldom seen and often clapped out. This example for sale near Milan has been restored and legal to import to the US, with its 1987 registration year.

1987 Fiat Uno Turbo 1.3

Buy a beautiful fully restored 1987 Fiat Uno Turbo. Interior, body, and mechanical restoration. Kept up maniacally.

At a little over $9,000 USD, this is about the maximum you'd ever see an Uno advertised more, but you'd be hard pressed to find a better one. With a little bit of logistics and added cost, this would be a fantastic piece to bring to the US and a refreshing alternative to the GTIs and rice rockets out there in the wild.
