1960 Fiat 1200 Cabriolet

To own an Italian two-seater convertible, you have to be rich, right? Not exactly. Look back to the classics and there are a wealth or drop top runabouts to choose from. One of my favorites happens to be based on Fiat's small family car, the 1200. With Pininfarina employed as the stylist, a tidy looking convertible emerged on the scene in 1959 and laid the groundwork for the classic Italian roadster look. More than a few future Fiats and Alfa Romeos took styling cues from this car. This particular 1200 Cabriolet for sale, which has been restored, comes to us from our reader Frank in Denmark.

This Fiat 1200 Spider have been totally restored in 1992, and since then it has only been driving 7,000 km. The engine have gone through a complete recondition with new piston and bearings, new bearings in gearbox, new radiator etc. The hood and all of the interior have been replaced with new. This car has only been outdoor driving in the summer, and always stored indoor in a garage. In general, this car is in outstanding condition!

The warmer months are about to begin here on the East Coast of the US and in continental Europe, so a sorted 1200 Cabriolet such as this would avert and down time and allow a prospective buyer to jump right in and cruise down to the coast.

1988 Fiat Panda 4×4 Sisley Limited Edition

If you haven't been following the automotive trend towards smaller displacement "crossover" all-wheel drive vehicles that look tough, then you'd be forgiven. Often just appearance packages, these cars charge a premium for little if any increase in performance. But the trend for these mini do-it-alls started way back in the 1980s. Toyota, Honda, Subaru and Volkswagen all got in on the budget-car-meets-off-roader trend, producing 4-wheel drive versions of their economy hatchbacks. Fiat was not to be outdone, though, producing an unlikely combination that may have also been the smallest of all; the Fiat Panda 4x4. Jacked up and looking ready to flip at the slightest hint of a turn, these Pandas were even dressed up a bit in 1987 with the "Sisley Limited Edition" model, shown here today:

The Panda 4x4 Sisley offered for auction here is probably the most accomplished and certainly the best selling utility 4x4 small car of all time. The Sisley model is the “top of the range” offering.

While the original Panda never gained the kind of cult following that similar cars such as the 2CV and VW Beetle enjoy, it nonetheless engendered strong feelings of attachment among many owners for its robustness, affordability, simplicity and flexibility.

This beautiful machine was never homologated for sale in the USA, however under USA federal law, the Mk 1 Panda is allowed entry under the “25 year” rule as a vehicle of historic interest.

The first generation Fiat Panda was introduced in 1980, and was produced until 1986, when it underwent several changes. From 1986 until 2003, it was produced with only a few changes. They are now sometimes referred to as the "old Panda".

The second generation, launched in 2003, is sometimes referred to as the "New Panda" or "Nuova Panda" (in Italian), and was the European Car of the Year in 2004.

In over 31 years Fiat has sold over 10.5 million Pandas globally, with more than 6.5 million being the first series Panda. The version of Panda that interests most comers is the 4x4 version as it offers utility and practicality and an interesting antidote to larger SUV vehicles.

All of our Fiat Pandas come directly from Southern Italy. They are Left Hand Drive and all have many less the 80,000 miles from new, each unique machine has a history and a story to tell.

They are selected for their original condition, structural and mechanical integrity and careful ownership. Italians love their Pandas and our “top spec” models are often owned from new by the same family – simply being passed from Mother to Daughter or Father to Son.

The cars are bought to England where they are given full and intrusive service and inspection. Thereafter they are detailed and offered for sale to our discerning USA clients.

Introduced in 1980, the Panda (Type 141) was designed as a modern day "peasant car": a cheap, basic, no-frills utility vehicle,that would be easy to use and maintain. It can be seen as a later approach to the same niche which the Citroën 2CV and Renault 4 were designed to serve.

The first Panda was designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro, who went on record at the time of its launch describing the Panda as "the most enchanting work of his life", while Felice Cornacchia, the chief designer on the project described himself as "proud overall of the car's architecture". In Germany, Fiat's largest export market, a less positive reaction came from Peter Glodschey, chief road tester of the influential mass-market Bild newspaper, who compared the Panda with "a shoe box", but it seemed the shoe box was considered more beautiful.[7] In several key markets the Panda's styling would continue to attract mixed reactions as the Uno followed in 1983 and the aggressively boxy look became the house style for Fiats throughout the 1980s.

Mechanically the first Pandas borrowed heavily from the Fiat parts bin. Engines and transmissions came from the Fiat 127 and, in certain territories, the air-cooled 652 cc two-cylinder powerplant from the Fiat 126. The plan for a mechanically simple car was also evident in the rear suspension, which used a dead axle suspended on leaf springs. Later versions of the car added various mechanical improvements but this spirit of robust simplicity was adhered to throughout the life of the model.

Many design features reflect the Panda's utilitarian practicality. Examples include a seven-position adjustable rear seat which could be folded flat to make an improvised bed [1], or folded into a V shape to support awkward loads, or easily and quickly removed altogether to increase the overall load space. The first Pandas also featured removable, washable seat covers, door trims and dashboard cover, and all the glass panels were flat making them cheap to produce, easy to replace and interchangeable between left and right door. Much like its earlier French counterparts the Panda could be specified with a two piece roll forward canvas roof.

The first generation Panda met with great success across Europe, polling 2nd in the 1981 European Car of the Year awards in its first full year of production (pipped to first place by the Ford Escort Mark III) and staying in production in some regions until May 2003.

The Panda 4x4 was launched in June 1983, it was powered by a 965 cc engine with 48 bhp (36 kW) derived from that in the Autobianchi A112. Known simply as the Panda 4x4, this model was the first small, transverse-engined production car to have a 4WD system. The system itself was manually selectable, with an ultra-low first gear. Under normal (on-road) conditions starting was from second, with the fifth gear having the same ratio as fourth in the normal Panda. Austrian company Steyr-Puch supplied the entire drivetrain (clutch, gearbox, power take-off, three-piece propshaft, rear axle including differential and brakes) to the plant at Termini Imerese where it was fitted to the reinforced bodyshell.

In January 1986, the Panda received a substantial overhaul and a series of significant mechanical improvements. Most of these changes resulted in the majority of parts being changed and redesigned, making many of the pre-facelift and post-facelift Panda parts incompatible between models. The 652 cc air-cooled 2-cyl engine was replaced by a 769 cc (34 bhp) water-cooled 4-cyl unit, and the 903/965cc by a 999cc (45 bhp, 50 bhp (37 kW) in the 4x4) unit. Both new engines were from Fiat's new FIRE family of 4-cylinder water-cooled powerplants with a single overhead camshaft. The rear suspension was also upgraded, the rear leaf springs being replaced by a more modern independent suspension system using a rigid rear axle (known as the 'Omega' axle) with a central mounting and coil springs. The 4x4 retained the old leaf sprung set-up, presumably to avoid having to redesign the entire 4WD system. Improvements were also made to the interior and the structure. The body was strengthened and fully galvanised on later models, virtually eliminating the earlier car's strong tendency to rust. The rear panel design was also revamped to include flared arches that mirrored those of the front wings, replacing the un-sculpted style seen on earlier models, and the doors received a slight redesign with the earlier car's quarter light windows being removed and replaced by a full width roll-down window.

The Panda 4x4 Sisley limited edition was released in 1987 this was based on the standard 4x4, but came with metallic paint, inclinometer, white painted wheels, roof rack, headlamp washers, bonnet scoop, "Sisley" badging and trim. Although originally limited to the production of only 500, in 1989 the Sisley model became a permanent model due to its popularity.

From 1996 onwards, the Panda was gradually phased out across Europe, due to tightening emissions regulations. The car remained in production in Italy until May 2003. Its total production run of 23 years makes the Panda one of Europe's longest-lived small cars.

With the end of production, the 4x4 version of the Panda came to be seen as a valuable used car: it was cheap, sturdy and useful in rural areas, while most of the other 4x4 vehicles on the market were expensive SUVs.

While the Panda will never win any beauty contests, it's none-the-less a neat and unique vehicle that would certainly draw a crowd. Assisting that would be the particularly fetching color combination of this model; the grey paint with white wheels really pops, and the box-stastic shape of the Panda is highlighted by the understated tones in such good condition. I love the canoe-strewn seat covers and it must be said that I think this is the nicest condition Fiat Panda I've ever seen. While hilariously high, there is no doubt that this car would generate a serious amount of attention at any local 'Cars and Coffee' meet. What's perhaps even a bit more hilarious is that they actually worked off road, as witnessed by the video links. Try that in your Subaru Cross-trek! Bidding is quite low and while it would cost a fair amount to get over to these shores, I really think it would be enjoyable to raise a few eyebrows driving this little gem around town.

1969 De Tomaso Mangusta

The De Tomaso Mangusta was one of those great ideas; take a big, thumping American V8, mid-mount it in a Lotus-type chassis with a ZF 5-speed, get Giorgetto Giugiaro to design the body and Viola! Instant success. And from a styling and packaging standpoint, it was a success - the Mangusta is achingly beautiful with plenty of Giugiaro's unique styling details. Most notably and memorable for most are the Gullwing doors over the engine compartment which are enough alone to spur on the dreams of countless 5 year old car designers. "Yes, everything should have Gullwing doors!" But the Mangusta was notoriously a bad handling car, with nearly 70% of the weight out back. Still, that doesn't stop us from loving to look at them:

This car is presented very well and overall looks lovely. The description probably hides some truths; this isn't a condition one car, as the nearly 100,000 miles covered would testify to. Nevertheless, it's a very clean example overall. The price, however, is well outside the realm of reasonably for a Mangusta; at $219,000, it's priced over $50,000 higher than a top condition car these days, and nearly $100,000 higher than where it likely should be. I guess we're not the only ones dreaming over this Mangusta.

1992 Ferrari 512TR

If you wanted a poster car in the 1980s, you bought a Lamroghini Countach. If you wanted one of the fastest, best driving cars in the world though, you bought the Ferrari Testarossa. A revival of the classic "red head" name, the original Testarossas were front engine racers with little to do with the flat-12, mid-engined GT road car that Ferrari produced in the 1980s. Still, the name was evocative enough to spur on sales, as was the classic shape. An evolution of the 512BBi, the Testarossa would take Ferrari all the way into the 1990s; and while by then it was a dated design eclipsed by more poster super cars, the appeal and classic design of the Testarossa still shines today. While the Countach can look almost vulgar in its excess, the Testarossa is a velvet hammer. This example is from mid-run and the first year of the "512TR":

Very hard to find. Only 32.550 miles. Very good condition. This car has always been stored indoors, the AC blows ice cold and hard even on the hottest day I can drive and keep cool. Major Service Just done 200 miles ago, New engine oil, replaced oil filter, replaced transmission oil, new replaced spark plugs, replaced new brake master cylinder with Ate brake fluid and new stainless steel brake line. Rear brake cooling hoses has been replaced and other… Wheel alignment done 1500mile before. This 512TR has Tubi sport exhaust system. I don’t have stock exhaust.all scheduled services and maintenance has been routinely done and it shows in the way this car drives and performs, as well as the aesthetic of the engine bay undercarriage and all suspension and brake parts. Replaced audio, new Boss radio video CD player with Bluetooth. Installed remote control door lock system. Installed aluminum brake and clutch and gas pedal.The books, manuals, and 3 keys. The Nero Black Ferrari paint still retains that original deep, glistening look and the interior leather still has the powdery soft feel it had when it was new. These 512TRs are arguably the best looking of the breed; I'm not a fan of the 512 M that followed, though it was faster. This one looks lovely and is rare in double black, and the Speedline Mistral three piece wheels are just awesome and a perfect fit. With plenty of recent maintenance, this is certainly a strong example to look at and should likely command in the $100,000 region. While that may seem like a lot, my guess is clean examples of these won't be getting much cheaper anytime soon!

1976 Lancia Fulvia 1.3S

There are few cars prettier, in my opinion, than the Lancia Fulvia Coupe. So delicate are the details of this car that you barely notice how small this two-door really is until you get right up on it. But beauty also lies beyond the surface in this case, with an innovative narrow angle V-4 engine, 5-speed manual gearbox and front-wheel drive that gave this car the prowess it needed to dominate on the rally circuit. Fulvias are few and far between in the US, but this one just arrived via Italy and is looking for a good home.

These Lancia Fulvias are one of the best kept secrets of the classic Italian car game. While they may not have the rear drive handling characteristics of the Alfa Romeo 105/115 GT and GTV coupes, it has similarly handsome lines and an engineering pedigree that predates the Fiat/Lancia merger. The asking price is just about right for what appears to be a very nicely kept example, as the high end for Fulvias of similar vintage tend to hover around the mid to high $20,000 range.

1968 Bizzarrini 5300 GT Strada

The other day, I wrote up an Iso A3C; a neat and fairly rare race car from the mid 1960s that marked a period where Iso and ex-Ferrari designer Bizzarrini worked together to create the beautiful and fast race car; however, shortly after the Grifo-based A3C launched its race career, Bizzarrini and Renzo Rivolta parted ways. The result was that Bizzarrini continued to build road-going versions of the A3C, now dubbed the Bizzarrini 5300 GT Strada, for a few years. While more plentiful than the A3C, they're certainly not a car you come by every day - which is why it's an extra-special treat to see one pop up on Ebay:

I have to say, it takes a large set of attachments to post such a car - likely worth close to seven figures - for sale as a no reserve auction on Ebay; my guess, though, is that if bidding doesn't go the way of the seller it will get ended early. Fully restored, this car appears to be lovely and is somewhat unusual in silver color, but there aren't many photos to document the current condition. Despite that, it's a rare car to see at all so it's certainly worth taking a look at. While probably out of the price range of anyone reading this, these cars are pretty well priced considering their history and especially when compared to similar vintage Ferraris. They're arguably as beautiful as some of their creator's other creations for the prancing horse!

1978 Alfa Romeo Alfasud Giardiniera

It's interesting how some cars come about. Most are designed by committee, others are the result of a lone group of engineers working in their spare time to create something special for enthusiasts. Others, like this Alfa Romeo Alfasud, came about by government policy. The "sud" suffix is Italian for south, the region of Italy where Alfa Romeo and partner Finmeccanica manufactured the vehicle. With a flat four engine and styling by Giorgetto Giugiaro of ItalDesign, this was one of Alfa Romeo's most successful models, with over one million examples sold including the later Sprint versions. Rarely seen in the US, this Giardiniera version gives users a bit more space with a square back. Having undergone a complete restoration, this could arguably be the best, if not only, Alfasud Giardiniera on these shores.

My first new car ever was a 1972 Alfasud 1.2 in grigio (grey) with rosso (red) Skai (Vinyl) interior. I loved it. Unfortunately my then-girlfriend destroyed it on the German Autobahn a couple of years later. Ever since, I wanted another one and moving to the USA in 1985 did not make it any easier. To complicate it even more, this time I wanted a Giardiniera, a Wagon, and it could not be red or white. After searching for many years, I succeeded and found this wagon in 2003 in Northern Italy. My friend in Germany, who owns a well known restoration shop, Klassik Garage in Bad Saulgau picked it up for me and took it to his shop for a careful evaluation.

Being an Alfa Romeo it had to have some rust and even though it was in fantastic shape for an Alfasud it did have some. Thank goodness, the rear hatch was in excellent shape, but the Sud needed fenders, rocker panels and rear quarters. By then we decided to do a COMPLETE restoration. Let me give you the details:

Body:
Stripped down to bare metal, installed OEM front fenders, remanufactured rear quarter panels and welded body panels where necessary. Complete repaint outside, partially inside and underneath in factory color "bruno cilento".

Engine:
There were a few 1.5 liter Boxer engines in the USA and before Alfa Romeo left the US market in 1995 they were converted from solid lifters to hydraulic lifters. I could never find out why these engines were here. I found my engine advertised on the Alfa Romeo BB in Florida. A gentleman wanted to use it in an ultra light plane, but never finished the installation, because unfortunately he passed away.

We shipped it to Germany, changed the timing belts, water pump, spark plugs and installed it. Right now it has about 600 miles. It has two Dellorto carburetors. Since they don't have a choke, it's very temperamental when cold. It has been sitting for a while in my storage and I noticed that the carburetors are not completely synchronized at less than half throttle. Once you open up completely, they are perfect and the car "goes like stink." The sound is perfect too. A new muffler was installed and it has very nice dual tailpipes.

Transmission:
We found a brand new Alfasud TI 5 speed on display at a German traffic school, bought it and installed it. Unfortunately it lasted only 20 kilometers and disintegrated after that. Luckily there was an Alfa specialist close by who had a good used TI 5 speed in stock and this one was installed. It shifts perfectly without any grinding or noises.

Interior:
We located a new, correct Series 2 dashboard and installed it. The seats were in tan Vinyl, which I really disliked. An Italian upholstery shop had some OEM Alfa Romeo cloth in orange and black, which was used in GTVs and Montreals. We had it shipped and the seats were re-upholstered in orange/black which really compliments the color "bruno cilento" perfectly.

The door panels were also covered in black Vinyl and orange cloth, but they were already warped when I got the car. I am enclosing a set of "better" door panels. The roof liner is original and in good shape. The car has the original rubber floor, which shows some wear especially on the passenger side. It also has a set of period correct Italian rubber floor mats.

After a six year restoration the car was shipped from Bremerhaven to Port Hueneme and imported with all the paperwork into the USA. Since it's a 1978 no EPA or DOT conversions were required. We displayed it at the Concorso Italiano in Monterey 2011 and a lot of people complimented the car. It is the only Alfasud Giardiniera in the USA and very few are left in the rest of the world. I am certain that this is one of the best ones in existence.

It has a 1978 Washington YOM (year of manufacture) plate which does not need renewal ever. Since it is over 25 years old, it's also smog exempt.

You don't see many Alfasuds around these days, even in Europe. Many examples fell victim to rust, leaving them in a state beyond repair. A quick scan of some classifieds in Europe reveal some clean, low mileage Alfasuds for sale between the $5,000 to $10,000 USD mark. A car like this is a hard one to value stateside, but there are certainly a few rabid Alfa fans out there who may drive up the bids.
